Local lattice distortions and electronic phases in perovskite manganite Pr 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3

We use variable temperature and magnetic field total x-ray scattering to study the crystal structure of the strongly correlated Pr 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 perovskite, which is a paramagnetic insulator at room temperature, becomes a ferromagnetic metal at 272 K and, upon further decreasing the temperature, turns into an antiferromagnetic insulator at 105 K. We find that a model featuring a monoclinic symmetry captures the structure and its temperature and field evolution well, eliminating the need to evoke a phase segregation scenario as done in prior studies. It appears that coupled variations in Mn–oxygen bonding distances and angles from their values in an undistorted perovskite lattice, i.e., coupled local lattice distortions, assist the phase transitions in Pr 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 , contributing to its unique physical properties. Local structural distortions thus emerge as an important degree of freedom in strongly correlated systems, in particular perovskite manganates, and, therefore, they should be fully accounted for when their fascinating physics is considered.

LaCl 3 -based sodium halide solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity for all-solid-state batteries

To enable high performance of all solid-state batteries, a catholyte should demonstrate high ionic conductivity, good compressibility and oxidative stability. Here, a LaCl 3 -based Na + superionic conductor (Na 1–x Zr x La 1–x Cl 4 ) with high ionic conductivity of 2.9 × 10 –4 S cm –1 (30 °C), good compressibility and high oxidative potential (3.80 V vs. Na 2 Sn) is prepared via solid state reaction combining mechanochemical method. X-ray diffraction reveals a hexagonal structure (P6 3 /m) of Na 1–x Zr x La 1–x Cl 4 , with Na + ions forming a one-dimensional diffusion channel along the c-axis. First-principle calculations combining with X-ray absorption fine structure characterization etc. reveal that the ionic conductivity of Na 1–x Zr x La 1–x Cl 4 is mainly determined by the size of Na + -channels and the Na + /La 3+ mixing in the one-dimensional diffusion channels. When applied as a catholyte, the NaCrO 2 ||Na 0.7 Zr 0.3 La 0.7 Cl 4 ||Na 3 PS 4 ||Na 2 Sn all-solid-state batteries demonstrate an initial capacity of 114 mA h g –1 and 88% retention after 70 cycles at 0.3 C. In addition, a high capacity of 94 mA h g –1 can be maintained at 1 C current density.

Quantifying the cooperative evolution of microphase segregation and nanostructural order in annealed polyurethanes of MDI-BDO-PTHF

Here, we quantify the relationship between microphase segregation and local structure development in thermoplastic polyurethanes. Samples were prepared with varying ratios of 4,40 -methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) to polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) and annealed at temperatures T a between RT–140 °C for 20 h each. Distinct populations of smaller and larger ordered domains are distinguished by pair distribution func tion analysis. The intermediate-range order of nanoscale hard domains in the paracrystalline state (form I) is directly extracted and characterized. The results suggest that form I of the MDI-BDO:PTHF system presents a conformational and packing order similar to the form III structure, typically obtained from stretching/annealing, but with limited spatial coherence of 3–7 nm. Heating above T g of the hard segments is necessary to achieve a substantial structural response from the annealing treatment. Increasing T a promotes purification of the soft phase via microphase segregation, coalescence of the hard blocks, and growth of paracrystalline phase, while a minority fraction of longer-range ordered domains left over from production remains relatively constant. We observe a composition-dependent decrease in the average nearest-neighbor dis tance that can be correlated with the greater number of C C, C N, and C O bonds with increased hard segment content. A non-linear deviation in the trend is observed to correlate with sample densification. The mechanical and thermal behavior of the samples is intimately tied to the segregation state.
