Search for Rare b → d ℓ + ℓ − Transitions at Belle

We present the results of a search for the b → d ℓ + ℓ − flavor-changing neutral-current rare decays B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π + , 0 , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π 0 , ρ + ) μ + μ − using a 711 fb − 1 data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We find no evidence for signal and set upper limits on branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the range ( 3.8 – 47 ) × 10 − 8 depending on the decay channel. The obtained limits are the world’s best results. This is the first search for the channels B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + ) μ + μ − . Search for the decay B 0 → γ γ using Belle and Belle II data

We report the result of a search for the rare decay B 0 → γ γ using a combined dataset of 753 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment from decays of the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance produced in e + e − collisions. A simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields 11.0 − 5.5 + 6.5 signal events, corresponding to a 2.5 σ significance. We determine the branching fraction B ( B 0 → γ γ ) = ( 3.7 − 1.8 + 2.2 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 8 and set a 90% credibility level upper limit of B ( B 0 → γ γ ) < 6.4 × 10 − 8 . Measurements of the Branching Fraction, Polarization, and C P Asymmetry for the Decay B 0 → ω ω

We present a comprehensive study of B 0 → ω ω decays using 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. This process is a suppressed charmless decay into two vector mesons and can exhibit interesting polarization and C P violation. The decay is observed for the first time with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction B = ( 1.53 ± 0.29 ± 0.17 ) × 10 − 6 , a fraction of longitudinal polarization f L = 0.87 ± 0.13 ± 0.13 , and a time-integrated C P asymmetry A C P = − 0.44 ± 0.43 ± 0.11 , where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of B 0 → ω ω and the first measurements of f L and A C P for this decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for a heavy neutral lepton that mixes predominantly with the tau neutrino

We report a search for a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) that mixes predominantly with ν τ . The search utilizes data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + e − collider. The data sample was collected at and just below the center-of-mass energies of the ϒ ( 4 S ) and ϒ ( 5 S ) resonances and has an integrated luminosity of 915 fb − 1 , corresponding to ( 836 ± 12 ) × 10 6 e + e − → τ + τ − events. We search for production of the HNL (denoted N ) in the decay τ − → π − N followed by its decay via N → μ + μ − ν τ . The search focuses on the parameter-space region in which the HNL is long-lived, so that the μ + μ − originate from a common vertex that is significantly displaced from the collision point of the KEKB beams. Consistent with the expected background yield, one event is observed in the data sample after application of all the event-selection criteria. We report limits on the mixing parameter of the HNL with the τ neutrino as a function of the HNL mass. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the semileptonic decays Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 ℓ + ℓ − at Belle

Using the full data sample of 980 fb − 1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider, we report the results of the first search for the rare semileptonic decays Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 ℓ + ℓ − ( ℓ = e or μ ). No significant signals are observed in the Ξ 0 ℓ + ℓ − invariant-mass distributions. Taking the decay Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + as the normalization mode, we report 90% credibility upper limits on the branching fraction ratios B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 e + e − ) / B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + ) < 6.7 × 10 − 3 and B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 μ + μ − ) / B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ − π + ) < 4.3 × 10 − 3 based on the phase-space assumption for signal decays. The 90% credibility upper limits on the absolute branching fractions of B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 e + e − ) and B ( Ξ c 0 → Ξ 0 μ + μ − ) are found to be 9.9 × 10 − 5 and 6.5 × 10 − 5 , respectively. Search for baryon and lepton number violating decays D → p ℓ

We search for the baryon and lepton number violating charm decays, D → p ℓ , where D is either a D 0 or a D ¯ 0 and ℓ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample of 921 fb − 1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + e − collider. In the absence of significant signals, we set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range ( 5 – 8 ) × 10 − 7 at a 90% confidence level, depending on the decay mode. First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive | V u b |

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V ub using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $Υ$(4S) resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb -1 . We analyze collision events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic X u system of the semileptonic b → $πℓe_ℓ$ decay. We separate exclusive B → $πℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ decays from other inclusive B → $X_uℓ\overline{ν}_ℓ$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit that utilizes the number of charged pions in the X u system and the four-momentum transfer q 2 between the B and X u systems. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the B → $πℓe_ℓ$ form factor, we determine |$V^{excl}_{ub}$| = (3.78 ± 0.23 ± 0.16 ± 0.14) × 10 -3 and |$V^{incl}_{ub}$| = (3.88 ± 0.20 ± 0.31 ± 0.09) x 10 -3 , respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of |$V^{excl}_{ub}$|/|$V^{incl}_{ub}$| 0.97 ± 0.12 is compatible with unity.

