The pNab experiment and the quest for ever better neutron beam polarization

The Nab and pNAB collaborations are conducting a program of studies of free neutron beta decay, with the primary goal of testing the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix that describes quark mixing due to the weak interaction. For this purpose, a large, novel electromagnetic spectrometer, the Nab spectrometer, has been designed, built, and placed in use to determine the correlation coefficients in unpolarized neutron beta decay: "a", the neutrino-electron correlation coefficient; and "b", the Fierz term. The subject of this paper is pNAB, the second phase of the program, that will deploy the same spectrometer with a polarized neutron beam to determine "A", the beta asymmetry; and "B", the neutrino asymmetry coefficients. A focus of this paper will be on the strategies to provide a high and precisely known neutron beam polarization.

Study of neutron beta decay with the Nab experiment

The current three sigma tension in the unitarity test of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix is a notable problem with the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. A long-standing goal of the study of free neutron beta decay is to better determine the CKM element Vud through measurements of the neutron lifetime and a decay correlation parameter. The Nab collaboration intends to measure a, the neutrino-electron correlation, with accuracy sufficient for a competitive evaluation of Vud based on neutron decay data alone. This paper gives a status report and an outlook.

First Precision Measurement of the Parity Violating Asymmetry in Cold Neutron Capture on 3 He

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton momentum with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction 3 He(n,p) 3 H, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active 3 He target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the least well-understood aspects of electroweak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory and potential model calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is A PV =[1.55Β±0.97(stat)Β±0.24(sys)]Γ—10 -8 , which has the smallest uncertainty of any hadronic parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

Improved determination of the π›½βˆ’β€Ύβ€Ύπœˆπ‘’ angular correlation coefficient π‘Ž in free neutron decay with the π‘Žβ’SPECT spectrometer

We report on a precise measurement of the electron-antineutrino angular correlation (π‘Ž coefficient) in free neutron beta decay from the π‘Žβ’SPECT experiment. The π‘Ž coefficient is inferred from the recoil energy spectrum of the protons which are detected in 4β’πœ‹ by the π‘Žβ’SPECT spectrometer using magnetic adiabatic collimation with an electrostatic filter. Data are presented from a 100-day run at the Institut Laue Langevin in 2013. The sources of systematic errors are considered and included in the final result. We obtain π‘Ž=βˆ’0.10430⁒(84) which is the most precise measurement of the neutron π‘Ž coefficient to date. From this, the ratio of axial vector to vector coupling constants is derived giving |πœ†|=1.2677⁒(28).
