Stopping Force Analysis of 235 U Elemental Fission Product Yields for $E_n$ = 0.11–92.4 MeV

We report most evaluated elemental fission product yield distributions are not experimentally measured. Instead, the majority of evaluated distributions are based on analytic expressions of the Zp-model for relevant cumulative yields. Here we report independent elemental fission product yield distributions of a 235 U target for incident neutron energies ranging from 0.11 MeV through 92.4 MeV. Atomic numbers are calculated by an approach that combines a 2E analysis with a stopping force analysis method, developed within this paper. These analyses are applied to more than 6.1 × 10 6 fission fragment ionization tracks captured within the NIFFTE (Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment) collaboration fission time projection chamber (fissionTPC). A 3-Z resolution was obtained with the fissionTPC spatial and energy resolutions. Tabulated results are presented for the atomic yield and experimentally derived Zp values as a function of pre-neutron-emission fragment masses for the complete range of incident neutron energies. The stopping-force-derived Zp values tend to support the unchanged charge distribution theory within uncertainty.

Measurement of the Ne 18 ( α , p ) Na 21 reaction with the ANASEN active-target detector system at E c . m . = 2.5 – 4 MeV

The 18 Ne(α,p) 21 Na reaction plays a significant role in Type-I X-ray bursts. It is a major path in the breakout from the hot-CNO cycles to the synthesis of heavier elements in the αp- and rp-processes. An experiment to determine the cross section of this reaction was performed with the ANASEN active-target detector system, determining the cross section at energies between 2.5 and 4 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. The measured cross sections for reactions populating the ground state in 21 Na are consistent with results obtained from the time-inverse reaction, but significantly lower than the previously published experimental data of direct measurements. The total cross sections are also compared with those derived from indirect methods and statistical-model calculations. Furthermore, this experiment establishes a new experimental data set on the excitation function of the 18 Ne(α,p) 21 Na reaction, revealing the significance of the excited states' contributions to the total reaction cross section and allowing us to separate the contribution of the (α,2p) reaction. The impact of the measured cross section on thermal reaction rates is discussed.

Measurement of the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) Cross-Section Ratio with the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber

In this work, the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) cross-section ratio has been measured with the fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) from 100 keV to 100 MeV. The fissionTPC provides three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles, allowing for a precise quantification of measurement uncertainties. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center which provides a pulsed white source of neutrons. The data are recommended to be used as a cross-section ratio shape. A discussion of the status of the absolute normalization and comparisons to ENDF evaluations and previous measurements is included.

Measurement of material isotopics and atom number ratio with α-particle spectroscopy for a NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber actinide target

In this work, we present the results of a measurement of isotopic concentrations and atomic number ratio of a double-sided actinide target using α-spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The double-sided actinide target, with predominantly 239 Pu on one side and 235 U on the other, was used in the fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) for a measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross-section ratio between the two isotopes. The measured atomic number ratio is needed to extract an absolute measurement fission cross-section ratio. The 239 Pu/ 235 U atom number ratio was measured with a combination of mass spectrometry and α-spectroscopy with a planar silicon detector achieving uncertainties of less than 1%. Different strategies for estimating isotopic concentration from the α-spectrum are presented to demonstrate the potential of these methods for non-destructive target assay. We found that a combination of fitting spectra with constraints from mass spectrometry, and summing counts in a region of the spectrum provided the most consistent results with the lowest uncertainty.

Indirect determination of the astrophysical S factor for the Li 6 ( p , γ ) Be 7 reaction using the asymptotic normalization coefficient method

The 6 Li(p,γ) 7 Be cross section influences a variety of astrophysical scenarios, including big-bang and stellar nucleosynthesis. In recent years, conflicting results of direct measurements have been published, reporting contradictory low-energy trends. To shed light on the contradiction between the existing data sets, the reaction was studied using the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) technique which was up-to-now never used for this reaction. To derive the ANC, the 6 Li( 3 He,d) 7 Be transfer reaction, studied at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania and at the John. D. Fox Superconducting Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University, was re-analyzed, focusing on the proton transfer mechanism [the α transfer process is discussed by Kiss et al. [Phys. Lett. B 807, 135606 (2020)]. Here, the energy of the 3 He beam impinging on a 6 Li target was E lab = 3 MeV and E lab = 5 MeV. The yield of the emitted deuterons was measured with high precision by using silicon ΔE – E telescopes.

Fission TPC FY2020 Report (Mid Q2 FY2021): Preliminary 235 U(n,f)/ 6 Li(n,t)α Cross Section Ratio Analysis & Update on the 239 Pu(n,f) Data Collection

Fission TPC L2 Milestone Description: The fission TPC experimental campaign is in its final stages of collecting high precision (n,f) cross section data aimed at improving our understanding of the 239 Pu fission process. During FY 2019 235 U(n,f)/ 6 Li(n,t) ratio data collection began at WNR/LANSCE. This data is the first step in demonstrating the efficacy of 6 Li(n,t) as a diagnostic standard for a 239 Pu(n,f) ratio measurement. In FY 2020 and FY2021, the NIFFTE Collaboration will analyze 235 U(n,f)/ 6 Li(n,t) data already collected to establish this technique in preparation for 239 Pu(n,f)/ 6 Li(n,t) ratio data. Additionally, the ability to vapor deposit 239 Pu was developed in 2019, greatly improving target quality. As access to experimental facilities allows, 239 Pu/ 235 U and 239 Pu/ 6 Li data will be collected to provide new inputs for evaluation of the 239 Pu(n,f) cross section.
