Observation of time-reversal symmetry breaking in the band structure of altermagnetic RuO 2

Altermagnets are an emerging elementary class of collinear magnets. Unlike ferromagnets, their distinct crystal symmetries inhibit magnetization while, unlike antiferromagnets, they promote strong spin polarization in the band structure. The corresponding unconventional mechanism of time-reversal symmetry breaking without magnetization in the electronic spectra has been regarded as a primary signature of altermagnetism but has not been experimentally visualized to date. We directly observe strong time-reversal symmetry breaking in the band structure of altermagnetic RuO 2 by detecting magnetic circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission spectra. Our experimental results, supported by ab initio calculations, establish the microscopic electronic structure basis for a family of interesting phenomena and functionalities in fields ranging from topological matter to spintronics, which are based on the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in altermagnets.

Experimental electronic structure of the electrically switchable antiferromagnet CuMnAs

Tetragonal CuMnAs is a room temperature antiferromagnet with an electrically reorientable Néel vector and a Dirac semimetal candidate. Direct measurements of the electronic structure of single-crystalline thin films of tetragonal CuMnAs using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) are reported, including Fermi surfaces (FS) and energy-wavevector dispersions. After correcting for a chemical potential shift of ≈ – 390 meV (hole doping), there is excellent agreement of FS, orbital character of bands, and Fermi velocities between the experiment and density functional theory calculations. In addition, 2×1 surface reconstructions are found in the low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and ARPES. This work underscores the need to control the chemical potential in tetragonal CuMnAs to enable the exploration and exploitation of the Dirac fermions with tunable masses, which are predicted to be above the chemical potential in the present samples.

Prediction of unconventional magnetism in doped FeSb 2

Significance For many decades, it has been commonly believed that all electronic states of a collinear antiferromagnet (AF) are spin-degenerate, unless the underlying crystal structure lacks centrosymmetry and has spin–orbit coupling. This has been essentially definitional for antiferromagnetism and is widely used experimentally to distinguish ferromagnets from AFs. Recently, it was demonstrated that a new class of magnets, possessing antiferromagnetic order and without net magnetization but showing a typical ferromagnetic response in many aspects, is possible. We predict that F e S b 2 , which is well known but poorly understood magnetically, is an incipient unconventional magnet of this type and can be pushed to become one by Co or Cr doping. Moreover, the calculated magnetic anisotropy is favorable for exhibiting various anomalous properties.
