Disorder-induced proximate quantum spin ice phase in Pr2Sn2O7

We report a comprehensive bulk characterization and neutron scattering investigation of single-crystalline Pr2Sn2O7, a magnetic pyrochlore synthesized via a flux-growth method. Unpolarized neutron diffuse scattering reveals the emergence of spin-ice correlations below T ∼ 1 K, evidenced by the development of anisotropic pinch-point features that are consistent with quantum-spin-ice (QSI) behavior. A.C. susceptibility measurements indicate a progressive slowing of spin dynamics in this regime, culminating in complete spin freezing below Tf ≈ 0.15 K. Inelastic neutron scattering at T = 0.5 K reveals a broad spectrum of quasi-elastic magnetic excitations, with intensity in the low-energy range [0, 0.2] meV significantly suppressed below Tf. Meanwhile, an incipient (100)-type magnetic order begins to nucleate, and a gapped excitation centered at ℏω = 0.23 meV persists. We further identify two distinct dynamical timescales above Tf , a slow component τ_slow ∼ 10^−5 s and a fast component τ_fast ∼ 10^−10 s, in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions for QSI systems. Taken together, these results indicate that Pr2Sn2O7 enters a disorder-induced spin-frozen phase below Tf , lying in close proximity to a U(1) quantum spin liquid

Competing pair density wave and uniform 𝑑-wave superconductivity in phase-separated 214 cuprates at the 1/8 anomaly

Compelling evidence exists for electronic phase separation in cuprate high-𝑇𝑐 superconductors, emerging near 1/8 hole doping. At these dopings and low temperatures, intertwined charge and spin stripes coexist with more uniformly doped regions in the two-dimensional (2D) copper-oxide planes. Each region is capable of developing superconducting pairing, either as a pair density wave (PDW) within the stripes or as a uniform 𝑑-wave condensate (𝑑-SC) in the more homogeneous regions. Using neutron scattering on single crystals of La1.875−𝑦⁢Nd𝑦⁢Sr0.125⁢CuO4, we demonstrate that the onset temperatures for spin stripe order (𝑇𝑁) and superconductivity (𝑇𝑐) merge as the average ordered moment vanishes in LSCO (𝑦=0), whereas Nd doping stabilizes static stripe order and suppresses 𝑇𝑐. Because the spin stripes possess the same in-plane periodicity (8⁢𝑎) as the PDW and establish the framework within which the PDW resides, the stabilization of spin stripe order enhances PDW correlations. Thus, the competition between 𝑑-wave pairing in the uniform regions and PDW pairing in the stripe-ordered regions can be controlled by the Nd concentration in La1.875−𝑦⁢Nd𝑦⁢Sr0.125⁢CuO4, allowing the superconducting 𝑇𝑐 to vary by nearly an order of magnitude at a fixed 1/8-hole doping.

Charge density fluctuations with enhanced superconductivity at the proposed quantum critical point of Sr0.77⁢Ba0.23⁢Ni2⁢As2

A quantum critical point (QCP) represents a continuous phase transition at absolute zero. In unconventional superconductors, enhanced superconducting transition temperature and magnetic fluctuation strength are often observed together, indicating magnetism-mediated superconductivity. This raises the question of whether quantum fluctuations in other degrees of freedom, such as charge, could similarly boost superconductivity. However, because charge is frequently intertwined with magnetism, isolating and understanding its specific role in Cooper pair formation pose a significant challenge. Here, we report persistent charge density fluctuations (CDFs) down to 15 K in the nonmagnetic superconductor Sr0.77⁢Ba0.23⁢Ni2⁢As2, which lie near a proposed nematic QCP associated with a sixfold enhancement of superconductivity. Our results show that the quasielastic CDFs do not condense into resolution-limited Bragg peaks but, rather, display nonsaturated strength. The phonons associated with CDFs completely soften at 25 K, with their critical behavior described by the same mathematical framework as the antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model, yielding a fitted Curie-Weiss temperature of 𝜃≈0K. Additionally, we find that the nematic fluctuations are weakly coupled to the lattice, as evidenced by the absence of softening in nematic-coupled in-plane transverse acoustic phonons. Our discovery positions Sr𝑥⁢Ba1−𝑥⁢Ni2⁢As2 as a promising candidate for charge-fluctuation-driven superconductivity.
