Workshop on Radiographic Imaging and Applications Research and Development Recommendations for Field Radiography

The Workshop on Radiographic Imaging and Applications (WORIA) brought together subject matter experts from industry, academia, US and UK government agencies, and the national laboratories to provide a forum to liaise and share information between technology developers in government and industry, end users, and mission stakeholder to produce an “expert consensus view” regarding future research directions toward a comprehensive radiography/penetrating imaging portfolio in the Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development Near Field Detection Portfolio. The inaugural WORIA was held at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on February 7–9, 2023. The inaugural WORIA meeting focused on field radiography applications, or situations in which a portable imaging system must be brought to an item of interest (rather than the item brought to an imaging facility). This report documents consensus views derived from the meeting and provides research and development recommendations for federal program managers.

Our teams design high-resolution MeV x-ray radiography systems for National security missions [Poster]

The NNSS has been at the forefront of custom high-fidelity x-ray/gamma radiographic imaging solutions that serve our national security for over five decades. Our radiography team utilizes expertise in physics modeling and analysis, along with optical, mechanical, and electrical design, in close collaboration with our customers, to develop imaging methods and capabilities that go beyond their needs. Conceptual designs are developed through R&D efforts to provide solutions for the specific problem at hand. Field systems are designed and built in-house, then qualified utilizing a range of facilities across the National Security Enterprise. Radiographic imaging systems are deployed by our team in the most challenging environments. The NNSS has a strong math and programming team that provides novel on-site image analysis methods that extract crucial information from data returned in field tests.

Assessment of the Imaging Properties of Plastic Scintillators at FP60R for Neutron Imaging Applications [Slides]

4mm thick Stilbene gives the brightest signal but at the cost of resolution. 1 and 2 cm BC412 gave the highest resolution images. The HI-LY scintillator is better suited for DD neutrons. Future work includes: measurements this summer using an event-mode imaging camera which promises sub-pixel resolution through center-of-mass techniques, opportunities for DD neutron tests during laser-driven z-pinch experiments at UNR, and assess scatter within scintillator.
