Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) report to the GHRSST Science Team

In 2017-2018 the Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) at NASA’s Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) provided ingest, archive, distribution and user services for GHRSST operational data streams with improved and evolved tools, services, and tutorials and interfaced with the user community to address technical inquiries. The GDAC provided access to new GHRSST datasets as well retired a significant number of deprecated GHRSST datasets from its discovery services. The following sections summarize and document the specific achievements of the GDAC to the GHRSST community.

NASA (RDAC) Report to the GHRSST Science Team

The NASA JPL and JPL_OUROCEAN RDACs continued their scientific contributions to GHRSST community for providing valuable GHRSST Level-2 and Level-4 products, of which the MUR and Terra MODIS L2P have been listed at the top 10 most active GHRSST data in 2018 (See GDAC Report in these proceedings). The JPL RDAC has continually produced the MODIS Aqua/Terra L2P, VIIRS L2P and MUR L4 datasets, while JPL_OUROCEAN RDAC has produced and supported the G1SST L4 dataset. The report will also discuss NASA contributions to the COVERAGE project and the US GHRSST community in general.

Managing and Servicing Physical Oceanographic Data at a NASA Distributed Active Archive Center

The NASA Earth Science Data Information Systems Project funds and operates 12 Distributed Active Archive Center(s) (DAAC) throughout the United States. Of these 12 centers, the Physical Oceanography DAAC (PO.DAAC) is committed to providing long term archival, distribution and stewardship for NASA physical oceanographic data, primarily derived from space-born satellite systems, but also including a growing set of recent and future in situ observations from the SPURS-1 and SPURS-2 campaigns. Notable NASA missions supported include: Seasat, TOPEX/Poseidon, NSCAT, QuikSCAT, ISS-RapidScat, Jason-1, Jason-2/OSTM, GRACE, Aquarius, GHRSST, and MODIS. The following interagency and international missions are also supported by PO.DAAC: AVHRR, Coriolis, DMSP, MetOp-A, MetOp-B, Oceansat-2. The PO.DAAC currently holds 525 datasets in public distribution, spanning the following observational parameters: sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, ocean color, ocean surface currents, ocean surface wind speed, ocean surface wind direction, sea surface height, significant wave height, ocean water mass/thickness, and sea ice age. A hundred of these datasets are available in near-real-time. Datasets are distributed through a variety of open-source access protocols including FTP, OPeNDAP, and THREDDS. FTP will soon be phased out in favor of a recently introduced HTTPS PO.DAAC Drive interface that supports WebDAV and interoperable machine-to-machine communication. OPeNDAP supports remote data/metadata query, subset, and download. THREDDS provides the features of OPeNDAP with the additional feature of temporal aggregation. PO.DAAC also offers proprietary tools and services to further enhance the data discovery, visualization and analysis experience, including but not limited to: State of the Ocean, Web Services (data/metadata discovery and extraction), HiTIDE Level-2 subsetter, Live Access Server (LAS), Webification (w10nsci), and Rich Site Summary (RSS) Datacasting. To assist with provenance of datasets, PO.DAAC has implemented DOIs for the data it distributes so that they can be properly cited. There is a user forum and helpdesk that contains data recipes and via which users can get guidance. In summary, this presentation aims to provide a general overview of PO.DAAC’s web portal and data holdings along with a set of illustrative examples leading prospective data users into the practical utility of its tools and services.

Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) Report to the GHRSST Science Team

In 2012-2013 the Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) at NASA's Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) continued its role as the primary clearinghouse and access node for operational GHRSST data streams, as well as its collaborative role with the NOAA Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility (LTSRF) for archiving. Our presentation reported on our data management activities and infrastructure improvements since the last science team meeting in 2012.

GHRSST-14 DAS-TAG Report

The DAS-TAG provides the informatics and data management expertise in emerging information technologies for the GHRSST community. It provides expertise in data and metadata formats and standards, fosters improvements for GHRSST data curation, experiments with new data processing paradigms, and evaluates services and tools for data usage. It provides a forum for producer and distributor data management issues and coordination.

Dataset Lifecycle Policy

The presentation focused on describing a new dataset lifecycle policy that the NASA Physical Oceanography DAAC (PO.DAAC) has implemented for its new and current datasets to foster improved stewardship and consistency across its archive. The overarching goal is to implement this dataset lifecycle policy for all new GHRSST GDS2 datasets and bridge the mission statements from the GHRSST Project Office and PO.DAAC to provide the best quality SST data in a cost-effective, efficient manner, preserving its integrity so that it will be available and usable to a wide audience.

Master Metadata Repository and Metadata-Management System

A master metadata repository (MMR) software system manages the storage and searching of metadata pertaining to data from national and international satellite sources of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Pilot Project [GHRSSTPP]. These sources produce a total of hundreds of data files daily, each file classified as one of more than ten data products representing global sea-surface temperatures. The MMR is a relational database wherein the metadata are divided into granulelevel records [denoted file records (FRs)] for individual satellite files and collection-level records [denoted data set descriptions (DSDs)] that describe metadata common to all the files from a specific data product. FRs and DSDs adhere to the NASA Directory Interchange Format (DIF). The FRs and DSDs are contained in separate subdatabases linked by a common field. The MMR is configured in MySQL database software with custom Practical Extraction and Reporting Language (PERL) programs to validate and ingest the metadata records. The database contents are converted into the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standard format by use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML). A Web interface enables users to search for availability of data from all sources.
