Behavior of strain stripe networks in barium titanate nanocrystals on crossing its ferroelectric phase transition

Nanoscale strain networks are reported in BaTi O 3 (BTO) crystals of 300 nm size using Bragg coherent diffractive imaging. BTO nanocrystals with clear facets were chosen to identify the crystallographic directions, allowing the strain field direction and periodicity to be studied in detail. Stripes of strain were observed, which were both stable and preserved in tetragonal and cubic phases at elevated temperatures, above the tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition. A finite element analysis approach was used to simulate the domain structures inside a BTO crystal and to understand the origins of the strain stripes as piezoelectric blocks. A 180 ∘ domain model gives a better qualitative match to the experimental images. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Electronic structure and magnetic and transport properties of antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal GdAlSi

Here we report the topological electronic structure, magnetic, and magnetotransport properties of a noncentrosymmetric compound GdAlSi. Magnetic susceptibility shows an antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 32 K. In-plane isothermal magnetization exhibits an unusual hysteresis behavior at higher magnetic field, rather than near zero field. Moreover, the hysteresis behavior is asymmetric under positive and negative magnetic fields. First-principles calculations were performed on various magnetic configurations, revealing that the antiferromagnetic state is the ground state, and the spiral antiferromagnetic state is a close competing state. The calculations also reveal that GdAlSi hosts multiple Weyl points near the Fermi energy. The band structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) shows relatively good agreement with the theory, with the possibility of Weyl nodes slightly above the Fermi energy. Within the magnetic ordered state, we observe an exceptionally large anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of ~ 1310 Ω-1cm-1 at 2 K. Interestingly, the anomalous Hall effect persists up to room temperature with a significant value of AHC (~ 155 Ω-1cm-1). Our analysis indicates that the large AHC originates from the Berry curvature associated with the multiple pairs of Weyl points near Fermi energy.

Structural Explanation of the Dielectric Enhancement of Barium Titanate Nanoparticles Grown under Hydrothermal Conditions

Abstract When synthesized under certain conditions, barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO) nanoparticles are found to have the non‐thermodynamic cubic structure at room temperature. These particles also have a several‐fold enhanced dielectric constant, sometimes exceeding 6000, and are widely used in thin‐layer capacitors. A hydrothermal approach is used to synthesize BTO nanocrystals, which are characterized by a range of methods, including X‐ray Rietveld refinement and the Williamson–Hall approach, revealing the presence of significant inhomogeneous strain associated with the cubic phase. However, X‐ray pair distribution function measurements clearly show the local structure is lower symmetry than cubic. This apparent inconsistency is resolved by examining 3D Bragg coherent diffraction images of selected nanocrystals, which show the existence of ≈50 nm‐sized domains, which are interpreted as tetragonal twins, and yet cause the average crystalline structure to appear cubic. The ability of these twin boundaries to migrate under the influence of electric fields explains the dielectric anomaly for the nanocrystalline phase.

Fluctuating Ru trimer precursor to a two-stage electronic transition in RuP

Superconductivity in binary ruthenium pnictides occurs proximal to and upon suppression of a non-magnetic ground state, preceded by a pseudogap phase associated with Fermi surface instability, and its critical temperature, T c , is maximized around the pseudogap quantum critical point. By analogy with isoelectronic iron based counterparts, antiferromagnetic fluctuations became ''usual suspects" as putative mediators of superconducting pairing. Here we report on a high temperature local symmetry breaking in RuP, nonsuperconducting parent of the maximum- T c branch of these novel superconductors, revealed by combined nanostructure-sensitive powder and single crystal X-ray total scattering analyses. Large local distortions of Ru chains associated with orbital-charge trimerization, further assembled into hexamers, exist above the two-stage electronic transition in RuP. In the pseudogap regime the precursors order with distortions retaining their strength, whereas they acquire spin-singlet characteristics which dramatically enhances the distortion as the nonmagnetic ground state establishes. The precursors enable the nonmagnetic ground state and presumed complex oligomerization, and the relevance of pseudogap fluctuations for superconductivity emerges as a distinct prospect. As a transition metal system in which partial d-manifold filling combined with high crystal symmetry promotes electronic instabilities, this represents a further example of local electronic precursors underpinning the macroscopic collective behavior of quantum materials.

Hidden Local Symmetry Breaking in Silver Diamondoid Compounds is Root Cause of Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

Typically, conventional structure transitions occur from a low symmetry state to a higher symmetry state upon warming. In this work, an unexpected local symmetry breaking in the tetragonal diamondoid compound AgGaTe 2 is reported, which, upon warming, evolves continuously from an undistorted ground state to a locally distorted state while retaining average crystallographic symmetry. This is a rare phenomenon previously referred to as emphanisis. This distorted state, caused by the weak sd 3 orbital hybridization of tetrahedral Ag atoms, causes their displacement off the tetrahedron center and promotes a global distortion of the crystal structure resulting in strong acoustic–optical phonon scattering and an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.26 W m –1 K –1 at 850 K in AgGaTe 2 . Here, the findings explain the underlying reason for the unexpectedly low thermal conductivities of silver-based compounds compared to copper-based analogs and provide a guideline to suppressing heat transport in diamondoid and other materials.

