Coulomb Friction Damper

Standard hydraulic shock absorber modified to form coulomb (linear friction) damper. Device damps very small velocities and is well suited for use with large masses mounted on soft springs. Damping force is easily adjusted for different loads. Dampers are more reliable than fluid dampers and also more economical to build and to maintain.

Mechanical-load indicator

By rotation of washerlike part, mechanical indicator shows when predetermined compression or tension load has been reached. Indicator consists of bolt, sleeve, load-indicating washer, and nut. Besides application as load indicator, device has uses as remote indicator of mechanical action. Rotating washer can also act as sequencer, signaling action to begin upon attainment of certain load. It can be used, for example, to initiate work cycle after stored energy has been built up in hydraulic or pneumatic power equipment. It can also be used as remote, nonelectrical switch in hazardous environments.

Compact rotary sequencer

Rotary sequencer is assembled from conventional planetary differential gearset and latching mechanism utilizing inputs and outputs which are coaxial. Applications include automated production-line equipment in home appliances and in vehicles.

Transmitting rotary motion at an angle

Transmission consisting of corrugated metal tube that can bend along its axis can transmit torques in range of 100 to 1000 pound-inches at corner angles as great as 180 deg. Possible uses include submerged mechanisms and food processing machinery where sealed drive line without contaminating lubricants is required.

Two (or more) rotary outputs from one input

Mechanical sequencing device produces cyclic rotations of two outputs from single cyclic rotary input. Device is useful in automatic assemble apparatus, in food-processing machinery, and as controller for sequentially operated valves.

Combined hinge and latch

In door mechanism, hinge and latch are combined in single four-part assembly. Latch eliminates need for protruding hook, and can be modified to lock door in ninety degree position.

Sequencing device utilizing planetary gear set

A planetary (epicyclic) gear set is provided with a reversible rotating input shaft and individual outputs shafts actuated, respectively, by the ring gear and planet gear carrier. Latch means is positioned to selectively and automatically stop the ring gear or carrier member while releasing the other to provide the desired sequential output operation. The output shafts are reversed in sequence and direction of rotation by reversing rotational direction of the input shaft.

Rigid coupling is also flexible

Spring-loaded coupling is rigid under light loads and swivels under higher loads. Break-out point can be set at any desired value by selecting appropriate preload springs. Coupling requires no cushions or elastomeric joints that limit temperature range.

"Nonfloating" universal joint

Modified crowned-spline joint is lightweight, durable, and requires minimum of parts. It does not use rubber cushions to limit play and is useful over wide temperature range. It has inner ball and socket to provide rigid connection with no axial play. Joint can be adapted to form pinned connection between segmented torque tubes.

Load regulating latch

A load regulating mechanical latch is described that has a pivotally mounted latch element having a hook-shaped end with a strike roller-engaging laterally open hook for engaging a stationary strike roller. The latch element or hook is pivotally mounted in a clevis end of an elongated latch stem that is adapted for axial movement through an opening in a support plate or bracket mounted to a structural member. A coil spring is disposed over and around the extending latch stem and the lower end of the coil spring engages the support bracket. A thrust washer is removably attached to the other end of the latch stem and engages the other end of the coil spring and compresses the coil spring thereby preloading the spring and the latch element carried by the latch stem. The hook-shaped latch element has a limited degree of axial travel for loading caused by structural distortion which may change the relative positions of the latch element hook and the strike roller. Means are also provided to permit limited tilt of the latch element due to loading of the hook.

Mechanical sequencer

A mechanical sequencer having a rotatable drive shaft is described. The drive shaft has a spline formed thereon. A freely rotatable shaft contains a plurality of rollers positioned thereon, the axis of the freely rotatable shaft having an axis parallel to and offset from the axis of the drive shaft. A drive fitting has an opening therein, the drive fitting being positioned on the drive shaft spline for rotating the fitting with the shaft. A finger is formed integral with the drive fitting for enabling the fitting to move the rollers and the freely rotatable shift. A crank structure is positioned in a plane in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the drive shaft and the freely rotatable shaft. The crank structure has a drive shaft opening through which the shaft passes. The crank structure further contains a slot into which the freely rotatable shaft and one of the rollers extends for driving the crank structure during movement of the freely rotatable shaft.

Heavy-duty mechanical sequencer

Modular sequential mechanism allows output stroke angle and location of start/stop points to be pre-programmed. Output torques are higher than typical Geneva mechanisms, are constant throughout cycle, and have a moment equal to that of power source.

Load-regulating latch

Device is designed for remotely latched doors or for doors on which latch cannot be reached for adjustment after door is closed. It automatically regulates latch tension load, prevents overload, and load shares in multiple latch system.

Device for use in loading tension members

The indicator is characterized by an elongated elastic body having extended from the opposite ends of threaded shanks adapted to selected tension members. A pair of external shoulders, one of which is axially displaceable relative to the other, and a rigid tubular sleeve interposed between said shoulders are included. Tension is applied to the elastic body for imparting strain. The movable shoulder can be advanced into abutting engagement with the sleeve, whereby the sleeve is placed in compression once the tensile forces are removed from the shanks. A reapplication of tensile forces equal to the initially applied tensile forces removes the sleeve from compression, whereby the sleeve is freed for rotation for thus indicating the magnitude of the applied tensile forces.

Device for measuring tensile forces

This device is characterized by an elongated body having predetermined elastic properties. An applied tensile force of any magnitude, within a given range, imparts to the body an elongation of a predetermined length. The magnitude of applied tensile force is indicated as a function of the angular motion afforded the threaded sleeve mounted on the body.

Variable load indicator

Weighing device measures loads as a function of its elongation. Device is compact, simple, and inexpensive. It does not require presetting and will measure any load from zero to its yield point. Because of its low cost relative to other load indicators such as strain gauges, device can be used as turnbuckle for tensioning straps, rods, or cables where accurate preloading is critical.

Perload indicating turnbuckle

Low cost, easily manufactured turnbuckle was developed for applying a predetermined load on strap assemblies. Unit consists of sleeve and nut assembled on turnbuckle that is pulled to predetermined load in tension test machine.
