Observation of a $ {\varLambda}_b^0 $ - $ {\overline{\varLambda}}_b^0 $ production asymmetry in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 and 8 TeV

This article presents differential measurements of the asymmetry between $ {\varLambda}_b^0 $ - $ {\overline{\varLambda}}_b^0 $ baryon production rates in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 8 TeV collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb -1 . The ${\varLambda}_b^0 $ baryons are reconstructed through the inclusive semileptonic decay ${\varLambda}_b^0 $ → Λ+c μ - $\overline{ν}$ μX. The production asymmetry is measured both in intervals of rapidity in the range 2.15 < y < 4.10 and transverse momentum in 2 < p T < 27 GeV/c. The results are found to be incompatible with symmetric production with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations for both $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 8 TeV data, assuming no CP violation in the decay. There is evidence for a trend as a function of rapidity with a significance of 4 standard deviations. Comparisons to predictions from hadronisation models in PYTHIA and heavy-quark recombination are provided. This result constitutes the first observation of a particle-antiparticle asymmetry in b-hadron production at LHC energies.

Search for the doubly heavy baryons $ {{{{\varOmega}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ and $ {{{{\varXi}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ decaying to $ {{{{\varLambda}^+_c}}} {{{{\pi}^-}}} $ and $ {{{{\varXi}^+_c}}} {{{{\pi}^-}}} $ *

The first search for the doubly heavy $ {{{{\varOmega}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ baryon and a search for the $ {{{{\varXi}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ baryon are performed using $ pp $ collision data collected via the $ {\rm{LHCb}} $ experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $ 13 \;{\rm{TeV}} $, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 $ \;{\rm{f}}{{\rm{b}}^{ - 1}} $. The baryons are reconstructed via their decays to $ {{{{\varLambda}^+_c}}} {{{{\pi}^-}}} $ and $ {{{{\varXi}^+_c}}} {{{{\pi}^-}}} $. No significant excess is found for invariant masses between 6700 and 7300 $ \;{\rm{MeV}}/{c^2} $, in a rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and a transverse momentum range from 2 to 20 $ \;{\rm{MeV}}/{c} $. Upper limits are set on the ratio of the $ {{{{\varOmega}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ and $ {{{{\varXi}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ production cross-section times the branching fraction to $ {{{{\varLambda}^+_c}}}{{{{\pi}^-}}} $ ( $ {{{{\varXi}^+_c}}}{{{{\pi}^-}}} $) relative to that of the $ {{{{\varLambda}^0_b}}} $ ( $ {{{{\varXi}_{b}^{0}}}} $) baryon, for different lifetime hypotheses, at 95% confidence level. The upper limits range from $ 0.5\times10^{-4} $ to $ 2.5\times10^{-4} $ for the $ {{{{{{{{\varOmega}_{bc}^{0}}}}{{\rightarrow }}{{{{\varLambda}^+_c}}}{{{{\pi}^-}}}}}}} $ ( $ {{{{{{{{\varXi}_{bc}^{0}}}}{{\rightarrow }}{{{{\varLambda}^+_c}}}{{{{\pi}^-}}}}}}} $) decay, and from $ 1.4\times10^{-3} $ to $ 6.9\times10^{-3} $ for the $ {{{{{{{{\varOmega}_{bc}^{0}}}}{{\rightarrow }}{{{{\varXi}^+_c}}}{{{{\pi}^-}}}}}}} $ ( $ {{{{{{{{\varXi}_{bc}^{0}}}}{{\rightarrow }}{{{{\varXi}^+_c}}}{{{{\pi}^-}}}}}}} $) decay, depending on the considered mass and lifetime of the $ {{{{\varOmega}_{bc}^{0}}}} $ ( $ {{{{\varXi}_{bc}^{0}}}} $) baryon.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Detection of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect with SDSS DR15 galaxies

