Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.

Trivalent f-Element Squarates, Squarate-Oxalates, and Cationic Materials, and the Determination of the Nine-Coordinate Ionic Radius of Cf(III)

The synthesis, structure, and solid-state UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy of four new f-element squarates, M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 (M = Eu, Am, Cf) and Sm(C 4 O 4 )(C 4 O 3 OH)(H 2 O) 2 ·0.5H 2 O, four new cationic lanthanide squarate chlorides, [M 4 (C 4 O 4 ) 5 (H 2 O) 12 ]Cl 2 ·5H 2 O (M = Eu, Dy, Ho Er), and two new actinide squarate oxalates, M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 2 (C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 4 (M = Am, Cf), are presented. All of the metal centers are trivalent. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 and Sm(C 4 O 4 )(C 4 O 3 OH)(H 2 O) 2 ·0.5H 2 O have a two-dimensional sheet structure constructed from MO 7 (H 2 O) 2 monocapped square-antiprismatic (coordination number (CN) = 9) metal centers and SmO 6 (H 2 O) 2 square-antiprismatic (CN = 8) metal centers, respectively, whereas M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 2 (C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 4 have a three-dimensional (3D) structure constructed from MO 7 (H 2 O) 2 monocapped square-antiprismatic (CN = 9) metal centers. Additionally, the cationic framework materials [M 4 (C 4 O 4 ) 5 (H 2 O) 12 ]Cl 2 ·5H 2 O have a 3D structure constructed from two crystallographically unique MO 5 (H 2 O) 3 square-antiprismatic (CN = 8) metal centers. In these structures, the squarate ligands bind to the metal centers with varying coordination modes and denticities. The results of this study provide another example of the nonparallel chemistry between the lanthanides and transplutonium elements. From the crystallographic data for the isotypic series M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 (M = La–Nd, Sm, Eu) and the linear regression fit to a plot of the unit cell volume as a function of the cube of the ionic radius, the nine-coordinate ionic radius of Cf 3+ was determined to be 1.127 ± 0.003 Å. Lastly, computational analysis of the americium and californium complexes M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 and M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 2 (C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 4 reveals three important attributes: (i) the 5f orbitals are nonbonding in all cases, with the bonding differences occurring with the empty 6d orbitals; (ii) the Cf complexes exhibit more covalent character than their Am counterparts; and (iii) there is more covalent character in the squarate-oxalate complexes than in the squarate complexes.

Examination of Molten Salt Reactor Relevant Elements Using Hydrothermal Synthesis

The structural chemistry of elements relevant to the FLiBe molten salt reactor, Th, U, Np, and Zr, including Ce andNd (as analogues for Pu and Am, respectively), have been examined using hydrothermal synthesis at 200 °C. These reactions serve to model the reaction of molten salts under hydrolysis conditions. The results show that U and Np formed LiAnF 5 , while Ce formed Li 4 CeF 8 . The source of U also controlled the crystal quality, where UO 2 gave small crystals, while UO 3 ·2H 2 O gave very large crystals. It is likely that Be incorporation was not observed because of the high solubility of [BeF 4 ] 2– in water. Zr formed a third product, Li 6 BeF 4 ZrF 8 , which features isolated [BeF 4 ] 2– and [ZrF 8 ] 4– units bridged by Li + . Additionally, Li 2 BeF 4 was regularly isolated. As a result, when little to no alkali metal was included in the reaction, M 3 F 12 (H 2 O) was isolated for Np, U, and Ce.

Gas-Phase Complexes of Americium and Lanthanides with a Bis-triazinyl Pyridine: Reactivity and Bonding of Archetypes for F-Element Separations

Bis-triazinyl pyridines (BTPs) exhibit solution selectivity for trivalent americium over lanthanides (Ln), the origins of which remain uncertain. Here in this paper, electrospray ionization was used to generate gas-phase complexes [ML 3 ] 3+ , where M = La, Lu, or Am and L is EtBTP 2,6-bis(5,6-diethyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-pyridine. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) of [ML 3 ] 3+ in the presence of H 2 O yielded a protonated ligand [L(H)] + and hydroxide [ML 2 (OH)] 2+ or hydrate [ML(L–H)(H 2 O)] 2+ , where (L–H) - is a deprotonated ligand. Although solution affinities indicate stronger binding of BTPs toward Am 3+ versus Ln 3+ , the observed CID process is contrastingly more facile for M = Am versus Ln. To understand the disparity, density functional theory was employed to compute potential energy surfaces for two possible CID processes, for M = La and Am. In accordance with the CID results, both the rate determining transition state barrier and the net energy are lower for [AmL 3 ] 3+ versus [LaL 3 ] 3+ and for both product isomers, [ML 2 (OH)] 2+ and [ML(L–H)(H 2 O)] 2+ . More facile removal of a ligand from [AmL 3 ] 3+ by CID does not necessarily contradict stronger Am 3+ –L binding, as inferred from solution behavior. In particular, the formation of new bonds in the products can distort kinetics and thermodynamics expected for simple bond cleavage reactions. In addition to correctly predicting the seemingly anomalous CID behavior, the computational results indicate greater participation of Am 5f versus La 4f orbitals in metal–ligand bonding.

Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions: Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions

A systematic investigation of uranyl borates under different synthetic conditions resulted in five new 2D compounds, namely, (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )], Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ], β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 . (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O) were obtained from hydrothermal reactions at 220 °C using the same mineralizer. Both materials possess the uranophane sheet topology with different symmetry of the unit cells. In the structure of (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), UO 7 pentagonal bipyramids share edges and vertexes with four BO 3 planar triangles. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] are polytypes. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction under ambient pressure; whereas β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was obtained from a high-temperature/high-pressure (HT/HP) reaction. Both structures have an identical anion topology, but β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] crystallizes in space group with higher symmetry. In K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 , which was obtained from a hydrothermal reaction, UO 7 polyhedra share vertexes and edges with two independent BO 3 triangles, forming the most complex uranyl borate layers among all five compounds. The different synthetic routes, novel topologies, thermal behavior and Raman spectra are discussed.
