Hydrogen Peroxide on the Surface of Europa

Spatially resolved infrared and ultraviolet wavelength spectra of Europa's leading, anti-jovian, quadrant observed from the Galileo spacecraft show absorption features due to hydrogen peroxide.

Sulfuric Acid in the Icy Crust of Europa

Infrared spectra of Europa's surface obtained by the Galileo spacecraft show hydrated compounds identified here as sulfuric acid octahydrate and sulfuric acid hemihexahydrate.

Thermal Decomposition of Fullerene Mix

Experiments to determine the cause of fullerene decomposition at temperatures above 973k were conducted by spectroscopic analysis of samples heated in vacuo.

Nested Fullerenes on Graphite

A novel method of forming nested fullerenes by irradiation of carbon soot using the high energy beam in a 300-kV electron microscope.

Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC) contamination control assessment

The major concern of this study was the formation of a haze on the transmissive optics when exposed to a vacuum environment. The phenomena was determined to be a result of molecular transport from a low outgassing structural adhesive. Detailed analysis, both chemical and analytical, were conducted to assess the formation of the haze. Results of the study are given as well as information on clean-up and problem elimination.

Maag, C.

Structural dynamics analysis

Dynamic analysis of large space antenna systems must treat the deployment as well as vibration and control of the deployed antenna. Candidate computer programs for deployment dynamics, and issues and needs for future program developments are reviewed. Some results for mast and hoop deployment are also presented. Modeling of complex antenna geometry with conventional finite element methods and with repetitive exact elements is considered. Analytical comparisons with experimental results for a 15 meter hoop/column antenna revealed the importance of accurate structural properties including nonlinear joints. Slackening of cables in this antenna is also a consideration. The technology of designing actively damped structures through analytical optimization is discussed and results are presented.

BIOSPEX: Biological space experiments, a compendium of life sciences experiments carried on US spacecraft

United States space life science experiments, encompassing 27 years of experience beginning with sounding rocket flights carrying primates (1948) to the last U.S. spaceflight, the joint US/USSR Apollo Test Project (1975), are presented. The information for each experiment includes Principal Investigators, the program and mission on which it was flown, the specimens used, the objectives, protocol, equipment, results, conclusions, and bibliographic reference citations for publications derived from each experiment.

Heart-rate pulse-shift detector

Detector circuit accurately separates and counts phase-shift pulses over wide range of basic pulse-rate frequency, and also provides reasonable representation of full repetitive EKG waveform. Single telemeter implanted in small animal monitors not only body temperature but also animal movement and heart rate.