We present a 5.4$\sigma$ detection of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect using Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and $\it{Planck}$ CMB observations in combination with Luminous Red Galaxy samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR15 catalog. Results are obtained using three ACT CMB maps: co-added 150 GHz and 98 GHz maps, combining observations from 2008-2018 (ACT DR5), which overlap with SDSS DR15 over 3,700 sq. deg., and a component-separated map using night-time only observations from 2014-2015 (ACT DR4), overlapping with SDSS DR15 over 2,089 sq. deg. Comparisons of the results from these three maps provide consistency checks in relation to potential frequency-dependent foreground contamination. A total of 343,647 galaxies are used as tracers to identify and locate galaxy groups and clusters from which the kSZ signal is extracted using aperture photometry. We consider the impact of various aperture photometry assumptions and covariance estimation methods on the signal extraction. Theoretical predictions of the pairwise velocities are used to obtain best-fit, mass-averaged, optical depth estimates for each of five luminosity-selected tracer samples. A comparison of the kSZ-derived optical depth measurements obtained here to those derived from the thermal SZ effect for the same sample is presented in a companion paper.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Probing the baryon content of SDSS DR15 galaxies with the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effects

We present high signal-to-noise measurements (up to 12$\sigma$) of the average thermal Sunyaev Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect from optically selected galaxy groups and clusters and estimate their baryon content within a 2.1$^\prime$ radius aperture. Sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) DR15 catalog overlap with 3,700 sq. deg. of sky observed by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) from 2008 to 2018 at 150 and 98 GHz (ACT DR5), and 2,089 sq. deg. of internal linear combination component-separated maps combining ACT and $\it{Planck}$ data (ACT DR4). The corresponding optical depths, $\bar{\tau}$, which depend on the baryon content of the halos, are estimated using results from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations assuming an AGN feedback radiative cooling model. We estimate the mean mass of the halos in multiple luminosity bins, and compare the tSZ-based $\bar{\tau}$ estimates to theoretical predictions of the baryon content for a Navarro-Frenk-White profile. We do the same for $\bar{\tau}$ estimates extracted from fits to pairwise baryon momentum measurements of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (kSZ) for the same data set obtained in a companion paper. We find that the $\bar{\tau}$ estimates from the tSZ measurements in this work and the kSZ measurements in the companion paper agree within $1\sigma$ for two out of the three disjoint luminosity bins studied, while they differ by 2-3$\sigma$ in the highest luminosity bin. The optical depth estimates account for one third to all of the theoretically predicted baryon content in the halos across luminosity bins. Potential systematic uncertainties are discussed. The tSZ and kSZ measurements provide a step towards empirical Compton-$\bar{y}$-$\bar{\tau}$ relationships to provide new tests of cluster formation and evolution models.

Observation of new excited ${B} ^0_{s}$ states

A structure is observed in the ${B} ^{\pm }{K} ^{\mp }$ mass spectrum in a sample of proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9$\,\text {fb} ^{-1}$. The structure is interpreted as the result of overlapping excited ${B} ^0_{s}$ states. With high significance, a two-peak hypothesis provides a better description of the data than a single resonance. Under this hypothesis the masses and widths of the two states, assuming they decay directly to ${B} ^{\pm }{K} ^{\mp }$, are determined to be $\begin{aligned} m_1&= 6063.5 \pm 1.2 \text { (stat)} \pm 0.8\text { (syst)}\,\text {Me}\text {V}, \\ \Gamma _1&= 26 \pm 4 \text { (stat)} \pm 4\text { (syst)}\,\text {Me}\text {V}, \\ m_2&= 6114 \pm 3 \text { (stat)} \pm 5\text { (syst)}\,\text {Me}\text {V}, \\ \Gamma _2&= 66 \pm 18 \text { (stat)} \pm 21\text { (syst)}\,\text {Me}\text {V}. \end{aligned}$ Alternative values assuming a decay through ${B} ^{*\pm }{K} ^{\mp }$, with a missing photon from the $B^{*\pm } \rightarrow B^{\pm }\gamma $ decay, which are shifted by approximately 45 $\,\text {Me}$V, are also determined. The possibility of a single state decaying in both channels is also considered. The ratio of the total production cross-section times branching fraction of the new states relative to the previously observed $B_{s2}^{*0}$ state is determined to be $0.87 \pm 0.15 \text { (stat)} \pm 0.19 \text { (syst)}$.

