Orbit improvement from satellite imaging data obtainable from the Mariner/Jupiter/Saturn 1977 missions

Equations of motion are established for a dynamic system in which a spacecraft flies close to and interacts with an outer planet and one or more of its satellites. For the computation of the state and mass partials needed in the orbit corrections, a set of variational equations is derived. These assume a notably compact form through the introduction of a matrix operator D. The above system of differential equations is integrated numerically on a computer.

On the use of the Hill variables in artificial satellite theory - Brouwer's theory.

By reformulating Brouwer's first-order satellite theory in terms of the Hill variables, it is demonstrated that these variables possess several advantages over the Delaunay variables. The final algorithm is simpler and more compact, there is no singularity at zero eccentricity, and the process of deriving the perturbations is considerably simplified. An algorithm for the computation of position and velocity is presented which is significantly simpler and faster in use than Brouwer's algorithm. Moreover, whereas the latter algorithm breaks down for circular and equatorial orbits, the present one holds for all eccentricities less than one and for all inclinations, with the exception of the critical inclination.

Grand Tour outer planet missions definition phase. Part 2: Minutes of meetings and official correspondence

A variety of imaging systems proposed for use aboard the Outer Planet Grand Tour Explorer are discussed and evaluated in terms of optimal resolution capability and efficient time utilization. It is pointed out that the planetary and satellite alignments at the time of encounter dictate a high degree of adaptability and versatility in order to provide sufficient image enhancement over earth-based techniques. Data compression methods are also evaluated according to the same criteria.

A note on 'The main problem of satellite theory for small eccentricities, by A. Deprit and A. Rom, 1970.'

Criticism of Deprit and Rom's (1970) extension of Brouwer's (1959) first-order satellite theory to the third order in J sub 2. It is noted that Deprit and Rom's theory suffers from the drawback that the perturbations of all orders are expressed as infinite power series in the eccentricity e. It is demonstrated that Deprit and Rom's reported failure to extend Brouwer's theory to the second order in a closed form by means of Lie transforms is due to an oversight and is not caused by difficulties inherent in the problem or in the particular perturbation method used.
