Progress towards halo modeling at the SNS Beam Test Facility

The SNS beam test facility is a model of the SNS front end (source through medium-energy transport). On-going work at the BTF focuses on accurate modeling of the beam distribution to enable the prediction of halo losses (>100 parts per million). This presentation will discuss the latest progress towards this goal, including recent results after a reconfiguration of the test beamline. Good agreement within the 90% beam core is shown for a 30 mA beam at 2.5 MeV.

Recent progress in laser wire-based H- beam diagnostics at the SNS linac

Laser wire has been used for nonintrusive profile and emittance measurements of operational hydrogen ion (H-) beam at the SNS linac. In this talk, we will describe the following recent developments in the laser wire system. 1) An upgraded light source and laser transport line which enables novel measurement capabilities including longitudinal profile measurement and high-energy proton beam extraction over potentially an entire macropulse. 2) A dual-detector emittance measurement scheme that boosted the dynamic range by an order of magnitude. 3) Design and implementation laser-wire-based nonintrusive longitudinal phase space measurement system.

Measurement and modeling of beam transport in the FODO line of the Spallation Neutron Source Beam Test Facility

Ongoing studies at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Beam Test Facility (BTF) seek to understand and model bunch dynamics in a high-power LINAC front-end. The BTF has recently been upgraded with a reconfiguration from a U-shaped line to a Straight line. We report the current state of model benchmarking, with a focus on RMS beam sizes within the FODO line. The beam measurement is obtained via three camera/screen pairs in the FODO line. This presentation discusses the methodology and results of this measurement.

The Impact of High-Dimensional Phase Space Correlations on the Beam Dynamics in a Linear Accelerator

Hadron beams develop intensity-dependent transverse-longitudinal correlations within radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerating structures. These correlations are only visible in six-dimensional phase space and are destroyed by reconstructions from low-dimensional projections. In this work, we estimate the effect of artificial decorrelation on the beam dynamics in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linac and Beam Test Facility (BTF). We show that the evolution of a realistic initial distribution and its decorrelated twin converge during the early acceleration stages; thus, low-dimensional projections are probably sufficient for detailed predictions in high-power linacs.

Measurements at peak operational beam current in the SNS beam test facility

Work at the SNS beam test facility has focused on high dimensional and high dynamic range measurements of the medium energy (2.5 Mev) beam distribution. This is motivated by the need to understand and predict beam losses down to one-part-per-million. The initial demonstration of full-and-direct 6D phase space measurement was done at a current of 40 mA transported through the RFQ. Since that demonstration, more detailed studies have been performed at lower transported currents (in the range 30 mA and below). This is due to a hardware change - recent runs utilize the original SNS RFQ, which after a decade of service in the SNS achieves transmission significantly below design (50-60%, vs >80%). A short run in 2023 with a newly-commissioned RFQ enables maximum transmission. Preliminary results from beam distribution measurements during this run are discussed.

Measurements of the Five-Dimensional Phase Space Distribution of an Intense Ion Beam

No simulation of intense beam transport has accurately reproduced measurements at the level of beam halo. One potential explanation of this discrepancy is a lack of knowledge of the initial distribution of particles in six-dimensional (6D) phase space. A direct 6D measurement of an ion beam was recently performed at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Beam Test Facility (BTF), revealing nonlinear transverse-longitudinal correlations in the beam core that affect downstream evolution. Unfortunately, direct 6D measurements are limited in resolution and dynamic range; here, we discuss the use of three slits and one screen to measure a 5D projection of the 6D phase space distribution, overcoming these limitations at the cost of one dimension. We examine the measured 5D distribution before and after transport through the BTF and compare to particle-in-cell simulations. We also discuss the possibility of reconstructing the 6D distribution from 5D and 4D projections.

Real-Time Longitudinal Profile Measurement of Operational H⁻ Beam at the SNS Linac Using a Laser Comb

We demonstrate a novel technique to measure the longitudinal profile of an operational hydrogen ion (H⁻) beam in a non intrusive, real-time fashion. The measurement is conducted based on the photo-ionization of the ion beam with a phase modulated laser comb pico-second laser pulses with controllable temporal structure. The measurement technique has been applied to a 1-GeV, 1.4-MW H⁻ beam at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) high energy beam transport (HEBT). A stroboscopic photo-graph of H⁻ beamμbunch can be obtained by using a phase modulated laser comb. The entire measurement takes only 700 us.
