Upgrade of the helically symmetric experiment Thomson scattering diagnostic suite

The Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) Thomson Scattering (TS) diagnostic is being upgraded to decrease uncertainty in electron temperature and density measurements. Upgrades to the HSX TS diagnostic will consist of a novel redesign of polychromator electronics and digitization of the TS output signal. Here, we also present a study of the benefits of an additional spectral channel that will sample the red-shifted band of the scattered spectrum. In conclusion, to maximize system bandwidth (BW) and gain, while minimizing noise, the existing low-BW polychromator electronics on HSX will be replaced by high-BW, high gain circuitry designed in-house.

Improving the stellarator through advances in plasma theory

Improvements to the stellarator concept can be realized through advancements in theoretical and computational plasma physics. Herein, recent advances are reported in the topical areas of: (1) improved energetic ion confinement, (2) the impact of three-dimensional (3D) shaping on turbulent transport, (3) reducing coil complexity, (4) novel optimization and design methods, and (5) computational magnetohydrodynamic tools. Furthermore, these advances enable the development of new stellarator configurations with improved confinement properties.

Laser blow-off with photodiode detection system at the helically symmetric experiment

Abstract A laser blow-off (LBO) system has been installed in the HSX stellarator to investigate impurity transport. A Nd:YAG laser is used to ablate a target area on a glass slide that has been coated with a thin film of aluminum and rapidly deposits a small, controlled quantity of aluminum atoms into HSX plasma. To study the radial propagation and confinement of the injected aluminum impurities, time-resolved emission measurements are made using a 20 channel AXUV photodiode detection system. The LBO system has achieved its design purpose, most notably the ability to make controlled impurity injection without significant perturbation to the background plasma. A detailed description of the setup as well as initial results of operation are presented.

Constrained stellarator coil curvature optimization with FOCUS

Finding less complicated coils that have adequately low field errors is a crucial step in stellarator development. One coil metric that is of high importance is the maximum curvature of the coil centreline, or coil single filament. Conductors cannot be bent below some threshold minimum radius of curvature. High coil curvatures can cause strains to exceed acceptable levels, especially in superconducting coils. We investigate three ways to optimize coil curvature and find that applying penalty functions to the coil curvature solves for coils that have a constrained maximum curvature and low field error. Penalty functions are implemented in FOCUS and coil solutions optimized for an HSX-like ‘plasma boundary’ are presented.

Advancing the physics basis for quasi-helically symmetric stellarators

A new optimized quasi-helically symmetric configuration is described that has the desirable properties of improved energetic particle confinement, reduced turbulent transport by three-dimensional shaping and non-resonant divertor capabilities. The configuration presented in this paper is explicitly optimized for quasi-helical symmetry, energetic particle confinement, neoclassical confinement and stability near the axis. Post optimization, the configuration was evaluated for its performance with regard to energetic particle transport, ideal magnetohydrodynamic stability at various values of plasma pressure and ion temperature gradient instability induced turbulent transport. The effects of discrete coils on various confinement figures of merit, including energetic particle confinement, are determined by generating single-filament coils for the configuration. Preliminary divertor analysis shows that coils can be created that do not interfere with expansion of the vessel volume near the regions of outgoing heat flux, thus demonstrating the possibility of operating a non-resonant divertor.

Life on ice, Antarctica and Mars

The study of the origin of life and the prospects for human exploration of Mars are two themes developed in a new 57-minute film, Life on Ice, Antarctica, and Mars, produced by the InnerSpace Foundation and WHRO Television for broadcast by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). A brief explanation of the film and how it relates to the future human exploration of space is presented.
