Describes the LAMP instrument and its performance obtained in field-testing.
A flight qualified laser radar called LAMP (LAser MaPper) is under development at JPL. LAMP is a guidance and control sensor that can form 3 dimensional images of its field of regard. This paper describes the detailed design of the LAMP sensor.
We describe a high-precision inter-spacecraft metrology system designed for NASA 's StarLight mission, a space-based separated-spacecraft stellar interferometer. It consists of dual-target linear metrology, based on a heterodyne interferometer with carrier phase modulation, and angular metrology designed to sense the pointing of the laser beam and provides bearing information. The dual-target operation enables one metrology beam to sense displacement of two targets independently. We present the current design, breadboard implementation of the Metrology Subsystem in a stellar interferometer testbed and the present state of development of flight qualifiable subsystem components.
We are developing a pointing sensor as part of the technology development effort for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission. The sensor will measure the angle between two beams, by measuring the phase difference in the heterodyne frequency on different sides of the pupil plane. In LISA, one beam would be from the local laser, while the other beam comes from a different spacecraft. The beam coming from the other space craft will have a Doppler shift due to changes in the orbits of the satellites. The phase difference across the aperture will be measured to align the incoming and outgoing beams.
Adaptive optics systems with Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors require reconstruction of the atmospheric phase error from slope measurements, with every sensor in the array being used in the computation of each actuator command. This fully populated reconstruction matrix can result in a significant computational burden for adaptive optics systems with large numbers of actuators. A method for generating sparse wavefront reconstruction matrices for adaptive optics is proposed. The method exploits the relevance of nearby slope measurements for control of an individual actuator, and relies upon the limited extent of the influence function for a zonal deformable mirror. Relying only on nearby sensor information can significantly reduce the calculation time for wavefront reconstruction. In addition, a hierarchic controller is proposed to recover some of the global wavefront information. The performance of these sparse wavefront reconstruction matrices was evaluated in simulation, and tested on the Palomar Adaptive Optics System. This paper will present some initial results from the simulations and experiments.
We describe a laboratory test of TDI with an unequal arm interferometer. The intent is to ascertain the performance limitations and proof-of-concept for 6 orders of magnitude frequency noise suppression.
