Adapting an Electron Microscopy Microheater for Correlated and Time-Resolved Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) can follow structural and chemical changes in nanomaterials under reaction conditions, including at temperatures up to 1300 °C and pressures up to ~20 mbar. However, ETEM studies are limited to localized areas of a sample and can benefit from correlative studies of a similar sample on larger length scales. Here, in this work, we describe the customization of a commercial microheater holder used in ETEM to anode-based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), where chemical and electronic structure information is averaged over several hundred square micrometers. To benchmark heating capabilities in the APXPS instrument, core level binding energies were followed during surface chemical reactions of a Pd film, including CO adsorption–desorption, Pd oxidation, and PdO reduction. The fast heating feature of the microheaters advanced XPS experimental capabilities, including the collection of subsecond time-resolved spectra of the Pd 3d 5/2 peak during the reduction of an oxidized Pd film. The potential to use these heaters in a closed gas cell was also demonstrated by oxidizing Pd in a partial pressure of air locally dosed to the sample surface. General tips and considerations for the application of commercial ETEM heaters to any XPS system with a focused X-ray beam are discussed.

Deciphering phase evolution in complex metal oxide thin films via high-throughput materials synthesis and characterization

Discovery of structure-property relationships in thin film alloys of complex metal oxides enabled by high-throughput materials synthesis and characterization facilities is demonstrated here with a case-study. In this study, thin films of binary transition metal oxides (Ti–Zn) are prepared by pulsed laser deposition with continuously varying Ti:Zn ratio, creating combinatorial samples for exploration of the properties of this material family. The atomic structure and electronic properties are probed by spatially resolved techniques including x-ray absorption near edge structures (XANES) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) at the Ti and Zn K-edge, x-ray diffraction, and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The observed properties as a function of Ti:Zn ratio are resolved into mixtures of five distinguishable phases by deploying multivariate curve resolution analysis on the XANES spectral series, under constraints set by results from the other characterization techniques. First-principles computations based on density function theory connect the observed properties of each distinct phase with structural and spectral characteristics of crystalline polymorphs of Ti–Zn oxide. Continuous tuning of the optical absorption edge as a function of Ti:Zn ratio, including the unusual observation of negative optical bowing, exemplifies a functional property of the film correlated to the phase evolution.

Enhanced superconductivity and electron correlations in intercalated ZrTe 3

We report charge density waves (CDWs) with superconductivity, competing Fermi surface instabilities, and collective orders have captured much interest in two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials. Understanding the CDW suppression mechanism, its connection to the emerging superconducting state, and electronic correlations provides opportunities for engineering the electronic properties of vdW heterostructures and thin-film devices. Using a combination of the thermal transport, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, Raman measurements, and first-principles calculations, we observe an increase in electronic correlations of the conducting states as the CDW is suppressed in ZrT e3 with 5% Cu and Ni intercalation in the vdW gap. As superconductivity emerges, intercalation brings not only decoupling of quasi-one-dimensional conduction electrons with phonons as a consequence of intercalation-induced lattice expansion but also a drastic increase in Zr 2+ at the expense of Zr 4+ metal atoms. These observations not only demonstrate the potential of atomic intercalates in the vdW gap for ground-state tuning but also illustrate the crucial role of the Zr metal valence in the formation of collective electronic orders.

Giant Thermoelectric Power Factor Anisotropy in PtSb 1.4 Sn 0.6

In this work, we report on the giant anisotropy found in the thermoelectric power factor (S 2 σ) of marcasite structure-type PtSb 1.4 Sn 0.6 single crystal. PtSb 1.4 Sn 0.6 , synthesized using an ambient pressure flux growth method upon mixing Sb and Sn on the same atomic site, is a new phase different from both PtSb 2 and PtSn 2 , which crystallize in the cubic Pa$\bar{3}$ pyrite and Fm$\bar{3}$m fluorite unit cell symmetry, respectively. The large difference in S 2 σ for heat flow applied along different principal directions of the orthorhombic unit cell stems mostly from anisotropic Seebeck coefficients.