Exemption of lattice collapse in Ni–MnO 2 birnessite regulated by the structural water mobility

Lattice collapse and associated mechanical fracture frequently occur in Li-intercalated metal oxide cathodes at the deep charge state upon Li-ion removal, governed by chemical compositions and the resulting electron density of the oxygen atoms. However, similar lattice collapse for metal oxide electrodes in aqueous storage and its mitigation have not been well studied. In this work, we reported the lattice collapse of MnO 2 layered birnessite during the aqueous de-sodiation process at high voltage due to the structural water motion, as evidenced by in situ XRD. Unlike non-aqueous Li-intercalated electrodes, Ni-dopants mitigated the lattice collapse of birnessite at deep charge states. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that Ni doping induces charge depletion of lattice oxygen due to its higher electronegativity than Mn. This charge reduction, in turn, yields a significant decrease in electrostatic repulsion between the oxygens belonging to lattice and structural water. Classical molecular dynamics simulations based on atomic charges obtained from DFT elucidate that Ni-doping facilitates immobilization of structural water in (Ni)MnO 2 and prevents lattice collapse upon Na-ion removal. (Ni)MnO 2 exempted from lattice collapse shows an improved storage capacity relative to MnO 2 while maintaining similar cycling stability.

Few‐Unit‐Cell MFI Zeolite Synthesized using a Simple Di‐quaternary Ammonium Structure‐Directing Agent

Abstract Synthesis of a pentasil‐type zeolite with ultra‐small few‐unit‐cell crystalline domains, which we call FDP (few‐unit‐cell crystalline domain pentasil), is reported. FDP is made using bis‐1,5(tributyl ammonium) pentamethylene cations as structure directing agent (SDA). This di‐quaternary ammonium SDA combines butyl ammonium, in place of the one commonly used for MFI synthesis, propyl ammonium, and a five‐carbon nitrogen‐connecting chain, in place of the six‐carbon connecting chain SDAs that are known to fit well within the MFI pores. X‐ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy imaging of FDP indicate ca. 10 nm crystalline domains organized in hierarchical micro‐/meso‐porous aggregates exhibiting mesoscopic order with an aggregate particle size up to ca. 5 μm. Al and Sn can be incorporated into the FDP zeolite framework to produce active and selective methanol‐to‐hydrocarbon and glucose isomerization catalysts, respectively.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

High-Capacity Aqueous Storage in Vanadate Cathodes Promoted by the Zn-Ion and Proton Intercalation and Conversion–Intercalation of Vanadyl Ions

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries in stationary storage. However, limited storage capacity and cyclic life impede their large-scale implementation. In this study, we report reversible electrochemical insertion of multi-ions into sodium vanadate (NaV 3 O 8 ) cathode materials for AZIBs, achieving a maximum storage capacity of 450 mAh g –1 at 0.05 A g –1 and a capacity retention of 82% after 500 cycles at 0.4 A g –1 . In addition to Zn 2+ and H + insertion, in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) collectively provide explicit evidence on vanadyl ions (VO 2+ ) conversion–intercalation at the NaV 3 O 8 cathode, showing the deintercalation of VO 2+ from NaV 3 O 8 and the consequent conversion of VO 2+ into V 2 O 5 on charging, and vice versa on discharging. Our study is the first to report on the cation conversion–intercalation mechanism in AZIBs. This reversible multi-ion storage mechanism provides a design principle for developing high-capacity aqueous electrode materials by engaging both the intercalation and conversion of charge carriers.

Dual Orbital Degeneracy Lifting in a Strongly Correlated Electron System

The local structure of NaTiSi 2 O 6 is examined across its Ti-dimerization orbital-assisted Peierls transition at 210 K. An atomic pair distribution function approach evidences local symmetry breaking preexisting far above the transition. The analysis unravels that, on warming, the dimers evolve into a short range orbital degeneracy lifted (ODL) state of dual orbital character, persisting up to at least 490 K. The ODL state is correlated over the length scale spanning ~ 6 sites of the Ti zigzag chains. Results imply that the ODL phenomenology extends to strongly correlated electron systems.

Characterizing Hidden Structures at NSLS-II: Strongly Correlated Electron Systems, Functional Ceramics, Batteries, and Beyond

Brookhaven National Laboratory (New York) launched its highenergy X-ray science program at the inception of the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility. Built in the 1980s, the NSLS X17 beamline was the world’s first super-conducting wiggler facility and remained in service for more than 30 years. The NSLS facility was decommissioned in October 2014 and a third-generation synchrotron machine, DOE’s National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), took over. Six years after completing construction, NSLS-II has a portfolio of 29 beamlines that includes two operating high-energy powder diffraction beamlines (XPD and PDF) and one high-energy imaging and diffraction beamline under construction (HEX).

Long-range and local crystal structures of the S r 1 - x C a x Ru O 3 perovskites

Here, the crystal structures of the Sr 1–x Ca x RuO 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) perovskites are investigated using both long-range and local structural probes. High-resolution synchrotron powder x-ray-diffraction characterization at ambient temperature shows that the materials have orthorhombic long-range crystal structures to high precision, and we support previous work showing that Ca 2+ substitution for Sr 2+ primarily changes the tilting of rigid corner-sharing RuO 6 octahedra at their shared oxygen vertices. X-ray pair-distribution function analysis for SrRuO 3 , CaRuO 3 , and one intermediate composition show them to display monoclinic symmetry at the local level; when averaged over different domain orientations this yields orthorhombic symmetry in the long range, and no long-range or local phase transitions are observed between 80 and 300 K for materials with intermediate compositions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the Sr/Ca distribution is random at the nanoscale. Lastly, we plot magnetic characteristics such as the ferromagnetic T c , Curie-Weiss theta, effective moment, and ambient temperature susceptibility vs the octahedral tilt and unit-cell volume.
