Syntheses of gold supported on metal oxides and their application in organic transformations

Herein, we report a general and straightforward synthesis method for gold supported on mesoporous and microporous metal oxides. Supported materials, in general, show higher crystallinity compare to unsupported systems as verified through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Also, through XRD, most of the metal is observed to be in its oxide form, whereas the gold support was found to be in its metallic state, which has been further confirmed from TEM. In terms of surface area, the catalyst was not found to follow any trend. Morphology wise, there are no changes observed after doping except in few cases. Combined results from XRD, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Auger, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggest that gold is mainly in the bulk and very little (0.04% in case of gold doped calcium oxide) or non (in case of gold doped mixed manganese-cerium oxide) on the surface. The presence of Au (0) 4f peaks in XPS further confirms the metallic state of the gold. Oxides of indium, magnesium and calcium have been studied for the organic transformation reactions. An enhancement in activity and product selectivity was observed in the case of the gold supported catalysts. Indium serves as a great catalyst for C–C coupling and electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions and gives >99% conversion. Interestingly, 88% selectivity for C–C coupling and >99% selectivity for aromatic substitution have been achieved at 100 °C and room temperature respectively. Magnesium and calcium give Knoevenagel condensation products. At room temperature with very low catalyst loading, >99% conversion and selectivity were observed for the Knoevenagel reaction with as high as 35.30 TOF. Finally, a mechanism for the C–C coupling reaction has been proposed based on these results.

Selective Oxidative Coupling of Amines Using Mesoporous MoO x Catalysts

In this paper, we report a synthesis method for highly porous molybdenum oxide via molybdenum-oxo cluster formation under acidic conditions providing extraordinary stability. Synthesized materials indicate higher valences of molybdenum as compared to the commercial standards as verified through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. The formation of a 91% orthorhombic molybdenum oxide bulk structure was verified through powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The effect of the hydrogen peroxide solvent system was optimized to obtain pore diameters as big as 17.4 nm and pore volumes as high as 0.168 cm 3 /g. These materials serve as great catalysts providing excellent yields of imine via amine coupling, having first-order kinetics with a turnover number as good as 27.93 with a slight decrease to 22.04 even after the fourth cycles. Surface hydroxyl species on the catalyst aid in the solid acid catalysis to jump-start the reaction.

Effects of Zr substitution on soot combustion over cubic fluorite-structured nanoceria: Soot-ceria contact and interfacial oxygen evolution

Ceria is widely used as a catalyst for soot combustion, but effects of Zr substitution on the reaction mechanism is ambiguous. The present work elucidates effects of Zr substitution on soot combustion over cubic fluorite-structured nanoceria. The nanostructured CeO 2 , Ce 0.92 Zr 0.08 O 2 , and Ce0.84Zr0.16O2 composed of 5–6 nm crystallites display Tm-CO 2 (the temperature at maximum CO 2 yield) at 383, 355, and 375°C under 10 vol.% O 2 /N 2 , respectively. Additionally, the size of agglomerate decreases from 165.5 to 51.9–57.3 nm, which is beneficial for the soot-ceria contact. Moreover, Zr increases the amount of surface oxygen vacancies, generating more active oxygen (O2- and O-) for soot oxidation. Thus, the activities of Ce 0.92 Zr 0.08 O 2 and Ce 0.84 Zr 0.16 O 2 in soot combustion are better than that of CeO2. Although oxygen vacancies promote the migration of lattice O 2- , the enriched surface Zr also inhibits the mobility of lattice O 2- . Therefore, the Tm-CO 2 of Ce 0.84 Zr 0.16 O 2 is higher than that of Ce 0.92 Zr 0.08 O 2 . Based on reaction kinetic study, soot in direct contact with ceria preferentially decomposes with low activation energy, while the oxidation of isolated soot occurs through diffusion with high activation energy. The obtained findings provide new understanding on the soot combustion over nanoceria.

Metabolites of Tobacco- and E-Cigarette-Related Nitrosamines Can Drive Cu 2+ -Mediated DNA Oxidation

Nitrosamine metabolites resulting from cigarette smoking and E-cigarette (E-cig) vaping cause DNA damage that can lead to genotoxicity. While DNA adducts of metabolites of nitrosamines 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) are well-known tobacco-related cancer biomarkers, only a few studies implicate NNN and NNK in DNA oxidation in humans. NNK and NNN were found in the urine of E-cigarette users who never smoked cigarettes. This paper proposes the first chemical pathways of DNA oxidation driven by NNK and NNN metabolites in redox reactions with Cu 2+ and NADPH leading to reactive oxygen species (ROS). A microfluidic array with thin films of DNA and metabolic enzymes that make metabolites of NNN and NNK in the presence of Cu 2+ and NADPH was used to estimate relative rates of DNA oxidation. Detection by electrochemiluminescence (ECL) employed a new ECL dye [Os(tpy-benz-COOH) 2 ] 2+ that is selective for and sensitive to the primary DNA oxidation product 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) in DNA. Enzyme–DNA films on magnetic beads were used to produce nitrosamine metabolites that enter ROS-forming redox cycles with Cu 2+ and NADPH, and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to quantify 8-oxodG and identify metabolites. ROS were detected by optical sensors. Metabolites of NNK and NNN + Cu 2+ + NADPH generated relatively high rates of DNA oxidation. Lung is the exposure route in smoking and vaping, human lung tissue contains Cu 2+ and NADPH, and lung microsomal enzymes gave the highest rates of DNA oxidation in this study. Furthermore, E-cigarette vapor contains 6-fold more copper than that in cigarette smoke, which could exacerbate DNA oxidation.

Enhanced visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate activation on cobalt-doped mesoporous iron oxide for orange II degradation

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) attracted a lot of attention due to their capability and adaptability in wastewater treatment. Although heterogeneous cobalt-based catalysts have been extensively studied and have emerged superior for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, leaching of cobalt is still a major concern. Herein, we report a photo-assisted PMS activation approach using cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide with exceptional activity and stability up to 7 cycles with very low cobalt leaching (0.5 ppm). The highest activity was obtained by 1 mol % cobalt doped mesoporous iron oxide. Orange II dye was completely degraded by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated under visible light irradiation within 1 min. ROS were evaluated using two distinct techniques (Fluorescence probes and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). ROS quenching experiments were also used to highlight the dominant pathway. This study correlates the structural and electronic changes induced with cobalt doping to the exceptional activity.
