EMT Simulation of Large PV Plant & Power Grid for Disturbance Analysis

One of the challenges faced during the analysis of various disturbances with inverter-based resources is the ability to replicate the same disturbance in simulations. The main issue arises from lack of electromagnetic transient (EMT) models and adequate fidelity of models. To overcome this problem, in this paper, EMT simulation of power grid and one of the affected photovoltaic (PV) plants is performed to replicate the observations during the Angeles Forest disturbance in 2018. The processes to (i) develop the EMT model of the power grid from traditional transient stability (TS) data, and (ii) develop high-fidelity EMT model of PV plant from data collected on a PV plant are described in the paper. The requirements in the high-fidelity EMT model of the PV plant are also described. Finally, simulation of the Angeles Forest disturbance is performed and similar simulation results (as compared to the observed disturbances) are observed.

Hardware-based Advanced Electromagnetic Transient Simulation for A Large-Scale PV Plant in Real Time Digital Simulator

Power electronics-based resources, such as high-voltage direct current (HVdc) substations, photovoltaic (PV) plants, wind plants, electric vehicle charging stations, and energy storage systems, are increasingly being integrated within the power grid. Recently, multiple reports have emphasized the necessity for high-fidelity electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of these large-scale power electronics-based resources to accurately understand their behavior in power grids. However, performing hardware-based EMT simulations with high-fidelity models for such large power electronics systems is challenging due to the small time-step requirements and the involvement of a large number of states. This paper presents the implementation of hardware-based high-fidelity EMT dynamic model of a large-scale PV plant, accomplished through custom model development using the specific-C language in real-time digital simulator hardware (RTDS) and software (RSCAD).

A Comprehensive Method to Mitigate Forced Oscillations in Large Interconnected Power Grids

Multiple severe forced oscillation events have recently been observed across the North American interconnections and around the world. These forced oscillations have caused power swings, limited power transfer capability, damaged equipment, and persisted indefinitely until the driving source was located and removed. This paper proposes a comprehensive method to mitigate forced oscillations. Once a forced oscillation is detected, a new source location algorithm can be used to locate the source based on the oscillation mode angle without requiring system topology information. If the source cannot be quickly located and removed, a control strategy can be activated to modulate the active power of utility-scale inverterbased battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to reduce the energy of forced oscillations to a safe level and allow sufficient time for locating the exact source. The proposed source location algorithm is validated using measurements collected during the January 11, 2019 forced oscillation event in North America and other actual grid events, while the proposed control strategy is verified using the Eastern Interconnection dynamic model under the replicated January 11, 2019 forced oscillation event. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed source location algorithm can accurately identify the forced oscillation source, and the proposed control strategy can significantly reduce forced oscillation energy.
