The helium-to-hydrogen ratio of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 of Messier 13

Barnard 29 is the most luminous UV-bright star of the globular cluster Messier 13. Comparison of its reddening corrected optical region spectrophotometry and IUE low dispersion fluxes and its H-gamma profile with the predictions of metal-poor model atmospheres having the metallicity of M 13 indicated T(sub eff) = 20250 K, log g = 3.15. Observations of He I lambda(4026) taken with echelle spectrograph of the Multi-Mirror telescope using a Reticon detector show that He/H = 0.055 +/- 0.020. Some astrophysical implications of this result are discussed.

A line identification study of the IUE SWP high dispersion spectrum of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 of Messier 13

A line identification study was performed of the coaddition of three SWP high dispersion IUE exposures of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 of Messier 13. One of these images took two IUE shifts. The previous study by de Boer and Savage (1983) was extended and stellar lines of C I, C II, C III, C IV, N I, N III, O I, O III, O IV,Al III, Si II, Si III, Si IV, P III, S II, and S III and interstellar lines of C I, C II, C IV, N I, N III, N IV, N V, O I, Al II, Al III, Si II, Si IV, S II, and Fe II were found. These lines are the strongest expected lines in a hot Population II star. Apparent intensity minima corresponding to interstellar features are noted, especially those matching a high velocity cloud found by de Boer and Savage.

A catalog of stellar spectrophotometry

A machine-readable catalog of stellar spectrophotometric measurements made with rotating grating scanner is introduced. Consideration is given to the processes by which the stellar data were collected and calibrated with the fluxes of Vega (Hayes and Latham, 1975). A sample page from the spectrophotometric catalog is presented.

Optical region elemental abundance analyses of B and A stars. VII - The metallic-lined star 32 Aquarii

An abundance analysis using photographic region spectrograms and fully line-blanketed model atmospheres has been performed for the metallic-lined (Am) star 32 Aquarii consistent with previous papers of this series. Its pattern of abundance anomalies is not identical with those of the hot Am stars although there are definite similarities. Changes of up to order 1 dex are foundly by comparison with the previous analysis by Smith. Slightly better agreement is found with the recent analyses of singly-ionized rare earth lines by Magazzu and Cowley. Results are also presented for a model selected on the basis of photometric indices according to the formula of Moon and Dworetsky.

Optical region elemental abundance analyses of B and A stars. VI - The normal stars HR 6559 (A7 IV) and Eta Leporis (F0 IV)

Abundance analyses using optical region data and fully line-blanketed model atmospheres have been performed for the sharp-lined superficially normal stars HR 6559 (A7 IV) and Eta Leporis (F0 IV), consistent with previous studies of middle B through early A type stars. HR 6559 and Eta Lep are slightly metal-weak in general. Their analyses and that of Theta Leo (A2 V) support the suggestion of Smith (1974) that sharp-lined normal A stars do not necessarily have photospheric abundances identical with those of normal middle to late B stars.

CNO abundances of some field horizontal-branch and Population I A stars

From observations of infrared lines, oxygen and nitrogen abundances of the prototype field horizontal-branch stars HD 109995 and HD 161817, the somewhat similar star HD 64488, and the sharp-lined Population I A stars Theta Leo and HR 6559 have been obtained, as well as carbon abundances of HD 161817 and Theta Leo. The results for HD 161817 may be in accord with the predictions of Sweigart and Mengel (1979) for dredge-up during the previous red-giant stage if the non-LTE effects for the O I lines have been properly accounted for, and those for the C I and N I lines are small. This star and HD 109995 are apparently both oxygen and nitrogen poor to the same degree although their iron abundances differ by 0.3 dex.

The ultraviolet IUE spectrum of the population II horizontal-branch A star HD 109995

Eight SWP and six LWP high dispersion IUE images of the field horizontal-branch A star HD 109995 have been averaged to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The line density in the UV is greater than that of the optical region, but less than that of comparable population I A stars. Many of the identified lines are those of Fe II. Lines of C I, C II, N I, O I, Mg I, Mg II, Al II, Al III, Si I, Si II, P II, S I, Cl I, Ti II, V II, Cr II, Mn II, Fe I, Co II, Ni II, Zn II, and Ge II are also present. Definite interstellar lines of C II, Mg I, Mg II, Al II, Si II, and Fe II were found.

