Matter power spectra in modified gravity: a comparative study of approximations and N -body simulations

ABSTRACT Testing gravity and the concordance model of cosmology, $\Lambda$CDM, at large scales is a key goal of this decade’s largest galaxy surveys. Here we present a comparative study of dark matter power spectrum predictions from different numerical codes in the context of three popular theories of gravity that induce scale-independent modifications to the linear growth of structure: nDGP, Cubic Galileon, and K-mouflage. In particular, we compare the predictions from N-body simulations solving the full scalar field equation, two N-body codes with approximate time integration schemes, a parametrized modified N-body implementation, and the analytic halo model reaction approach. We find the modification to the $\Lambda$CDM spectrum is in 2 per cent agreement at $z\le 1$ and $k\le 1~h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ over all gravitational models and codes, in accordance with many previous studies, indicating these modelling approaches are robust enough to be used in forthcoming survey analyses under appropriate scale cuts. We further make public the new code implementations presented, specifically the halo model reaction K-mouflage implementation and the relativistic Cubic Galileon implementation.

Prospects for fundamental physics with LISA

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA,we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising fundamental physics directions. We organize these directions through a “science-first” approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. Overall, the classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Getting Innovation Right in the Strategy for Long-Term Competition - Annotated Bibliography

Key questions: What is required to “out-innovate” major power adversaries?; What goals and metrics should guide innovation strategies?; Does the strategy for S&T innovation address adequately all of the military domains where the major powers compete?; Does the defense strategy ensure the needed innovation in strategic and operational concepts, organizations, and processes?; Are there useful lessons for innovation from past defense reform efforts?

Adapting Project Management Practices to Research-Based Projects

From dealing with the inherent uncertainties in outcomes of scientific research to the lack of applicability of current NASA Procedural Requirements guidance documentation, research-based projects present challenges that require unique application of classical project management techniques. If additionally challenged by the creation of a new program transitioning from basic to applied research in a technical environment often unfamiliar with the cost and schedule constraints addressed by project management practices, such projects can find themselves struggling throughout their life cycles. Finally, supplying deliverables to a prime vehicle customer, also in the formative stage, adds further complexity to the development and management of research-based projects. The Biomedical Research and Countermeasures Projects Branch at NASA Johnson Space Center encompasses several diverse applied research-based or research-enabling projects within the newly-formed Human Research Program. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the organizational structure and environment in which these projects operate and how the projects coordinate to address and manage technical requirements. We will identify several of the challenges (cost, technical, schedule, and personnel) encountered by projects across the Branch, present case reports of actions taken and techniques implemented to deal with these challenges, and then close the session with an open forum discussion of remaining challenges and potential mitigations.
