Strong Surface-Enhanced Coherent Phonon Generation in van der Waals Materials

Terahertz (THz) coherent phonons have emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of high-speed, low-energy information carriers in atomically thin phononic or phonon-integrated on-chip devices. However, effectively manipulating THz coherent phonons remains a significant challenge. Here, in this study, we investigated THz coherent phonon generation in exfoliated van der Waals (vdW) flakes of Fe 3 GeTe 2 , Fe 5 GeTe 2 , and FePS 3 . We successfully generated the THz A 1g coherent phonon mode in these vdW flakes. An innovative approach involved partially exfoliating vdW flakes on a gold substrate and partially on a silicon (Si) substrate to compare the THz coherent phonon generation between both sides. Interestingly, we observed a significantly enhanced THz coherent phonon in the vdW/gold area compared with that in the vdW/Si area. Frequency-domain Raman mapping across the vdW flakes corroborated these findings. Numerical simulations further indicated a stronger enhanced surface field in vdW/gold structures than in vdW/Si structures. Consequently, we attribute the observed enhancement in THz coherent phonon generation to the increased surface field on the gold substrate. This enhancement was consistent across the three different vdW materials studied, suggesting the universality of this strategy. Our results hold promise for advancing the design of THz phononic and phonon-integrated devices.

Spin–orbit coupling proximity effect in MoS 2 /Fe 3 GeTe 2 heterostructures

Layered two-dimensional (2D) magnet/semiconductor heterostructures combine spintronic and optoelectronic properties of constituent materials, leading to new magneto-optical and magnetoelectric phenomena such as spontaneous emission of helical light and enhanced Zeeman splitting in single photon emission. While prior focus was mostly on the magnetic proximity effect, where properties of 2D magnets are transferred to nonmagnetic 2D materials, the inverse effect of 2D semiconductors altering 2D magnets is much less understood. Here, we fabricated and studied van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of 2D magnet Fe 3 GeTe 2 (FGT) and 2D semiconductor MoS 2 . With reflectance magnetic circular dichroism, we found that the coercive field of MoS 2 -covered FGT reduces compared with uncovered FGT, agreeing well with our first-principles calculations. With its strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC), MoS 2 effectively alters the crystal field of the adjacent FGT and its magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, an unconventional two-step hysteresis loop emerges in MoS 2 /FGT as a result of the superposition of two regions of FGT: at the interface and away from the interface. Our experimental elucidation of the SOC proximity effect that MoS 2 exerts on FGT provides fundamental understanding for the rational development of 2D magnet/semiconductor heterostructures.

Complex magnetic phases in the polar tetragonal intermetallic NdCoGe 3

Polar materials can host a variety of topologically significant magnetic phases, which often emerge from a modulated magnetic ground state. Relatively few noncentrosymmetric tetragonal materials have been shown to host topological spin textures and new candidate materials are necessary to expand the current theoretical models. This manuscript reports on the anisotropic magnetism in the polar, tetragonal material NdCoGe 3 via thermodynamic and neutron diffraction measurements. The previously reported H - T phase diagram is updated to include several additional phases, which exist for both H = 0 and with an applied field H ⊥ c . Neutron diffraction data reveal that the magnetic structures below T N 1 = 3.70 K and T N 2 = 3.50 K are incommensurate, with a ground-state magnetic order that is incommensurate in all directions with the propagation vector $\vec{k}$ = (0.494, 0.0044, 0.385) at 1.8 K. A unique magnetic structure solution is not achievable, but the possible single-$\vec{k}$ and $\vec{k}$ spin models are discussed. These results demonstrate that NdCoGe 3 hosts complicated magnetic order derived from modulated magnetic moments.

Cluster Frustration in the Breathing Pyrochlore Magnet LiGaCr 4 S 8

We present a comprehensive neutron scattering study of the breathing pyrochlore magnet LiGaCr 4 S 8 . We observe an unconventional magnetic excitation spectrum with a separation of high and low-energy spin dynamics in the correlated paramagnetic regime above a spin-freezing transition at 12(2) K. By fitting to magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we parameterize the spin Hamiltonian. We find that interactions are ferromagnetic within the large and small tetrahedra of the breathing pyrochlore lattice, but antiferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions are also essential to explain our data, in qualitative agreement with density-functional theory predictions [Ghosh et al., npj Quantum Mater. 4, 63 (2019)]. We explain the origin of geometrical frustration in LiGaCr 4 S 8 in terms of net antiferromagnetic coupling between emergent tetrahedral spin clusters that occupy a face-centered lattice. Furthermore, our results provide insight into the emergence of frustration in the presence of strong further-neighbor couplings, and a blueprint for the determination of magnetic interactions in classical spin liquids.
