Erratum: Centrality-Dependent Modification of Jet-Production Rates in Deuteron-Gold Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁒𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 122301 (2016)]

We previously reported jet-production rates in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and 𝑑 + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁒𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV recorded in 2008 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Subsequently, we found that electronic noise in the electromagnetic calorimeter was not completely removed by the tower-timing cuts used in the analysis. We have conducted an independent re-analysis of the data that eliminated noisy towers by removing them completely from the analysis. These cuts remove any contributions from instrumental noise, but reduce the overall acceptance for electromagnetic clusters by β‰ˆ16% and hence the overall statistical power of the data. Finally, this re-analysis found that instrumental noise in the electromagnetic calorimeter led to an artificial increase in the jet yield for both the 𝑝 + 𝑝 and 𝑑 + Au collisions.

Jet modification via πœ‹ 0 -hadron correlations in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4–12 GeV/𝑐 and 0.5–7 GeV/𝑐, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au + Au collisions and 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions, 𝐼 𝐴⁒𝐴 and Ξ” 𝐴⁒𝐴 , as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, Ξ”β’πœ™, are measured for the first time at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Finally, these results better quantify how the yield of low-𝑝 𝑇 associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

Identified charged-hadron production in 𝑝+Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron (πœ‹ Β± , 𝐾 Β± , 𝑝, $\bar{𝑝}$) production at midrapidity in 𝑝 + Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) and transverse-mass (π‘š 𝑇 ) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of 𝐾/πœ‹ and 𝑝/πœ‹ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu + Au and U + U) and small (𝑝 + Al and 3 He + Au) collision systems. The values of 𝐾/πœ‹ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in 𝑝+𝑝 collisions. However, the values of 𝑝/πœ‹ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of β‰ˆ0.6, which is a factor of β‰ˆ2 larger than in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (𝑅 𝐴⁒𝐡 ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton 𝑅 𝐴⁒𝐡 values over meson 𝑅 𝐴⁒𝐡 values was observed in central 3 He + Au, Cu + Au, and U + U collisions. Finally, the proton 𝑅 𝐴⁒𝐡 values measured in the 𝑝 + Al collision system were found to be consistent with 𝑅 𝐴⁒𝐡 values of πœ™, πœ‹ Β± , 𝐾 Β± , and πœ‹ 0 mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in 𝑝 + Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Erratum: LΓ©vy-stable two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in s N N = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions [Phys. Rev. C 97 , 064911 (2018)]

We previously published in 2018 a detailed measurement recorded in 2010 for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{^SNN}$ = 200 GeV of charged two-pion correlation functions in 0%-30% centrality. We found the data to be well described by Bose-Einstein correlation functions stemming from L$\acute{e}$vy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extracted the correlation strength parameter Ξ», the L$\acute{e}$vy index of stability Ξ± and the L$\acute{e}$vy length scale parameter R as a function of average transverse mass of the pair m T .

Performance of the ALICE Electromagnetic Calorimeter

The performance of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the ALICE experiment during operation in 2010–2018 at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. After a short introduction into the design, readout, and trigger capabilities of the detector, the procedures for data taking, reconstruction, and validation are explained. The methods used for the calibration and various derived corrections are presented in detail. Subsequently, the capabilities of the calorimeter to reconstruct and measure photons, light mesons, electrons and jets are discussed. The performance of the calorimeter is illustrated mainly with data obtained with test beams at the Proton Synchrotron and Super Proton Synchrotron or in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, and compared to simulations.

Low-$p_T$ direct-photon production in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 62.4 GeV

Here, the measurement of direct photons from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 62.4 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.4 < $p_T$ < 3 Gev/c is presented by the PHENIX collaboration at the BNLRelativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant direct-photon yield is observed in both collision systems. A universal scaling is observed when the direct-photon $p_T$ spectra for different center-of-mass energies and for different centrality selections at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 62.4 GeV is scaled with $(dN_{\text{ch}}/dΞ·)^Ξ±$ for Ξ± = 1.21 Β± 0.04. This scaling also holds true for direct-photon spectra from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV measured earlier by PHENIX, as well as the spectra from Pb + Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2760 GeV published by ALICE. The scaling power Ξ± seems to be independent of $p_T$, center of mass energy, and collision centrality. The spectra from different collision energies have a similar shape up to $p_T$ of 2 Gev/c. The spectra have a local inverse slope $T_{\text{eff}}$ increasing with $p_T$ of 0.174 Β± 0.018 Gev/c in the range 0.4 < $p_T$ < 1.3 Gev/c and increasing to 0.289 Β± 0.024 Gev/c for 0.9 < $p_T$ < 2.1 Gev/c. The observed similarity of low-$p_T$ direct-photon production from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 to 2760 GeV suggests a common source of direct photons for the different collision energies and event centrality selections, and suggests a comparable space-time evolution of direct-photon emission.

Measurement of Ο†-meson production in Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of Ο†-meson production in asymmetric Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the Ο† β†’ K + K – decay channel at midrapidity |Ξ·| < 0.35. Features of Ο†- meson production measured in Cu + Cu, Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the Ο† meson in Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$ , Ο†-meson production measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. Finally, the elliptic flow for Ο† mesons measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is well described by a (2+1)-dimensional viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity Ξ·/s = 1/4Ο€.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in p + Al , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV using Ο€ 0 production

The PHENIX Collaboration presents a systematic study of inclusive Ο€ 0 production from p + p , p + Al , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0–100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0–100% collisions, the nuclear-modification factors, R x A , are consistent with unity for p T above 8 GeV / c , but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high- p T - Ο€ 0 production, the nucleons in the d and He 3 interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counterintuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower p T resemble the Cronin effectβ€”an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as p + Au > d + Au > He 3 + Au > p + Al . For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial-state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower p T .

Production of $Ο€^0$ and $\eta$ mesons in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $Ο€^0$ and $\eta$ mesons at midrapidity in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $Ο€^0(Ξ·) β†’ Ξ³Ξ³$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $Ο€^0$ and $\eta$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions relative to binary scaled p + p results. Yields of $Ο€^0$ and $\eta$ mesons measured in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions show similar suppression pattern to those measured in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 200$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $Ξ·/Ο€^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Production of b b Β― at forward rapidity in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ( b b Β― ) production in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ( 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 ). The b b Β― signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral B meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of d Οƒ b b Β― β†’ ΞΌ Β± ΞΌ Β± / d y = 0.16 Β± 0.01 ( stat ) Β± 0.02 ( syst ) Β± 0.02 ( global ) nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and p T ranges 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 and p T > 1 GeV / c , and dimuon mass of 5 – 10 GeV / c 2 . The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for b b Β― production is 13.1 Β± 0.6 ( stat ) Β± 1.5 ( syst ) Β± 2.7 ( global ) ΞΌ b . The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from b b Β― decays and their p T distributions are compared to distributions generated using ps pythia 6, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair p T distribution are not very well described by pythia calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.
