Accounting for uncertainty sources in pyrometric measurements: Variables affecting Surface Temperature measurements using the LLNL Streak Spectrometers

Here we present a detailed analysis of the error sensitivities of the LLNL temperature analysis package used in analyzing streak spectrometer data. These sensitivities include noise, temperature, wavelength, emissivity, missing bands, and missing data points. The analysis package was tested for its ability to accurately reconstruct randomly generated noisy data and found to perform within specifications.

Stastically determined experimental uncertainties in photon Doppler velocimetry (PDV) measurements

Shock-ramp experiments place high demands on the precision, accuracy, and temporal resolution of transformed velocimetry signals. To minimize uncertainty after total propagation of a shockramp experiment, ideally multiple PDV traces are used. However, each trace has some uncertainty that is a function of the PDV system and analysis of the velocimetry data. In order to determine a reasonable experimental estimate of minimum uncertainty, we calculate observed uncertainties in as-fielded PDV systems using multiple channels to sample the velocity on each shot. We also calculate the uncertainty’s sensitivity to choice of analysis methods.

Direct observations of shock-induced melting in a porous solid using time-resolved x-ray diffraction

Here in this work we provide direct evidence of shock-induced melting and associated kinetics in a porous solid (aluminum powder) using time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Unambiguous evidence of melting in 50% porous aluminum (Al) powder samples, shocked to peak pressures between ~13 - 19 GPa, was provided by the broadening of the Debye-Scherrer ring corresponding to the (111) peak. Shocked Al powder did not melt completely in any of our experiments within the durations of measurement. Incomplete (partial) melting of the powder, even after several hundreds of nanoseconds of shock loading, provides insights into thermal transport with Al powder particles under high-pressure dynamic loading. Such insights are quite valuable for developing well-constrained melting models and thermodynamic equations of state for porous Al and other porous solids relevant to planetary and materials science.

A multi-wavelength streaked optical pyrometer for dynamic shock compression measurements above 2500 K

This work presents a concept and implementation of a calibrated streaked spectral pyrometer (SSP) temperature diagnostic used in dynamically driven shock experiments on a two-stage gas gun. This system relies upon measuring the total system response using a tunable monochromator, a NIST-traceable calibrated power meter, and a SSP. The diagnostic performance is validated against previously measured temperatures of shock driven z-cut quartz at 99 GPa and 93 GPa. The results are found to agree with the literature to within 5% and are discussed in this manuscript. The experimental setup utilizes measurements from multiple SSP systems per sample, providing several independent measurements and substantially increasing confidence in the extrapolated shock driven sample temperature.
