Theories derived from Haissinski equation and their applications to electron storage rings

As a stationary solution of the Vlasov–Fokker–Planck equation, the Haissinski equation predicts the equilibrium line density of a bunch that circulates in a storage ring for a given wake function. The research in this paper shows that some equations regarding the centroid shift of the bunch, the peak position of the bunch profile, bunch length, and the impedance from the bunch profile can be derived from the Haissinski equation in a self-consistent manner. Specifically, a generalized quadratic equation for potential-well bunch lengthening is derived to accommodate any arbitrary impedance model (that is, the impedance spectrum under consideration can take any form). This expands upon Zotter's cubic equation, which is primarily applicable to inductive impedance. The equations derived in this paper are tested using computed impedance models for some electron storage rings, showing machine-dependent properties of impedance effects. We conclude that these equations can be employed in electron storage rings to effectively bridge the gap between impedance computations and beam-based measurements.

Broadband impedance modeling and single bunch instabilities estimations of the advanced light source upgrade project

We report the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) is a 4th generation diffraction-limited soft x-ray radiation source, consisting of a new accumulator ring (AR) and a new storage ring (SR). In both rings coupling-impedance driven instabilities need careful evaluation to ensure meeting the machine’s high-performance goals. This paper presents the workflow followed in building the impedance models and the beam-stability analysis based on those models. We follow the commonly accepted approach of separating the resistive-wall and the geometric parts of the impedance; the former is obtained by analytical formulas, the latter by numerical electro-magnetic codes (primarily CST Studio software) with perfectly-conducting boundary conditions. Impedance budgets are established and pseudo-Green functions calculated to be used in beam dynamics studies. We also present various ways to cross-check simulation results for reliable impedance modeling. Finally, the crucial single-bunch instability current thresholds for various operation modes are determined and discussed.

Multibunch Studies for LCLS-II High Energy Upgrade

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray free-electron laser at SLAC is being upgraded to LCLS-II with a superconducting linac and 1 MHz bunch repetition rate. The proposed high-energy upgrade (LCLS-II-HE) will increase the beam energy from 4 to 8 GeV, extending the reach of accessible X-ray photon energies. With the increased repetition rate and longer linac of LCLS-II-HE, multi-bunch effects are of greater concern. We use recently introduced capabilities in the beam transport code ELEGANT to study dipole and monopole beam breakup effects for LCLS-II HE beam parameters. The results indicate that resonant dipole kicks have steady-state settle times on the order of 500 bunches or less and appear manageable. We also consider a statistical variation of the cavity frequencies and transverse offsets of cavities and quadrupoles. Resonant emittance growth driven by monopole kicks is found to be disrupted by frequency variation between cavities.
