The photoionization cross section of magnesium near threshold.

Description of a method for calculating the photoionization cross section of magnesium, using the technique of configuration reaction in the continuum. The two series of levels which give rise to autoionization near the threshold are explicitly included in the calculation. The described method is a logical extension of the basic technique developed by Atlick and Moore (1966) for similar calculations in application to helium.

Calculation of photoionization cross section near auto-ionizing lines and magnesium photoionization cross section near threshold

The research performed is briefly reviewed. A simple method was developed for the calculation of continuum states of atoms when autoionization is present. The method was employed to give the first theoretical cross section for beryllium and magnesium; the results indicate that the values used previously at threshold were sometimes seriously in error. These threshold values have potential applications in astrophysical abundance estimates.

A simple, radially correlated ground state wavefunction for two electron atoms.

A one parameter function is presented as an approximation to the ground state wavefunction of the two electron radial hamiltonian. The parameter may be fixed by a nonvariational criterion. The resulting expectation value of the radial hamiltonian differs from its exact eigenvalue by about 2 parts in 3000 for helium while the 'local energy' never differs by more than 10% from the exact value over the entire r1-r2 plane. The cases Z = 1 and Z = 3 are also investigated.
