Metal-ligand interactions in a redox active ligand system. Electrochemistry and spectroscopy of [M(dipyvd) 2 ] n+ (M=Zn, Ni, n =0, 1, 2)

Reaction of nickel and zinc triflates with the tridentate leucoverdazyl 1-isopropyl-3,5-di (2'-pyridyl)-6-oxo-2H-tetrazine (dipyvdH) and triethylamine resulted in the neutral coordination compounds M(dipyvd) 2 (M = Ni,Zn). In acetonitrile, both compounds undergo two one electron oxidation processes, Zn (dipyvd) 2 at -0.28 V and -0.12 V and Ni(dipyvd) 2 at -0.32 V and -0.15 V vs ferrocene/ferricenium. Oxidations are ligand based resulting in an intermediate mixed valence species and a cationic bis(verdazyl) compound respectively. Oxidation of the ligand changes a localized, antiaromatic, non-planar 8π electron anion to a planar, delocalized 7π electron radical. The change in ligand structure results in an increase in the octahedral ligand field splitting from 10,500 cm –1 to ~13,000 cm –1 , suggesting an increase in the pi acceptor character of the ligand. In the mixed valence species, spectroscopic data suggests minimal interaction between ligands mediated by the metal center; i.e., these are class I-II systems in the Robin-Day classification.

Nonlocal features of the spin-orbit exciton in Kitaev materials

A comparative resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of three well-known Kitaev materials is presented: 𝛼−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 , Na 2 ⁢IrO 3 , and 𝛼−RuCl 3 . Despite similar low-energy physics, these materials show distinct electronic properties, such as the large difference in the size of the charge gap. The RIXS spectra of the spin-orbit exciton for these materials show remarkably similar three-peak features, including sharp low energy peak (peak A) as well as transitions between 𝑗 eff = 1/2 and 𝑗 eff = 3/2 states. Comparison of experimental spectra with cluster calculations reveals that the observed three-peak structure reflects the significant role that nonlocal physics plays in the electronic structure of these materials. Here, in particular, the low-energy peak A arises from a holon-doublon pair rather than a conventional particle-hole exciton as proposed earlier. Our study suggests that while spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator is still the best description for these materials, electron itinerancy cannot be ignored when formulating low-energy Hamiltonian of these materials.

Universal Stripe Symmetry of Short-Range Charge Density Waves in Cuprate Superconductors

The omnipresence of charge density waves (CDWs) across almost all cuprate families underpins a common organizing principle. However, a longstanding debate of whether its spatial symmetry is stripe or checkerboard remains unresolved. While CDWs in lanthanum- and yttrium-based cuprates possess a stripe symmetry, distinguishing these two scenarios is challenging for the short-range CDW in bismuth-based cuprates. Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is employed to uncover the spatial symmetry of the CDW in Bi 2 Sr 2-x La x CuO 6 + δ . Across a wide range of doping and temperature, anisotropic CDW peaks with elliptical shapes are found in reciprocal space. Based on Fourier transform analysis of real-space models, the results are interpreted as evidence of unidirectional charge stripes, hosted by mutually 90°-rotated anisotropic domains. This work paves the way for a unified symmetry and microscopic description of CDW order in cuprates.

Low-energy quasi-circular electron correlations with charge order wavelength in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Most resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates have focused on the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, scattering along other in-plane directions should not be ignored as it may help understand, for example, the origin of charge order correlations or the isotropic scattering resulting in strange metal behavior. Our RIXS experiments reveal dynamic charge correlations over the qx-qy scattering plane in underdoped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . Tracking the softening of the RIXS-measured bond-stretching phonon, we show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately 70 meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the q x -q y scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, q CO . This phonon-tracking procedure also allows us to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e., centered around [q x = ±q CO , q y = 0] and [q x = 0, q y = ±q CO ]) as the origin of the observed correlations.

A broken translational symmetry state in an infinite-layer nickelate

A defining signature of strongly correlated electronic systems is a rich phase diagram, which consists of multiple broken symmetries, such as magnetism, superconductivity, and charge order. In the recently discovered nickelate superconductors a large antiferromagnetic exchange energy has been reported, which implies the existence of strong electronic correlations. However, signatures of a broken-symmetry state other than superconductivity have not yet been observed. Here, we observe charge ordering in infinite-layer nickelates La 1-x Sr x NiO 2 using resonant x-ray scattering. The parent compound orders along the Ni-O bond direction with an incommensurate wave vector, distinct from the stripe order observed in other nickelates that propagates along a direction 45º to the Ni-O bond. The resonance profile we measure indicates that ordering originates from the nickelate layers and induces a parasitic charge modulation of lanthanum electrons. After doping, the charge order diminishes and its wave vector shifts toward commensurate, indicating that strong electronic correlations are likely to be responsible for the ordered state. Our results suggest that the existence of charge order and its potential interplay with antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity are important themes in nickel-based superconductors.

Evolution of the electronic structure in Ta 2 NiSe 5 across the structural transition revealed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We utilized high-energy-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at both the Ta and Ni L 3 -edges to map out element-specific particle-hole excitations in Ta 2 NiSe 5 across the phase transition. Our results reveal a momentum dependent gap-like feature in the low energy spectrum, which agrees well with the band gap in element-specific joint density of states calculations based on ab initio estimates of the electronic structure in both the low temperature monoclinic and the high temperature orthorhombic structure. Below T c , the RIXS energy-momentum map shows a minimal gap at the Brillouin zone center (~0.16 eV), conforming that Ta 2 NiSe 5 possesses a direct band gap in its low temperature ground state. However, inside the gap, no signature of anticipated collective modes with an energy scale comparable to the gap size can be identified. Upon increasing the temperature to above T c , whereas the gap at the zone center closes, the RIXS map at finite momenta still possesses the gross features of the low temperature map, suggesting a substantial mixing between the Ta and Ni orbits in the conduction and valence bands, which does not change substantially across the phase transition. Our experimental observations and comparison to the theoretical calculations lend further support that the phase transition and the corresponding gap opening in Ta 2 NiSe 5 is largely structural by nature with possible minor contribution from the putative exciton condensate.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.
