A note on a broken layer in an orthotropic laminate composite

An orthotropic laminate composite containing a completely broken layer is considered. The problem is formulated in terms of integral transforms and then reduced to a singular integral equation which is solved numerically. The strength of stress singularity at the crack tip is determined from a characteristic equation which is obtained by studying the dominant part of the singular integral equation near the end points. The stress intensity factors are given for various material properties.

An orthotropic laminate composite containing a layer with a crack

A laminate composite containing an orthotropic layer with a crack situated normal to the interfaces, and bonded to two orthotropic half-planes of dissimilar materials, is considered. The solutions for two different classes of orthotropic materials are presented separately. In each case, the problem is first reduced to a system of dual integral equations, then to a singular integral equation which is subsequently solved numerically for the stress intensity factors at the tip of the crack. The effect of the material properties on the stress intensity factor is investigated. Two cases, the generalized plane stress and the plane strain, are treated simultaneously.

The stress distribution in tempered glass due to a crack

A model describing the failure in tempered glass is proposed and a method of solution is presented. An infinite elastic strip is assumed to represent the glass and the loads vanish everywhere on the boundary as well as at infinity. The problem is solved using the integral equations technique where the input is the residual stresses in the glass.

Several intact or broken stringers attached to an orthotropic sheet with a crack

Several intact or broken stringers which are continuously attached to a cracked orthotropic sheet through an adhesive are considered. The effect of orthotropy on the stress intensity factors is investigated. The stringers are assumed to be partially debonded due to high stress concentrations. The shear stress distribution between the stringers and the plate and the stress intensity factors are obtained from an integral equation which represents the continuity of displacements along the bond lines.

Effect of friction in wedging of elastic solids

In this paper the contact problem for an elastic wedge of arbitrary angle is considered. It is assumed that the external load is applied to the medium through a rigid wedge and the coefficient of friction between the loading wedge and the elastic solid is constant. The problem is reduced to a singular integral equation of the second kind with the contact pressure as the unknown function. An effective numerical solution of the integral equation is described and the results of three examples are presented. The comparison of these results with those obtained from the frictionless wedge problem indicates that generally friction has the tendency of reducing the peak values of the stress intensity factors calculated at the wedge apex and at the end points of the contact area.

A metal sheet stiffened by a partially debonded composite quarter-plate

An isotropic sheet stiffened by means of an orthotropic quarter-plate is considered. The quarter-plate is assumed to be perfectly bonded to the metal sheet everywhere except an area of debonding which may develop due to high stress concentrations. The adhesive which has a small constant thickness is treated as a shear spring. The loads are applied at infinity and supposed to be transmitted through the metal plate. Shear stress distribution between the two plates was obtained from the continuity of displacements along an area where they were bonded to each other.

Fracture and contact problems for an elastic wedge

The paper deals with the plane elastostatic contact problem for an infinite elastic wedge of arbitrary angle. The medium is loaded through a frictionless rigid wedge of a given symmetric profile. Using the Mellin transform formulation the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a singular integral equation with the contact stress as the unknown function. With the application of the results to the fracture of the medium in mind, the main emphasis in the study has been on the investigation of the singular nature of the stress state around the apex of the wedge and on the determination of the contact pressure.

The effect of several intact or broken stringers of the stress intensity factor in a cracked sheet

The stringers which are continuously attached to the plate and placed perpendicular to the crack may be partially debonded due to high stress concentrations. Since the stringers may even break under excessive loading conditions, both intact and broken stringers are considered to investigate the effect of rupture. The continuity of displacements along the bond lines leads to an integral equation which is solved to give the shear stress distribution in the adhesive and the stress intensity factors at the crack tips.

The effect of several stringers on the stress intensity factors at the tips of a crack is considered. A half plane and a strip with an arbitrarily located crack

The paper introduces a technique to deal with the problem of an elastic domain containing an arbitrarily oriented internal crack. The problem is formulated as a system of integral equations for a fictitious layer of body forces imbedded in the plane along a closed smooth curve encircling the original domain. The problems of a half plane with a crack in the neighborhood of its free boundary and of an infinite strip containing a symmetrically located internal crack with an arbitrary orientation are considered as examples. In each case the stress intensity factors are computed and are given as functions of the crack angle.

A note on the effect of lateral bending stiffness of stringers attached to a plate with a crack

An infinite stringer which is assumed to be partially bonded to a plate through a layer of adhesive is considered. The stringer is assumed to have bending as well as longitudinal stiffness. The effect of the stringer's bending rigidity on the stress intensity factor at the tip of the crack is illustrated. Shear stress distribution between the plate and the stringer and the stress intensity factors will be obtained from the solution of a system of Fredholm integral equations which represent the continuity of displacements along the line of bond.

A plate with a crack, stiffened by a partially debonded stringer

The effect of a partially debonded infinite stringer on the stress intensity factor at the crack tip is investigated. It is assumed that the stringer is bonded to an isotropic plate through an adhesive, along a line perpendicular to the crack. Due to the high stress concentration around the crack tip and on the adhesive, partial debonding is assumed to develop between the stringer and the plate. The integral equation, obtained from the continuity of displacements along the line where the stringer and the plate are bonded, is solved numerically to give the shear stress distribution between the plate and the stringer and the stress intensity factors at both crack tips.

A sandwich plate with a part-through and a debonding crack.

The stress analysis of a metal base plate stiffened by a fiber-reinforced composite layer is considered. It is assumed that the two materials are bonded through an adhesive of constant thickness which is treated as a two-dimensional shear spring in the analysis. The metal plate is assumed to contain a through crack of finite length. The composite plate has no flaws. However, due to the high stress concentration around the crack and on the interface, a debonding crack is assumed to exist, encircling the crack in the base plate. The problem is reduced to a pair of integral equations of the second kind with Fredholm-type kernels. By solving these equations the stress intensity factor in the base plate, the boundary of the debonding crack, and the interface shear stresses acting on the adhesive are calculated.
