Arrhenius Analysis of the Degradation Modes in Emerging Photovoltaic Backsheets

With increasingly large-scale deployments of photovoltaic (PV) modules to meet global energy demands, interest in better establishing modules' lifespans is growing. We report on the performance of co-extruded polyolefin- (PO)-based backsheets as environmentally friendly alternatives to fluoropolymer-reinforced polyethylene-terephthalate (PET)-based backsheets using three hygrometric accelerated test conditions. After completing cumulative 4000 hours of aging, we analyzed data from electrical performance (I-V), surface roughness (gloss), and appearance (L, a*, b* color) characterizations to quantify degradation rates, quantify the corresponding activation energy, and cross-correlate between the characteristics examined, thereby providing insights into the relationship between physical characteristics and operating performance.

BACKFLIP: A Comparison of Emerging Non-Fluoropolymer-Based, Co-Extruded PV Backsheets to Industry-Benchmark Technologies

As the photovoltaic (PV) industry is rapidly expanding around the world, there has been an increasing interest in extending the lifespan of PV modules. Concern has also emerged regarding the recyclability of modules and their component materials, including fluoropolymer-based backsheets. Laminated polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) core backsheets have traditionally been used in the PV industry, but new, co-extruded polyolefin (PO) backsheets show promise as an improved alternative. Mini-module and coupon samples of seven different backsheets (made of layers including contemporary PET and fluoropolymers, novel PO, and polyamide (PA) materials) were run through hygrometric- or UV photolytic-accelerated aging to identify and better understand each material's degradation modes and the backsheets' field reliability. In addition to the artificial aging, the natural weathering methods used in this study are described. The comprehensive set of chemical, mechanical, and structural characterizations at intermittent read points in this study is presented, including: visual appearance and color; gloss; mechanical tensile testing; I-V performance; electroluminescence (EL) imaging; dielectric breakdown; FTIR-chemical structure; X-ray-polymer structure (WAXS); and DSC-crystalline content. After 4000 h of aging, a strong correlation occurs between initial physical characteristics (mechanical tensile test) and operating performance (EL and I-V characteristics). This presentation focuses on gloss, FTIR, and breakdown voltage measurements. Results for MiMo power, grayness from EL imaging, optical micrscopy, and specimen morphology (on extraction when cut from MiMos) is also presented.

Laminated polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) core backsheets have traditionally been used in the PV industry, but new, coextruded polyolefin (PO) backsheets show promise as an improved alternative. In this work, minimodule and coupon samples of seven different backsheets (made of layers including contemporary PET and fluoropolymers, novel PO, and polyamide materials) were run through hygrometric- or UV photolytic-accelerated aging to identify and better understand each material's degradation modes and the backsheets' field reliability. In addition to the artificial aging, the natural weathering methods used in this article are described. The comprehensive set of chemical, mechanical, and structural characterizations at intermittent read points in this article is presented, including: visual appearance and color; gloss; mechanical tensile testing; I-V performance; electroluminescence (EL) imaging; dielectric breakdown; Fourier-transform infrared-chemical structure; X-ray-polymer structure; and differential scanning calorimetry-crystalline content. After 4000 h of aging, a strong correlation occurs between initial physical characteristics (mechanical tensile test) and operating performance (EL and I-V characteristics).

BACKFLIP: Identification of Materials and Changes Upon Aging of Emerging Fluoropolymer-Free and Industry-Benchmark PV Backsheets

Extending lifetimes of photovoltaic (PV) modules and decreasing manufacturing and decommissioning costs are motivating research of novel PV module backsheet materials. Backsheet integrity is critical to the safety and performance of a PV module, however, the polymeric materials are often vulnerable to environmental degradation. The long-term durability of emerging polyolefin (PO) materials is being examined to inform regarding the possible replacement of laminated backsheets containing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) cores and fluoropolymer protective inner/outer layers. This study compares traditional PET-based backsheets with novel, co-extruded, and recyclable PO-based backsheets after being subjected to hygrometric and UV photolytic accelerated weathering. A large set of characterization methods will compare physical, chemical, structural, mechanical, and insulating properties of these backsheets and the resulting mini-module (MiMo) PV performances. The study of chemical composition, glass- and phase-transition temperatures, degree of crystallinity, and crystalline structure are described here.

Combinatorial Exploration and Mapping of Phase Transformation in a Ni–Ti–Co Thin Film Library

Combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput characterization of a Ni–Ti–Co thin film materials library are reported for exploration of reversible martensitic transformation. The library was prepared by magnetron co-sputtering, annealed in vacuum at 500 °C without atmospheric exposure, and evaluated for shape memory behavior as an indicator of transformation. Composition, structure, and transformation behavior of the 177 pads in the library were characterized using high-throughput wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and four-point probe temperature-dependent resistance (R(T)) measurements. A new, expanded composition space having phase transformation with low thermal hysteresis and Co > 10 at. % is found. Unsupervised machine learning methods of hierarchical clustering were employed to streamline data processing of the large XRD and XPS data sets. Through cluster analysis of XRD data, we identified and mapped the constituent structural phases. Finally, composition–structure–property maps for the ternary system are made to correlate the functional properties to the local microstructure and composition of the Ni–Ti–Co thin film library.

Combinatorial Synthesis and High-Throughput Characterization of Microstructure and Phase Transformation in Ni–Ti–Cu–V Quaternary Thin-Film Library

Ni–Ti–based shape memory alloys (SMAs) have found widespread use in the last 70 years, but improving their functional stability remains a key quest for more robust and advanced applications. Named for their ability to retain their processed shape as a result of a reversible martensitic transformation, SMAs are highly sensitive to compositional variations. Alloying with ternary and quaternary elements to fine-tune the lattice parameters and the thermal hysteresis of an SMA, therefore, becomes a challenge in materials exploration. Combinatorial materials science allows streamlining of the synthesis process and data management from multiple characterization techniques. In this study, a composition spread of Ni–Ti–Cu–V thin-film library was synthesized by magnetron co-sputtering on a thermally oxidized Si wafer. Composition-dependent phase transformation temperature and microstructure were investigated and determined using high-throughput wavelength dispersive spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and temperature-dependent resistance measurements. Of the 177 compositions in the materials library, 32 were observed to have shape memory effect, of which five had zero or near-zero thermal hysteresis. These compositions provide flexibility in the operating temperature regimes that they can be used in. A phase map for the quaternary system and correlations of functional properties are discussed with respect to the local microstructure and composition of the thin-film library.