Measurement of the e + e - → $ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0X $ cross section in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV using inclusive $ {D}_s^{+} $ and D 0 production

We report the first measurement of the inclusive e + e - → $b\bar{b}$ → D$^±_s$ X and e + e - → $b\bar{b}$ → D 0 / $\overline{D}^0$ X cross sections in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV. We measure the fraction of ${B}_s^0$ events at Υ(10860) to be f s = (${22.0}_{-2.1}^{+2.0}$)%. We determine also the ratio of the ${B}_s^0$ inclusive branching fractions $\mathcal{B}$(${B}_s^0$ → D 0 / $\overline{D}^0$X)/$\mathcal{B}$(${B}_s^0$ → ${D}_s^{\pm }$X) = 0.416 ± 0.018 ± 0.092. The results are obtained using the data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider.

Search for the double-charmonium state with ηcJ/ψ at Belle

We measure the cross section of e + e - → ηcJ/ψ at the Υ(nS)(n = 1–5) on-resonance and 10.52 GeV off-resonance energy points using the full data sample collected by the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of 955 fb -1 . We also search for double charmonium production in e + e - → ηcJ/ψ via initial state radiation near the ηcJ/ψ threshold. No evident signal of the double charmonium state is found, but evidence for the e + e - → ηcJ/ψ process is found with a statistical significance greater than 3.3σ near the ηcJ/ψ threshold. The average cross section near the threshold is measured and upper limits of cross sections are set for other regions.

Study of the muon decay-in-flight in the τ - → μ - ν ¯ μ ν τ decay to measure the Michel parameter ξ '

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameter ξ' in the $\tau$ - → μ¯ $\overline{v}$ μ v $\tau$ decay using the full data sample of 988 fb -1 collected by the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric energy e + ⁢e - collider. The method is based on the reconstruction of the μ¯ → e⁢¯$\overline{v}$ e v μ decay-in-flight in the Belle central drift chamber and relies on the correlation between muon spin and its daughter electron momentum. We study the main sources of the background that can imitate the signal decay, such as kaon and pion decays-in-flight and charged particle scattering on the detector material. Highly efficient methods of their suppression are developed and applied to select 165 signal-candidate events. We obtain ξ' = 0.22±0.94±0.42 where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second one is systematic. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of ξ' = 1.

First measurement of the Q 2 distribution of X⁡(3915) single-tag two-photon production

We report the first measurement of the Q 2 distribution of X⁡(3915) produced by single-tag two-photon interactions. The decay mode used is X⁡(3915) →J/Ψ⁢ω. The covered Q 2 region is from 1.5 (GeV/c) 2 to 10.0 (GeV/c) 2 . We observe 7.9 ± 3.1⁢(stat) ± 1.5⁢(syst) events, where we expect 4.1 ± 0.7 events based on the Q 2 = 0 result from the no-tag two-photon process, extrapolated to higher Q 2 region using the $c\bar{c}$ model of Schuler, Berends, and van Gulik. The shape of the distribution is also consistent with this model; we note that statistical uncertainties are large

The signal from B 0 decays is observed for the first time with 5.2σ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral B decays is measured to be $\mathscr{B}$(B 0 → X⁡(3872)⁢K 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$⁡(B + →X⁡(3872)⁢K + ) =1.34$^{+0.47}_{-0.40}$⁢(stat) $^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$⁢(syst). First Observation of Λπ + and Λπ - Signals near the $\bar{K}$N⁡(I=1) Mass Threshold in Λ$^+_c$ → Λ⁢π + ⁢π + π - Decay

Using the data sample of 980 fb -1 collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider, we present the results of an investigation of the Λ⁢π + and Λ⁢π - invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay Λ$^+_c$ → Λ⁢π + π + π - . We find a significant signal in each mass distribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the Λπ + (Λ⁢π - ) combination a mass of 1434.3 ± 0.6⁢(stat) ± 0.9⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 [1438.5 ± 0.9⁢(stat) ± 2.5⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 ], an intrinsic width of 11.5 ± 2.8⁢(stat) ± 5.3⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 [33.0 ± 7.5⁢(stat) ± 23.6⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 ] with a significance of 7.5⁢σ (6.2⁢σ). As these two signals are very close to the $\bar{K}N$ threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a $\bar{K}N$ cusp, and find that we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.
