Video compression using conditional replenishment and motion prediction

A study of a low-rate monochrome video compression system is presentd in this paper. This system is a conditional-replenishment coder that uses two-dimensional Walsh-transform coding within each video frame. The conditional-replenishment algorithm works by transmitting only the portions of an image that are changing in time. This system is augmented with a motn-prediction algorithm that measures spatial dispalcement parameters from frame to frame, and codes the data using these parameters. A comparison is made between the conditional-replenishment system with, and without, the motion-predictinalgorthm. Subsampling in time is ued to maintain the data rate rate at a fixed value. Average bit rates of 1 bit/picture element (pel) to 1/16 bit/pel are considered. The resultant performance of the compression simulations is presented in terms of the average frame rates produced.

Secondary mirror subassembly in the 2.4 m NASA optical telescope

The secondary mirror is a circular disc provided with a shoulder. Three clamps located 120 deg apart support the mirror shoulder. On one side of the mirror shoulder, a coated graphite-epoxy ring connects the three clamps. Three axial flexures with a low radial compliance extend out from a support platform constructed of coated graphite-epoxy box structs and invar corners, and provide a nominal in-plane zero coefficient of thermal expansion. In each invar corner piece, a ball joint provides a connection to a expansion. In each invar corner piece, a ball joint provides a connection to a six-degree-of-freedom adjustment system that can move the secondary mirror with a high degree of precision in defocus, decenter, and tilt. Thermal controls that maintain structural-element temperature variations within specified limits insure that the assembly exceeds stability and figure control requirements on the secondary mirror.

Performance evaluation for transform coding using a nonseparable covariance model

Intraframe transform coding of pictures for the case of a nonseparable covariance model is considered. Performances of the Walsh-Hadamard, discrete-cosine, and Karhunen-Loeve transforms are compared based on the compaction of signal energy in the transform components and the degree of decorrelation of the data. The results demonstrate that the performances of the discrete-cosine and Karhunen-Loeve transforms compare closely, as is the case with a separable covariance model. The corresponding performance of the Walsh-Hadamard transform is inferior.

Some aspects of adaptive transform coding of multispectral data

This paper concerns a data compression study pertaining to multi-spectral scanner (MSS) data. The motivation for this undertaking is the need for securing data compression of images obtained in connection with the Landsat Follow-On Mission, where a compression of at least 6:1 is required. The MSS data used in this study consisted of four scenes: Tristate, consisting of 256 pels per row and a total of 512 rows - i.e., (256x512), (2) Sacramento (256x512), (3) Portland (256x512), and (4) Bald Knob (200x256). All these scenes were on digital tape at 6 bits/pel. The corresponding reconstructed scenes of 1 bit/pel (i.e., a 6:1 compression) are included.

Interframe transform coding of picture data

This semi-tutorial paper describes the process of using orthogonal transforms for the purposes of encoding TV picture data. Results pertaining to a 6:1 data compression experiment using the Walsh-Hadamard transform are included.
