Automated X-Ray Tomographic Defect Analysis in High Density Carbon Capsules

High density carbon capsule ablators are of primary interest for National Ignition Facility experiments. Two of the major contributors to hydrodynamic instabilities in these capsules are voids and high-density inclusions, where the quantity and size of these defects can result in lower yields in inertial confinement fusion. To aid in capsule selection, General Atomics developed a LabVIEW analysis routine to quantify these defects based off a large field of view tomographic dataset and provide insight into the quality of the capsule. Furthermore, this analysis determines if there are large voids or inclusions that may affect shot performance and helps rank which capsules should be used.

Magnon-spinon dichotomy in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb β-Li 2 IrO 3

The family of edge-sharing tricoordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin-liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually preempted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-one-dimensional spin chains. Here in this paper we present a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate β-Li 2 IrO 3 under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16 meV. A 2 T magnetic field softens the dispersion around Q = 0. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnonlike mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35 meV and extending up to 100 meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300 K—well above the ordering temperature of 38 K—and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

Macro-Scale Findings of the DebriSat Debris Field Obtained from X-Rays of the Catch Panels

The DebriSat project analyzes the debris from a hypervelocity impact test conducted on a 56 kg-simulated satellite target in 2014. Its purpose is to generate a comprehensive database of the size, mass, material, shape, and the radar and optical properties of fragments generated from orbital collisions of modern-built spacecraft. Three hundred ninety-one foam catch panels from the DebriSat test have been X-rayed to locate the particles within them for subsequent extraction and assessment. The data from the tens of thousands of extracted particles has heretofore been the focus of the debris assessment. The work presented here connects the X-ray sample location images to reconstruct the 3D distribution of the entire fragment cloud. Although some errors are inherent to the process, this 3D database is valuable for qualitative studies of size and energy distributions. Further, the 3D database can indicate the extent of bending or breaking of the fragments as they decelerated to full capture. By virtue of its full sphere perspective, the 3D database allows graphical insight to the physics of the collision and breakup. This 3D representation has been developed as a “point and click” graphical interface to retrieve the full data set on individual recovered and assessed fragments within the growing database. Overall, this macro-level screening technique has added enormous insight to the experiment in unexpected ways.
