Tungsten-reinforced tantalum

Method is described for producing tungsten-reinforced tantalum, a material possessing the high temperature strength of tungsten and room temperature ductility and weldability of tantalum. This material is produced by bonding together and overlaying structure of tungsten wires with chemical vapor deposited tantalum.

Fabrication and evaluation of chemically vapor deposited tungsten heat pipe.

A network of lithium-filled tungsten heat pipes is being considered as a method of heat extraction from high temperature nuclear reactors. The need for material purity and shape versatility in these applications dictates the use of chemically vapor deposited (CVD) tungsten. Adaptability of CVD tungsten to complex heat pipe designs is shown. Deposition and welding techniques are described. Operation of two lithium-filled CVD tungsten heat pipes above 1800 K is discussed.

Fabrication and testing of tungsten heat pipes for heat pipe cooled reactors.

The choice of chemically vapor deposited (CVD) tungsten as material for the heat pipes is based on studies reported by Busse et al. (1970). Aspects of pipe construction are discussed together with wick construction, and heat pipe operation. An auxiliary heater was used to overcome problems during the start of operation in the case of a thermally loaded pipe. Two heat pipes were operated at temperatures up to 1850 K. Annular and channeled wicks were investigated. The design of a cross flow heat exchanger is presented together with the design of a reactor heat pipe life test station.