Short-Range Crystalline Order-Tuned Conductivity in Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 van der Waals Magnetic Crystals

Two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMMs) are significant not only for studies on the nature of 2D long-range magnetic order but also for future spintronic devices. Of particular interest are 2DMMs where spins can be manipulated by electrical conduction. Whereas Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits magnetic order in few-layer crystals, its large band gap inhibits electronic conduction. Here we show that the defect-induced short-range crystal order in Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , on the length scale below 0.6 nm, induces a substantially reduced band gap and robust semiconducting behavior down to 2 K that turns to metallic above 10 GPa. Our results in this work will be helpful in designing conducting states in 2DMMs and call for spin-resolved measurement of the electronic structure in exfoliated ultrathin crystals.

Suppression of Superconductivity and Nematic Order in Fe 1–y Se 1–x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1; y ≤ 0.1) Crystals by Anion Height Disorder

Connections between crystal chemistry and critical temperature T c have been in the focus of superconductivity, one of the most widely studied phenomena in physics, chemistry and materials science alike. In most Fe-based superconductors materials chemistry and physics conspire so that T c correlates with the average anion height above the Fe plane, i.e. with the geometry of the FeAs 4 or FeCh 4 (Ch = Te, Se, S) tetrahedron. Here, by synthesizing Fe 1-y Se 1-x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, y ≤ 0.1) we find that in alloyed crystals T c is not correlated with the anion height as most other Fe superconductors. Instead, changes in T c (x) and tetragonal-to-orthorombic (nematic) transition T s (x) on cooling are correlated with disorder in Fe vibrations in direction orthogonal to Fe planes, along the crystallographic c-axis. The disorder stems from the random nature of S substitution, causing deformed Fe(Se,S) 4 tetrahedra with different Fe-Se and Fe-S bond distances. Our results provide evidence of T c and T s suppression by disorder in anion height. The connection to local crystal chemistry may be exploited in computational prediction of new superconducting materials with FeSe/S building blocks.

The Inner Shell Spectroscopy beamline at NSLS-II: a facility for in situ and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy for materials research

The Inner Shell Spectroscopy (ISS) beamline on the 8-ID station at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), Upton, NY, USA, is a high-throughput X-ray absorption spectroscopy beamline designed for in situ, operando, and time-resolved material characterization using high monochromatic flux and scanning speed. This contribution discusses the technical specifications of the beamline in terms of optics, heat load management, monochromator motion control, and data acquisition and processing. Results of the beamline tests demonstrating the quality of the data obtainable on the instrument, possible energy scanning speeds, as well as long-term beamline stability are shown. The ability to directly control the monochromator trajectory to define the acquisition time for each spectral region is highlighted. Examples of studies performed on the beamline are presented. The paper is concluded with a brief outlook for future developments.

Polaronic Conductivity in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 Single Crystals

We report that intrinsic 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors are an important class of materials for spin-charge conversion applications. Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 retains long-range magnetic order in the bilayer at cryogenic temperatures and shows complex magnetic interactions with considerable magnetic anisotropy. Here, a series of structural, magnetic, X-ray scattering, electronic, thermal transport and first-principles calculation studies are performed, which reveal that localized electronic charge carriers in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 are dressed by the surrounding lattice and are involved in polaronic transport via hopping that is observed via magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This opens the possibility for manipulation of charge transport in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 —based devices by electron–phonon- and spin–orbit coupling-based tailoring of polaron properties.

X-ray Transient Absorption Studies of Exciton Self-Trapping

Here, we present optical pump/X-ray absorption probe studies to probe changes in electronic distribution and local structure upon formation of a self-trapped exciton. The experiments were carried out on the mixed-valence halide-bridged transition metal linear chain charge density wave material [Pt(en 2 )][Pt(en 2 )Cl 2 ]·(ClO 4 ) 4 . Photoinduced changes in the Pt L III XANES spectrum were measured on a picosecond time scale following generation of excitons via optical excitation of the intervalence charge transfer transition. Ab initio FEFF9 modeling of the spectra and the associated angular momentum projected density of states was used to interpret the response. We find photoinduced changes reflecting electronic redistribution and local lattice distortions that correspond to strong localization of the self-trapped state.

