A robust model predictive control algorithm for uncertain nonlinear systems that guarantees resolvability

A robustly stabilizing MPC (model predictive control) algorithm for uncertain nonlinear systems is developed that guarantees resolvability. With resolvability, initial feasibility of the finite-horizon optimal control problem implies future feasibility in a receding-horizon framework. The control consists of two components; (i) feed-forward, and (ii) feedback part. Feed-forward control is obtained by online solution of a finite-horizon optimal control problem for the nominal system dynamics. The feedback control policy is designed off-line based on a bound on the uncertainty in the system model. The entire controller is shown to be robustly stabilizing with a region of attraction composed of initial states for which the finite-horizon optimal control problem is feasible. The controller design for this algorithm is demonstrated on a class of systems with uncertain nonlinear terms that have norm-bounded derivatives and derivatives in polytopes. An illustrative numerical example is also provided.

A formulation of stability for spacecraft formations

A formulation of stability for a set of spacecraft in formation flight is presented. First, a formation is defined in a precise mathematical form in terms of control interactions. Then, stability is formulated based on input-to-output stability with respect to a partitioning of the formation dynamics. This formulation of stability is shown to be useful in characterizing disturbance propagation in the formation as a function of the partition interconnection topology, and also in analyzing the robustness of sensing, communication, and control topologies. Stability results are presented for hierarchical, cyclic, and disturbance attenuating formations.

Observers for Systems with Nonlinearities Satisfying an Incremental Quadratic Inequality

We consider the problem of state estimation for nonlinear time-varying systems whose nonlinearities satisfy an incremental quadratic inequality. These observer results unifies earlier results in the literature; and extend it to some additional classes of nonlinearities. Observers are presented which guarantee that the state estimation error exponentially converges to zero. Observer design involves solving linear matrix inequalities for the observer gain matrices. Results are illustrated by application to a simple model of an underwater.

L2 Earth Atmosphere Observatory: Formation Guidance, Metrology and Control Synthesis

The Earth Observatory Formation at L2, a Lagrange libration point, is a unique large aperture (25 m diameter) space telescope concept that will improve the knowledge and understanding of dynamic, chemical and radiative mechanisms that cause changes in the atmosphere, and can lead to the development of models and techniques to predict short and long-term climate changes. The results of this concept definition study show that the telescope concept is feasible, and can have technology readiness in the 2020 time frame. Further advanced development in several subsystems is needed, such as higher efficiency Xenon ion thrusters with throttling, and optical quality large membrane mirror with active shape control. It presents an analysis and solution of guidance, sensing, control, and propulsion problems for a formation of two spacecraft on the Sun-Earth line in the neighborhood of the Sun-Earth L2 point, that observes Earth s atmosphere during continuous solar occultation by the Earth. A system architecture is described for the observatory, and its components that include unique mission specific metrology. The formation must follow a powered trajectory with strictly limited fuel use to observe solar occultation. A configuration of ion thrusters and reaction wheels for translation and attitude control is designed along with algorithms for orbit following and formation control. Simulation results of the orbital and formation dynamics are presented that verify performance of the control systems.

System design, modelling, and tracking filter for bearings only analog camera

In this paper, each subsystem of the Celestial Sensor is discussed with emphasis given to the filtering algorithms. The celestial sensor software processes sequential frame based bearing measurements on a peripheral CPY specifically designed for this application. A frame preprocessor is used to normalize each bearing measurement and apply a number of accept/reject rules. The accepted set of measurements is then passed to an Extended Kalman Filter (EKP) that is tuned to track the motion of the robot within the room.
