Roadmap for Optical Metasurfaces

Metasurfaces have recently risen to prominence in optical research, providing unique functionalities that can be used for imaging, beam forming, holography, polarimetry, and many more, while keeping device dimensions small. Despite the fact that a vast range of basic metasurface designs has already been thoroughly studied in the literature, the number of metasurface-related papers is still growing at a rapid pace, as metasurface research is now spreading to adjacent fields, including computational imaging, augmented and virtual reality, automotive, display, biosensing, nonlinear, quantum and topological optics, optical computing, and more. At the same time, the ability of metasurfaces to perform optical functions in much more compact optical systems has triggered strong and constantly growing interest from various industries that greatly benefit from the availability of miniaturized, highly functional, and efficient optical components that can be integrated in optoelectronic systems at low cost. This creates a truly unique opportunity for the field of metasurfaces to make both a scientific and an industrial impact. Furthermore, the goal of this Roadmap is to mark this “golden age” of metasurface research and define future directions to encourage scientists and engineers to drive research and development in the field of metasurfaces toward both scientific excellence and broad industrial adoption.

Compact folded metasurface spectrometer

Compact optical devices such as spectrometers are realized with metasurfaces within a dielectric medium confined by reflective surfaces. The metasurfaces control the phase profiles of the reflected electromagnetic waves within the device. In a compact spectrometer, the metasurfaces within the device separate the electromagnetic waves in different wavelengths. The metasurfaces are designed according to their phase profile by varying the size of the array of scatterers.

Angle multiplexed metasurfaces

A metasurface is defined by an array of scattering elements having a U shape, where the geometrical dimensions determining the U shape are determined according to the different phase profiles that the metasurface is meant to generate in response to an incident electromagnetic wave. The metasurface, therefore, generates different phase shifts as a function of the incident electromagnetic wave.

Dispersionless and dispersion-controlled optical dielectric metasurfaces

Metasurfaces comprise an array of pillars in a lattice. The dimensions of the pillars and the spacing are varied to obtain desired optical properties. The dispersionless metasurfaces can focus optical light over a broad wavelength range. Specific dispersion profiles for the metasurfaces can be designed. Gratings can be fabricated having similar properties as the array of pillars. Pillars in the metasurfaces can have different cross-section profiles.

Tunable elastic dielectric metasurface lenses

Metasurfaces comprise an array of meta-atoms in a stretchable polymer. The dimensions and shapes of the meta-atoms and the spacing are varied to obtain desired optical properties. Any optical wavefront, for different wavelengths, illumination angles, and polarization states can be designed with proper design of the meta-atoms. As the metasurface is stretched, the distance between the meta-atoms changes, modifying the optical response, while the dimensions of the meta-atoms remains constant.

Conformal optical metasurfaces

Structures for scattering light at multiple wavelengths are disclosed. Scattering elements are fabricated with different geometric dimensions and arrangements, to scatter or focus light at the same focal distance for each wavelength, or at different focal distances according to the desired application. The scattering elements fabricated on a substrate can be peeled off with a polymer matrix and attached to a lens to modify the optical properties of the lens.

Compact folded metasurface spectrometer

Abstract An optical design space that can highly benefit from the recent developments in metasurfaces is the folded optics architecture where light is confined between reflective surfaces, and the wavefront is controlled at the reflective interfaces. In this manuscript, we introduce the concept of folded metasurface optics by demonstrating a compact spectrometer made from a 1-mm-thick glass slab with a volume of 7 cubic millimeters. The spectrometer has a resolution of ~1.2 nm, resolving more than 80 spectral points from 760 to 860 nm. The device is composed of three reflective dielectric metasurfaces, all fabricated in a single lithographic step on one side of a substrate, which simultaneously acts as the propagation space for light. The folded metasystem design can be applied to many optical systems, such as optical signal processors, interferometers, hyperspectral imagers, and computational optical systems, significantly reducing their sizes and increasing their mechanical robustness and potential for integration.

Controllable Planar Optical Focusing System

An optical device has a first metasurface. A high-contrast pattern of the first metasurface is operable for modifying, over a first phase profile, a phase front of an incident light beam. A second metasurface, is disposed over a plane parallel to the first metasurface with a second high-contrast pattern and operable for shaping, over a second phase profile, the modified phase front of the incident light beam into a converging spherical phase front. A spacer layer, in which the modified phase front of the incident light beam diffracts, is disposed in a controllably changeable separation between the first and second metasurfaces. Controllably changing the separation between the first and the second metasurfaces by a first distance correspondingly changes the position of the focus point of the converging spherical phase front by a second distance.

On-chip optical filter comprising Fabri-Perot resonator structure and spectrometer

An on-chip optical filter having Fabri-Perot resonators and a spectrometer may include a first sub-wavelength grating (SWG) reflecting layer and a second SWG reflecting layer facing each other. A plurality of Fabri-Perot resonators are formed by the first SWG reflecting layer and the second SWG reflecting layer facing each other. Each of the Fabri-Perot resonators may transmit light corresponding to a resonance wavelength of the Fabri-Perot resonator. The resonance wavelengths of the Fabri-Perot resonators may be determined according to duty cycles of grating patterns.

MEMS-tunable dielectric metasurface lens

Varifocal lenses, conventionally implemented by changing the axial distance between multiple optical elements, have a wide range of applications in imaging and optical beam scanning. The use of conventional bulky refractive elements makes these varifocal lenses large, slow, and limits their tunability. Metasurfaces, a new category of lithographically defined diffractive devices, enable thin and lightweight optical elements with precisely engineered phase profiles. Here we demonstrate tunable metasurface doublets, based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), with more than 60 diopters (about 4%) change in the optical power upon a 1-μm movement of one metasurface, and a scanning frequency that can potentially reach a few kHz. They can also be integrated with a third metasurface to make compact microscopes (~1 mm thick) with a large corrected field of view (~500 μm or 40 degrees) and fast axial scanning for 3D imaging. This paves the way towards MEMS-integrated metasurfaces as a platform for tunable and reconfigurable optics.