X-ray multi-probe data acquisition: A novel technique for laser pump x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

We report the development and implementation of a novel data acquisition (DAQ) technique for synchrotron-based laser pump X-ray Transient Absorption (XTA) spectroscopy, called X-ray Multi-Probe DAQ (XMP DAQ). This technique utilizes high performance analog to digital converters and home-built software to efficiently measure and process the XTA signal from all x-ray pulses between laser excitations. XMP DAQ generates a set of time resolved x-ray absorption spectra at thousands of different pump–probe time delays simultaneously. Two distinct XMP DAQ schemes are deployed to accommodate different synchrotron storage ring filling patterns. Current Integration (CI) DAQ is a quasi-analog technique that implements a fitting procedure to extract the time resolved absorption intensity from the averaged fluorescence detector response. The fitting procedure eliminates issues associated with small drifts in the voltage baseline and greatly enhances the accuracy of the technique. Photon Counting (PC) DAQ is a binary technique that uses a time resolved histogram to calculate the XTA spectrum. While PC DAQ is suited to measure XTA data with closely spaced x-ray pulses (~10 ns) and a low count rate (<1 detected photon/pulse), CI DAQ works best for widely spaced pulses (tens of ns or greater) with a high count rate (>1 detected photon/pulse). XMP DAQ produces a two-dimensional XTA dataset, enabling efficient quantitative analysis of photophysical and photochemical processes from the sub-nanosecond timescale to 100 μs and longer.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

Three-dimensional ferromagnetism and magnetotransport in van der Waals Mn-intercalated tantalum disufide

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets are an important class of materials for spintronics applications. The recent discovery of atomically vdW magnets CrI 3 and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 has triggered a renaissance in the area of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Herein we systematically studied 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 single crystal, a 2D vdW ferromagnet with T c ~ 82.3K, and a large in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy was measured to provide information on its electronic state and local atomic environment. The detailed magnetic isotherms measured in the vicinity of T c indicates that the spin coupling inside 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 is of a 3D Heisenberg type coupled with the attractive long-range interaction between spins that decay as J(r) ≈ r –4.85 . Both resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) exhibit anomalies near T c , confirming that the hole-type transport carriers strongly interact with local moments. Furthermore, an unusual angle-dependent magnetoresistance is further observed, suggesting a possible field-induced novel magnetic structure.

Resolving the Evolution of Atomic Layer-Deposited Thin-Film Growth by Continuous In Situ X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

In situ synchrotron X-ray absorption near-edge structure characterization of thin-film titania growth by atomic layer deposition (ALD) over ZnO nanowires reveals persistent low-coordinated Ti motifs leading to a new picture of ALD growth. Through the design of growth and measurement cycles, Ti K-edge spectral data are continuously recorded so as to characterize the film evolution as a function of ALD cycle number and the surface changes within the time scale of the ALD cycle. A unified set of analysis tools is developed to interpret the time-series of spectral data. A prenucleation stage of growth, a transition region, and then a steady-state growth stage are observed with distinguishable features. Multivariate curve resolution analysis, that is physically constrained, demonstrates two specific spectral components with associated, time-dependent concentrations. The bulk-film component tracks the stages of growth. The surface and interface components, present throughout the stages of growth, reveal a significant coverage of relatively isolated or loosely networked tetrahedrally coordinated Ti atomic motifs. Lastly, spectral signatures for the intra-cycle growth kinetics are reconstructed at a time resolution of ~1 s and demonstrate that the transient Ti motifs on the growing surface stabilize within a few seconds of the Ti precursor pulse.

Three-dimensional Ising ferrimagnetism of Cr-Fe-Cr trimers in FeCr2Te4

We carried out a comprehensive study of magnetic critical behavior in single crystals of ternary chalcogenide Fe Cr 2 Te 4 that undergoes a ferrimagnetic transition below T c ~ 123 K. Detailed critical behavior analysis and scaled magnetic entropy change indicate a second-order ferrimagnetic transition. Critical exponents β = 0.30 ( 1 ) with T c = 122.4 ( 5 ) K , γ = 1.22 ( 1 ) with T c = 122.8 ( 1 ) K , and δ = 4.24 ( 2 ) at T c ~ 123 K suggest that the spins approach the three-dimensional Ising ( β = 0.325 , γ = 1.24 , and δ = 4.82 ) model coupled with attractive long-range interactions between spins that decay as J ( r ) ≈ r - 4.88 . Our results suggest that the ferrimagnetism in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 is due to itinerant ferromagnetism among the antiferromagnetically coupled Cr-Fe-Cr trimers.
