Vacuum-ultraviolet light source for enhanced production of metastable krypton and xenon beams

Here, we demonstrate excitation of metastable krypton and xenon beams using a vacuum ultraviolet lamp and directly compare the performance of this method to metastable excitation based on a radio-frequency-driven plasma discharge. In our apparatus, lamp-based metastable excitation outperforms the plasma discharge across a wide range of beam flux values relevant for atom trap trace analysis (ATTA). Moreover, we do not observe significant degradation in lamp performance after over 160 h of operation. We find that lamp-based excitation is particularly advantageous at the smallest and largest beam fluxes tested, demonstrating the utility of this approach both for improving krypton ATTA and for enabling the detection of radioactive xenon isotopes using ATTA. Finally, we demonstrate an additional enhancement to lamp-based metastable excitation efficiency and stability by applying an external magnetic field.

Implementing an electronic sideband offset lock for isotope shift spectroscopy in radium

We demonstrate laser frequency stabilization with at least 6 GHz of offset tunability using an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator to generate electronic sidebands (ESB) on a titanium sapphire laser at 714 nm and we apply this technique to perform isotope shift spectroscopy of 226 Ra and 225 Ra. By locking the laser to a single resonance of a high finesse optical cavity and adjusting the lock offset, we determine the frequency difference between the magneto-optical trap (MOT) transitions in the two isotopes to be 2630.0 ± 0.3 MHz, a factor of 29 more precise than the previously available data. Using the known value of the hyperfine splitting of the 3 P 1 level, we calculate the isotope shift for the 1 S 0 to 3 P 1 transition to be 2267.0 ± 2.2 MHz, a factor of 8 more precise than the best available value. Our technique could be applied to countless other atomic systems to provide unprecedented precision in isotope shift spectroscopy and other relative frequency comparisons.

β -Nuclear-Recoil Correlation from $^6$$\mathrm{He}$ Decay in a Laser Trap

Here, we report the first precise measurement of a β-recoil correlation from a radioactive noble gas ( 6 He) confined via a magneto-optical trap. The measurement is motivated by the search for exotic tensor-type contributions to the charged weak current. Interpreted as tensor currents with right-handed neutrinos, the measurements yield |C T /C A | 2 ≤ 0.022 (90% confidence limit, C.L.). On the other hand, for left-handed neutrinos the limits are 0.007 < C T /C A < 0.111 (90% C.L.). The sensitivity of the present measurement is mainly limited by experimental uncertainties in determining the time response properties and the distance between the atom cloud and the microchannel plate used for recoil ion detection.

High-resolution spectroscopy of neutral Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix

Here, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the absorption and emission spectra of Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix at a resolution of 0.025 nm. Five absorption bands were identified as due to transitions from the 4 f 14 5 d 0 6 s 2 1 S 0 ground-state configuration to 4 f 14 5 d 0 6 s 6 p and 4 f 13 5 d 1 6 s 2 configurations. The two lowest-energy bands were assigned to outer-shell transitions to 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 and 1 P 1 atomic states and displayed the structure of a broad doublet and an asymmetric triplet, respectively. The remaining three higher-frequency bands were assigned to inner-shell transitions to distinct J = 1 states arising from the 4 f 13 5 d 1 6 s 2 configuration and were highly structured with narrow linewidths. A classical simulation was performed to identify the stability and symmetry of possible trapping sites in the Ne crystal. It showed that the overarching 1 + 2 structure of the high-frequency bands could be predominantly ascribed to crystal-field splitting in the axial field of a 10-atom vacancy of C 4 v symmetry. Their prominent substructures were shown to be manifestations of phonon sidebands associated with the zero-phonon lines on each crystal-field state. Unprecedented for a metal–rare-gas system, resolution of individual phonon states on an allowed electronic transition was possible under excitation spectroscopy which reflects the semiquantum nature of solid Ne. In contrast to the absorption spectra, emission spectra produced by steady-state excitation into the 1 P 1 absorption band consisted of simple, unstructured fluorescence bands.

Spectroscopic study and lifetime measurement of the 6d7p 3 F 2 o state of radium

We report a method for the precision measurement of the oscillator strengths and the branching fractions of the decay channels of the 6d7p 3 F 2 o state in 226 Ra. Here, this method exploits a set of metastable states present in Ra, allowing a measurement of the oscillator strengths that does not require knowledge of the number of atoms in the atomic beam. We measure the oscillator strengths and the branching fractions for decays from the 6d7p 3 F 2 o state to the 7s6d 3 D 1 , 7s6d 3 D 2 , and 7s6d 1 D 2 states and constrain the branching fraction to the 7s6d 3 D 3 state to be less than 0.4% (68% confidence limit). The lifetime of the 3 F 2 o state is determined to be 15 ± 4 ns.
