Simulating the Liaison Navigation Concept in a Geo + Earth-Moon Halo Constellation

Linked Autonomous Interplanetary Satellite Orbit Navigation, or LiAISON, is a novel satellite navigation technique where relative radiometric measurements between two or more spacecraft in a constellation are processed to obtain the absolute state of all spacecraft. The method leverages the asymmetry of the gravity field that the constellation exists in. This paper takes a step forward in developing a high fidelity navigation simulation for the LiAISON concept in an Earth-Moon constellation. In particular, we aim to process two-way Doppler measurements between a satellite in GEO orbit and another in a halo orbit about the Earth-Moon L1 point.

Application of local Lyapunov exponents to maneuver design and navigation in the three-body problem

Dynamical systems theory has recently been employed for several missions to design trajectories within the three-body problem. This research applied a stability technique, the calculation of local Lyapunov exponents, to such trajectories. Local Lyapunov exponents give an indication of the effects that perturbations or maneuvers will have on trajectories over a specified time.

On the determination of series resistance and diode quality factor of solar cells

The series resistance and diode quality factor are used for evaluation of solar cell performance. These parameters are normally deduced from the terminal I-V characteristics under forward bias. The method produces a smaller series resistance and a larger value for diode quality factor than appropriate for the device when operating as a solar cell. It is suggested that the diode quality factor be determined from measured saturated photocurrent, open circuit voltage characteristics and the series resistance be measured with an r-f bridge or calculated from a measurement of the surface sheet resistance.

Glass-Si heterojunction solar cells

Experimental studies and models for In2O3/Si and SnO2/N-Si solar cells are considered for their suitability in terrestrial applications. The silicon is the active material, and the glass serves as the window to solar radiation, an antireflection coating of the Si, and a low resistance contact. Results show that amorphous windows or layers suppress photocurrent. The interfacial SiO2 layer suppresses photocurrent and increases series resistance. Suppression increases with illumination.

Evaluation of a high response electrohydraulic digital control valve

The application is described of a digital control valve on an electrohydraulic servo actuator. The digital control problem is discussed in general as well as the design and evaluation of a breadboard actuator. The evaluation revealed a number of problems associated with matching the valve to a hydraulic load. The problems were related to lost motion resulting from bulk modulus and leakage. These problems were effectively minimized in the breadboard actuator by maintaining a 1000 psi back pressure on the valve circuit and thereby improving the effective bulk modulus.

Design and evaluation of an electrohydraulic servoactuator using active standby redundancy

The application is described of active standby redundancy techniques to a large electrohydraulic servoactuator. The advantages and limitations of active standby redundancy are identified. Special areas of investigation during the development test phase of the program were the evaluation of output transients as a function of channel switching and the nuisance switching characteristics of the system. The feasibility of constructing large electrohydraulic servoactuators using active standby redundancy was successfully demonstrated. In particular the stability and predictability of a properly designed hydromechanical failure detector was demonstrated.