Searches for 25 rare and forbidden decays of D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ mesons

A search is performed for rare and forbidden charm decays of the form ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {h}^{\pm }{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{\left(\prime \right)\mp } $, where h ± is a pion or kaon and ℓ (')± is an electron or muon. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb –1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and 90 % confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between 1.4 × 10 –8 and 6.4 × 10 –6 . In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude.

Search for CP violation in $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+} \pi^{0}$ and $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+}\eta$ decays

Searches for CP violation in the two-body decays $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+} \pi^{0}$ and $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+}\eta$ (where h + denotes a π + or K + meson) are performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb –1 or 6 fb –1 of integrated luminosity. The π 0 and η mesons are reconstructed using the e + e – γ final state, which can proceed as three-body decays π 0 → e + e – γ and η → e + e – γ, or via the two-body decays π 0 → γγ and η → γγ followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes $D^{+}_{(s)}\to K^{0}_{S}h^{+}$ to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The CP asymmetries are measured to be A CP (D + →π + π 0 )=(–1.3±0.9±0.6)%, A CP (D + →K + π 0 )=(–3.2±4.7±2.1)%, A CP (D + →π + η)=(–0.2±0.8±0.4)%, A CP (D + →K + η)=(–6±10±4)%, A CP (D$^{+}_{s}$→K + π 0 )=(–0.8±3.9±1.2)%, A CP (D$^{+}_{s}$→π + η)=(0.8±0.7±0.5)%, A CP (D$^{+}_{s}$→K + η)=(0.9±3.7±1.1)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with no CP violation and mostly constitute the most precise measurements of A CP in these decay modes to date.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the ${{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} $ decay

A branching fraction measurement of the \({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} \) decay is presented using proton–proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \(5.0\,\text {fb} ^{-1} \) . The branching fraction is found to be \({\mathcal {B}} ({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} ) =(19.4 \pm \) \(1.8\pm 1.3 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-6}\) , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the \({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^-} {{\pi } ^+} \) , \({{D} ^+_{s}} {\rightarrow }{{K} ^+} {{K} ^-} {{\pi } ^+} \) and \({{D} ^-} {\rightarrow }{{K} ^+} {{\pi } ^-} {{\pi } ^-} \) branching fractions. This is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date. As this decay proceeds through a single amplitude involving a \(b{\rightarrow }u\) charged-current transition, the result provides information on non-factorisable strong interaction effects and the magnitude of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element \(V_{ub}\) . Additionally, the collision energy dependence of the hadronisation-fraction ratio \(f_s/f_d\) is measured through \({{\overline{B}} {}^0_{s}} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} \) and \({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^-} {{\pi } ^+} \) decays.

Measurement of CP observables in B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (*) π ± decays using two-body D final states

Measurements of CP observables in B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (*) π ± decays are presented, where D (∗) indicates a neutral D or D ∗ meson that is an admixture of meson and anti-meson states. Decays of the D (∗) meson to the Dπ 0 and Dγ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon. Decays of the D meson are reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K - , and π + π - final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions and collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0, 1.0, and 5.7 fb -1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements of partially reconstructed B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (∗) π ± with D → K ∓ π ± decays are the first of their kind, and a first observation of the B ± → (Dπ 0 ) D ∗ π ± decay is made with a significance of 6.1 standard deviations. All CP observables are measured with world-best precision, and in combination with other LHCb results will provide strong constraints on the CKM angle γ.

Search for long-lived particles decaying to e± μ∓ ν

Long-lived particles decaying to e±μ∓ν, with masses between 7 and 50GeV/c 2 and lifetimes between 2 and 50 ps, are searched for by looking at displaced vertices containing electrons and muons of opposite charges. The search is performed using 5.4 fb -1 of p p collisions collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$=13TeV. Three mechanisms of production of long-lived particles are considered: the direct pair production from quark interactions, the pair production from the decay of a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of 125GeV/c 2 , and the charged current production from an on-shell W boson with an additional lepton. No evidence of these long-lived states is obtained and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction are set on the different production modes.
