Application of Machine Learning to Assist a Moisture Durability Tool

The design of moisture-durable building enclosures is complicated by the number of materials, exposure conditions, and performance requirements. Hygrothermal simulations are used to assess moisture durability, but these require in-depth knowledge to be properly implemented. Machine learning (ML) offers the opportunity to simplify the design process by eliminating the need to carry out hygrothermal simulations. ML was used to assess the moisture durability of a building enclosure design and simplify the design process. This work used ML to predict the mold index and maximum moisture content of layers in typical residential wall constructions. Results show that ML, within the constraints of the construction, including exposure conditions, does an excellent job in predicting performance compared to hygrothermal simulations with a coefficient of determination, R2, over 0.90. Furthermore, the results indicate that the material properties of the vapor barrier and continuous insulation layer are strongly correlated to performance.

Transformative Building Envelope Retrofit Using Insulation-Inflatable Walls Assisted by Automation

This work highlights the effort to develop a low-cost envelope retrofit for homes built prior to the implementation of energy conservation measures established by the Department of Energy. Inflatable structures were constructed to conform to the exterior envelope (a corner wall construction with a fenestration was used as a prototype). The structures were then filled with spray polyurethane foam insulation. The flexibility in construction and the ability to fill with spray polyurethane foam insulation were demonstrated. In addition, hygrothermal simulations showed that the installation of these systems does not compromise the moisture durability of uninsulated and insulated building envelopes across eight climate zones from hot humid to subarctic. Preliminary cost estimates, based on retail pricing, of the inflatable retrofit including 3 inches of spray foam insulation (insulation value of approximately R 20) is $\$ 4.25$ per square foot uninstalled. The installed cost was calculated using two labor rates, the labor rate for the installation of a weather resistive barrier and the installation of spray foam insulation. Aggregating those values into one labor rate results in an installed cost between $\$ 11$ and $\$ 28$ per square foot. The low end includes the installation of vinyl siding as the exterior cladding. The higher value includes an exterior stucco finish.

Performance Assessment of the Overall Building Envelope Thermal Performance—Building Envelope Performance (BEP) Metric

Today, to describe the thermal performance of the building envelope and its components we use a variation of metrics; such as, R-value, ACH (air exchange rate per hour), SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) of windows, U-factor etc. None of these performance indicators is meant to represent the overall thermal performance. In this paper, such a metric is introduced, the BEP (building envelope performance) value. Unlike the thermal resistance, typically expressed as an R-value, the BEP-value considers additional elements of heat transfer that affect the energy demand of the building because of exterior and interior (solar) thermal loads: conductive and radiant heat transfer, and air infiltration. To demonstrate BEP’s utility, validation studies were carried out by comparing the BEP-value to theoretical results using whole building energy simulation tools such as EnergyPlus and WUFI Plus. Results show that BEP calculations are comparable to calculations made using these simulation tools and that unlike other similar metrics, the BEP-value accounts for all heat transfer mechanisms that are relevant for the overall energy performance of the building envelope. The BEP-value thus allows comparing envelopes of buildings with different use types in a fair and realistic manner.
