Development and test of a large-aperture Nb3Sn cos-theta dipole coil with stress management

The stress-managed cos-theta (SMCT) coil is a new concept which was proposed and is being developed at Fermilab in the framework of US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) for high-field and/or large-aperture accelerator magnets based on low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. A 120-mm aperture two-layer Nb3Sn SMCT dipole coil has been developed at Fermilab to demonstrate and test the SMCT concept including coil design, fabrication technology and performance. The first SMCT demo coil was fabricated and assembled with 60-mm aperture Nb3Sn coil inside a dipole mirror configuration and tested separately and in series with the insert coil. This paper summarizes the design, parameters, and quench performance of the 120-mm aperture SMCT coil in a dipole mirror configuration.

First Results of AUP $Nb_{3}Sn$ Quadrupole Horizontal Tests

The Large Hadron Collider will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its luminosity by a factor of ~10. A crucial part of this upgrade will be replacement of the NbTi final focus magnets with Nb3Sn magnets that achieve a ~50% increase in the field strength. This will be the first ever large-scale implementation of Nb3Sn magnets in a particle accelerator. This talk will present the program to fabricate these components and first results from horizontal tests of fully assembled cryo assemblies.

Status of MQXFB Quadrupole Magnets for HL-LHC

The MQXFB magnets are superconducting quadrupoles with nominal peak field on the conductor of 11.3 T. With their magnetic length of 7.2 m, they stand as the longest Nb3Sn accelerator magnets designed and manufactured up to now. Together with the companion MQXFA 4.2 m long units, built by the US Accelerator Research Program, they are at the heart of HL-LHC, as they shall replace the inner triplet quadrupoles at either side of the ATLAS and CMS interaction regions of the LHC. This technology has benefited from many years of development, and this specific design was validated with successful short models (MQXFS, 1.2 m long). More recently, several MQXFA magnets were shown to satisfy HL-LHC requirements. In this paper, we report on the cold test results of four MQXFB magnets, focusing on performance, training, behavior after thermal and powering cycles, and field quality. We then provide an update of the overall status, including ongoing verifications of design changes at the level of the coil fabrication.
