Elemental abundance analyses with coadded DAO spectrograms. VI - The mercury-manganese stars Nu Cancri, Iota Coronae Borealis and HR 8349

The elemental abundances of three mercury-manganese stars, Nu Cancri, Iota Coronae Borealis, and HR 8349, were found to be consistent with previous analyses of this series. As Iota CrB is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a small velocity amplitude for most of its period, its study required determining whether the observed lines were produced in the primary or secondary or both. The derived abundances and effective termperatures were used along with those of mercury-manganese stars previously analyzed in order to extend the study of probable correlations between abundances, with the effective temperature and surface gravity in accordance with radiative diffusion explanations.

A comparison of some spectrograms obtained with a Reticon and by coaddition of photographic plates

High-dispersion 2.4 A/mm spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of order 80 were obtained for three stars by using a Reticon detector and by coadding photographic spectrograms at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Metal lines of equivalent widths 5 to 75 mA in Alpha Dra and Iota CrB show systematic differences of order 4 percent with an uncertainty of order 3 percent and an rms scatter of 2.0 to 3.7 mA about the mean equivalent-width differences.

Elemental abundance analyses with coadded DAO spectrograms. IV - Revision of previous analyses. V - The mercury-manganese stars Phi Herculis, 28 Herculis and HR 7664

Changes in chromium, manganese, and nickel abundances derived from singly ionized lines are incorporated into the elemental abundance of Adelman and Hill (1987) in order to provide more accurate gf values and damping constants for several atomic species. An improved agreement with the values from neutral lines of the same element is found. In the second part, the method is applied to an elemental abundance analysis of three mercury-manganese stars, and correlations are found between the derived abundances and the effective temperature.

Elemental abundance analyses with coadded Dominion Astrophysical Observatory spectrograms. II - The mercury-manganese stars 53 Tauri, Mu Leporis and Kappa Cancri

Elemental abundance analyses based on the coaddition of at least 10 2.4 A/mm Ila-O Dominion Astrophysical Observatory spectrograms have been performed for three mercury-manganese stars, 53 Tauri, Mu Leporis, and Kappa Cancri. These fine analyses show a greater degree of internal consistency than previous studies based on lower signal-to-noise data. Lines as weak as of order 3 mA are employed in these studies, and lines of atomic species not previously identified have been discovered. The status of 53 Tau as an anomalous member of this class is confirmed in that it lacks a Hg II 3984 A line even at the 2 mA level. Further, its surface gravity indicates it is less evolved than Mu Lep and Chi Cnc. Violations of the odd-even effect in the photospheric abundances of all three stars suggest that nonnuclear processes have operated in their atmospheres. Some of the values are substantially changed from their presumably initial solar values.

Elemental abundance analyses with coadded DAO spectrograms. I - The field horizontal-branch stars HD-64488, 109995 and 161817

It is possible to improve the quality of elemental-abundance analyses by using higher-S/N data than has been the practice at high resolution. The procedures developed at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory to coadd high-dispersion coude spectrograms are used with a minimum of 10 6.5-A/mm IIa-O spectrograms of each of three field hoorizontal-branch (FHB) A stars to increase the S/N of the photographic data over a considerable wavelength region. Fine analyses of the sharp-lined prototype FHB stars HD 109995 and 161817 show an internal consistency which justifies this effort. Their photospheric elemental abundances are similar to those of Population II globular cluster giants. As their photometric and spectrophotometric properties are similar to blue HB stars in such clusters, they are confirmed to be the brighter analogs of such stars. HD 64488, which is photometrically and spectrophotometrically similar to the FHB stars, is found to be metal-poor (Fe/H = -1) with much broader lines (v sin i = 147 km/s). The implications of the abundance anomalies of all three stars are discussed.

The effective temperature and surface gravity of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 of Messier 13

Comparison of optical region spectrophotometry, IUE low dispersion fluxes, and the H-gamma profile with the predictions of metal-poor model atmospheres were used to derive the photospheric parameters of the UV-bright star Barnard 29. These were found to be T(eff) - 20, 250 K, log g - 3.15 after the application of reddening corrections. A solar He/H ratio and the metallicity of Messier 13 were assumed.

The ultraviolet lines of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in the IUE spectrum of the field horizontal-branch A star HD 109995

Photospheric abundances of C, N and O of an evolved halo Population 2 star, the field horizontal-branch star HD 109995, based on observations of ultraviolet resonance or low excitation lines are presented. The logarithmic abundance ratio with respect to the Sun O/Fe = +1.5 is substantially higher than previously determined values for Pop. 2 red giants or RR Lyrae stars, but agrees well with a derived value from the OI infrared triplet. This may be direct evidence of Tinsley's (1979) scenario of localized sharply rising interstellar oxygen abundances immediately following bursts of massive star formation. Star HD 109995 may have formed from such highly oxygen-enriched material prior to its dilution by gas with the pre-burst composition. The ratio C/N = -1.3 may reflect the composition of material from which the star formed or CN processing within the star during its evolution.

Investigations of CP and normal stars with coadded Dominion Astrophysical Observatory spectrograms

The procedures developed at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory to coadd high dispersion coude spectrograms are described, and an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio in photographic data is shown. These techniques can yield low noise spectra over a considerable wavelength range. Preliminary results of the analyses of such coadditions are shown to demonstrate the power of these procedures.

Cool magnetic CP stars

The paper reviews progress in research on the cool magnetic CP stars especially during the past four years. Studies of energy distributions and abundances are analyzed to reveal their systematics. Model atmospheres do not yet accurately describe the average energy distributions much less the variability with the rotational periods of these stars.
