Integrated Synchronization Control of Grid-Forming Inverters for Smooth Microgrid Transition

This paper develops an integrated synchronization control technique for a grid-forming inverter operating within a microgrid that can improve the microgrid's transients during microgrid transition operation. This integrated synchronization control includes the disconnection synchronization control and the reconnection synchronization control. The simulation results show that the developed synchronization control works effectively to smooth the angle change of the grid-forming inverter during microgrid transition operation. Thus, the microgrid's transients are significantly improved compared to the case without synchronization control.

Performance Evaluation of Distributed Energy Resources Management System via Advanced Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation: Preprint

This paper presents an advanced hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform to evaluate the performance of voltage regulation coordinated across advanced distribution management systems (ADMS), distributed energy management system (DERMS), and DERs. The HIL platform provides realistic laboratory testing, including accurate modeling of the real-world distribution system from a utility partner, real controller (ADMS and DERMs) and power (DERs) hardware, and standard communications protocols. The test results show proper functionalities of the integrated platform and performance of the peak load management of coordinated control systems. Based on the laboratory testing, the utility can set up the same grid automation system to manage DERs to achieve system-level control and operation objectives (e.g., peak load management), thus derisking potential issues (e.g., instability) for field deployment.

NREL's Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) Test Bed

NREL's advanced distribution management system (ADMS) test bed is a vendor-neutral resource for evaluating existing and future ADMS functionalities in a realistic laboratory setting. The test bed uses Opal-RT's ePHASORsim and eMEGAsim products interfaced with an OpenDSS power system simulation through the HELICS cosimulation platform developed by multiple DOE laboratories; and with power and controller hardware. NREL will present an overview of the test bed and the technologies included within it, and also some examples of how the test bed has been used to address industry challenges.

Considerations for AMI-Based Operations for Distribution Feeders

More than $5 billion in investments in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technologies, AMI deployments, as pervasive secondary network voltage monitoring systems, provide opportunities for utility operations and controls. This paper focuses on the considerations for AMI-based tools and techniques as the industry moves toward operationalizing such large data sets. Phase identification is a first such tool. Numerous distribution network analysis, monitoring, and control applications - including volt/volt-ampere reactive control, state estimation, and distribution automation - require accurate phase connectivity information in the system models. The phase connectivity database maintained by utilities is inaccurate because of a significant amount of missing data, restoration activities, and network reconfiguration. Existing phase identification techniques that estimate phase connectivity work well in distribution feeders that have low or no photovoltaic (PV) generation; however, they fail to identify the phases accurately when considerable PV generation is present. This work addresses the phase identification problem in the presence of high PV generation using statistical analysis methods. Further, insights into the AMI data requirements for this application in terms of data window length and resolution are provided using sensitivity analysis performed on an actual distribution feeder model of San Diego Gas & Electric Company. The results of this study show that the phase connectivity, even in the presence of high PV generation, can be accurately identified using statistical analysis of AMI data of 1 day.

Data-Enhanced Hierarchical Control to Improve Distribution Voltage with Extremely High PV Penetration

Dynamic, scalable, and interoperable control paradigms are required to enable efficient, secure, reliable, and resilient distribution grid operations with widespread grid integration of renewable energy resources. This paper presents our recent research on developing a novel, holistic, data-enhanced hierarchical control architecture that addresses the formidable challenges faced by emerging distribution grids with increasing penetrations of distributed energy resources. The proposed architecture integrates centralized monitoring and control with distributed grid-edge control and thus effectively deals with multi-spatiotemporal dynamics existing in the grid. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control architecture.