Optical region elemental abundance analyses of B and A stars. V - The normal stars Theta Leonis, Tau Herculis, 14 Cygni, and 5 Aquarii

Abundance analyses using optical region data and fully line-blanketed model atmospheres have been performed for four sharp-lined normal B and A type stars. The microturbulent velocities of all the stars are found to follow the same relation with temperature. Some of the stars studied in this paper are found to have one or two anomalous abundances, such as the zirconium abundance of Theta Leo.

Spectrophotometry of peculiar B and A stars. XVIII - The helium rich variable stars HR 1890, Sigma Orionis E, and HD 37776

Optical region spectrophotometry at 3300-7850 A has been obtained for three helium rich stars, HR 1890, Sigma Ori E, and HD 37776, of the Orion OB1 Association. New uvby-beta photometry of HR 1890 and HD 37776 as well as published data are also used to investigate the variability of these stars. A new period of 1.53862 days was determined for HD 37776. For all three stars H-beta varies in antiphase with strong He I lines. The spectrophotometric bandpass containing the strong He I line at 4471 A varies in phase with the R index of Pedersen and Thomsen (1977). Evidence is found for weak absorption features which appear to be an extension of the 5200 A feature seen in cooler CP stars.

Optical region elemental abundance analyses of B and A stars. IV - Re-evaluation with new critically compiled Fe II oscillator strengths and improved estimates of the damping constants

A new critical compilation of Fe II f-values has recently been completed by Martin et al. To see how these values affect the derived stellar abundances both directly in changing the values of log Fe/H for individual lines and through the determination of the microturbulent velocities, the data for 11 (six normal and five slightly peculiar) sharp-lined B and A stars have been reanalyzed. At the same time, the choice of line damping constants has been investigated, especially for Fe I and Fe II lines.

On the ultraviolet energy distributions and the temperatures of peculiar B and A stars

Color temperatures have been estimated by comparing ultraviolet observations of HgMn and magnetic Ap stars with those of normal stars. Ultraviolet data from the OAO-2, ANS, TD-1, and IUE satellites generally give similar results. The values for the normal stars were derived from comparison of fluxes predicted by solar-composition fully line-blanketed model atmospheres with optical region spectrophotometry. The ultraviolet temperatures of the HgMn stars cover a narrower temperature range than do their optical region values. Magnetic Ap stars with similar optical region temperatures can show substantial differences in their ultraviolet color temperatures. This may result from magnetic field configuration and abundance differences.

The peculiar A star HD 43819 - A photographic region line-identification study

A line identification study of the sharp-lined silicon star HD 43819 has been performed for the photographic region 3759-4924 A. Comparison of this star's spectrum with those of other silicon stars shows that it shares many of their apparent abundance anomalies. The TiII, CrII, FeI, and FeII spectra are well represented while the singly ionized rare earths are represented by at best a few lines per species.

The field horizontal-branch star HD 109995: New results with coadded ultraviolet and optical region spectra

A comprehensive ultraviolet and optical region abundance analysis of the field horizontal branch Population 2 A-type star HD 109995 is described. Coaddition of IUE high dispersion images and DAO 6.5 A/mm IIaO spectrograms improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the data. We have identified ultraviolet lines whose analysis will provide more complete and accurate elemental abundances than those obtained from optical region spectra alone. A preliminary elemental abundance analysis of the optical region shows that log Z/Z (solar) approx. = -2. A first attempt to synthesize two Fe 2 ultraviolet resonance lines yields an iron abundance a few tenths of a deg higher than the average obtained from optical region Fe 2 lines.

On the need for spectroscopic data in ultraviolet stellar spectral synthesis calculations

A general discussion of the quality of spectroscopic data for ultraviolet (less than 3000 A) spectral synthesis calculations is presented. It is pointed out that progress in the generation of complete and accurate lists of atomic lines, and in the computation and measurement of accurate transition probabilities of the spectra of many elements is lagging behind current and near-term observational capabilities. Theoretical syntheses of the line profiles in the spectra of three middle-to-late B type stars (Pi Cet, 134 Tau, and vCap) are computed. The computations are found to be complicated and ambiguous due to the low accuracy of the oscillator strengths used in the analysis. Some characteristics of star-to-star variations in elemental abundances are discussed.
