Unconventional fieldlike spin torques in CrPt 3

The topological semimetal CrPt 3 has potential for generating unconventional spin torques due to its ferrimagnetic ordering, topological band structure, and high anomalous Hall effect. CrPt 3 exhibits ferrimagnetic behavior only in its chemically ordered phase and is paramagnetic in its chemically disordered phase. By controlling the growth and annealing temperatures, we prepare epitaxial films of both chemically ordered and chemically disordered phases of CrPt 3 , allowing us to investigate the effect of magnetic ordering on unconventional-torque generation. We use angle-dependent spin-torque-ferromagnetic-resonance and second-harmonic Hall measurements to probe the spin torques generated from epitaxial CrPt 3 in CrPt 3 /Cu/Ni 81 ⁢Fe 19 heterostructures. With current applied along specific directions with respect to the crystal order, we reveal unconventional spin torques in both ordered and disordered films. When current flows parallel to the [$1\bar{1}1$] and [ $\bar{1}11$] directions, we observe an unconventional fieldlike torque that is opposite in sign for the two directions. Finally, our calculations reveal that this unconventional torque originates from an indirect nonlocal spin-orbit torque due to spin scattering at the CrPt 3 /Cu interface, in addition to symmetry breaking at this interface.

Suppression of spin pumping at metal interfaces

An electrically conductive metal typically transmits or absorbs a spin current. Here, we report on evidence that interfacing two metal thin films can suppress spin transmission and absorption. We examine spin pumping in spin-source/spacer/spin-sink heterostructures, where the spacer consists of metallic Cu and Cr thin films. The Cu/Cr spacer largely suppresses spin pumping—i.e., neither transmitting nor absorbing a significant amount of spin current—even though Cu or Cr alone transmits a sizable spin current. The antiferromagnetism of Cr is not essential for the suppression of spin pumping, as we observe similar suppression with Cu/V spacers with V as a nonmagnetic analog of Cr. We speculate that diverse combinations of spin-transparent metals may form interfaces that suppress spin pumping, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Our work may stimulate a new perspective on spin transport in metallic multilayers.

Large exotic spin torques in antiferromagnetic iron rhodium.

Spin torque is a promising tool for driving magnetization dynamics for computing technologies. These torques can be easily produced by spin-orbit effects, but for most conventional spin source materials, a high degree of crystal symmetry limits the geometry of the spin torques produced. Magnetic ordering is one way to reduce the symmetry of a material and allow exotic torques, and antiferromagnets are particularly promising because they are robust against external fields. We present spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements and second harmonic Hall measurements characterizing the spin torques in anti -ferromagnetic iron rhodium alloy. We report extremely large, strongly temperature-dependent exotic spin torques with a geometry apparently defined by the magnetic ordering direction. We find the spin torque efficiency of iron rhodium to be (207 +/- 94)% at 170 K and (88 +/- 32)% at room temperature. We support our conclusions with theoretical calculations showing how the antiferromagnetic ordering in iron rhodium gives rise to such exotic torques.

Phase-resolved electrical detection of coherently coupled magnonic devices

We demonstrate the electrical detection of magnon-magnon hybrid dynamics in yttrium iron garnet/Permalloy (YIG/Py) thin film bilayer devices. Direct microwave current injection through the conductive Py layer excites the hybrid dynamics consisting of the uniform mode of Py and the first standing spin wave (n=1) mode of YIG, which are coupled via interfacial exchange. Both the two hybrid modes, with Py- or YIG-dominated excitations, can be detected via the spin rectification signals from the conductive Py layer, providing phase resolution of the coupled dynamics. The phase characterization is also applied to a nonlocally excited Py device, revealing the additional phase shift due to the perpendicular Oersted field. Our results provide a device platform for exploring hybrid magnonic dynamics and probing their phases, which are crucial for implementing coherent information processing with magnon excitations.

Coherent Spin Pumping in a Strongly Coupled Magnon-Magnon Hybrid System

Here, we experimentally identify coherent spin pumping in the magnon-magnon hybrid modes of yttrium iron garnet/permalloy (YIG/Py) bilayers. By reducing the YIG and Py thicknesses, the strong interfacial exchange coupling leads to large avoided crossings between the uniform mode of Py and the spin wave modes of YIG enabling accurate determination of modification of the linewidths due to the dampinglike torque. We identify additional linewidth suppression and enhancement for the in-phase and out-of-phase hybrid modes, respectively, which can be interpreted as concerted dampinglike torque from spin pumping. Furthermore, varying the Py thickness shows that both the fieldlike and dampinglike couplings vary like 1/$\sqrt{𝑡_{Py}}$, verifying the prediction by the coupled Landau-Lifshitz equations.
