On the co-nucleation of adjoining twin pairs at grain boundaries in hexagonal close-packed materials

Here this work addresses the formation of adjoining twin pairs (ATPs) at grain boundaries (GBs) in hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals from the perspective of the co-nucleation (CN) of pairs of deformation twins. A continuum defect mechanics model is proposed to investigate the energetic feasibility of the CN of ATPs resulting from the dissociation of GB dislocations. Application of the model to a set of GBs in Mg reveals that CN is largely preferred over the nucleation of a single twin variant for low misorientation angle GBs, which is consistent with previous experimental analyses. The CN events are subsequently analyzed considering the GB character, and the twin system alignment ($m$') and Schmid factors to obtain better insights into the conditions governing the formation of ATPs via CN. The likelihood of CN even at low $m$' values reveals that CN events could be responsible for the formation of ATP pairs in these scenarios.

Disclination-dislocation based model for grain boundary stress field evolution due to slip transmission history and influence on subsequent dislocation transmission

This work demonstrates how the structure of a grain boundary (GB) and its evolution due to slip transmission history influences subsequent dislocation transmission. First, a model for the evolution of stress fields within grain boundaries that accounts for the effects of coherent dislocation transmission is introduced. Starting with a disclination-based construct of GBs at minimum energy (equilibrium), the model describes the evolution of the GB stress field to a state characteristic of excess energy (non-equilibrium) due to the incorporation of residual Burgers vector content following sequential slip transmission events. Several essential features of this model are verified via molecular dynamics simulations of lattice dislocation absorption. Second, this model is implemented into a discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) code and simulations are performed to understand the influence of Non-equilibrium GB stress fields, conditioned by the slip transmission history, on subsequent dislocation transmission. DDD simulations reveal that the critical resolved stress necessary for slip propagation can be reduced by with continued absorption of residual dislocation content. Moreover, DDD simulations prove that a comprehensive consideration of both the binding and driving stresses, and the evolution of the transmission configuration is necessary to quantify the influence of the mechanical state of the GB on slip propagation. In general, this work provides important insights into the role of GB structure evolution, conditioned by prior deformation history, on intergranular plasticity.

Data-driven analysis of neutron diffraction line profiles: application to plastically deformed Ta

Abstract Non-destructive evaluation of plastically deformed metals, particularly diffraction line profile analysis (DLPA), is valuable both to estimate dislocation densities and arrangements and to validate microstructure-aware constitutive models. To date, the interpretation of whole line diffraction profiles relies on the use of semi-analytical models such as the extended convolutional multiple whole profile (eCMWP) method. This study introduces and validates two data-driven DLPA models to extract dislocation densities from experimentally gathered whole line diffraction profiles. Using two distinct virtual diffraction models accounting for both strain and instrument induced broadening, a database of virtual diffraction whole line profiles of Ta single crystals is generated using discrete dislocation dynamics. The databases are mined to create Gaussian process regression-based surrogate models, allowing dislocation densities to be extracted from experimental profiles. The method is validated against 11 experimentally gathered whole line diffraction profiles from plastically deformed Ta polycrystals. The newly proposed model predicts dislocation densities consistent with estimates from eCMWP. Advantageously, this data driven LPA model can distinguish broadening originating from the instrument and from the dislocation content even at low dislocation densities. Finally, the data-driven model is used to explore the effect of heterogeneous dislocation densities in microstructures containing grains, which may lead to more accurate data-driven predictions of dislocation density in plastically deformed polycrystals.
