A Cross-correlation Study of High-energy Neutrinos and Tracers of Large-scale Structure

The origin of the bulk of the astrophysical neutrinos detected by the IceCube Observatory remains a mystery. Previous source-finding analyses compared the directions of IceCube events and individual sources in astrophysical catalogs. The source association method is technically challenging when the number of source candidates is much larger than the number of the observed astrophysical neutrinos. In this paper, we show that in this large source number regime, a two-point cross-correlation analysis of neutrino data and source catalog can instead be used to constrain potential source populations for the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, and provide spatial evidence for the existence of astrophysical neutrinos. We present an analysis of the cross-correlation of the IceCube 2010–2012 point-source data and a WISE–2MASS galaxy sample. While we find no significant detection of cross-correlation with the publicly available neutrino data set, we show that, when applied to the full IceCube data, which has a longer observation time and higher astrophysical neutrino purity, our method has sufficient statistical power to detect a cross-correlation signal if the neutrino sources trace the large-scale structure of the universe.

Fisher for complements: extracting cosmology and neutrino mass from the counts-in-cells PDF

In this work, we comprehensively analyse the cosmology dependence of counts-in-cells statistics. Furthermore, we focus on the shape of the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the matter density field at mildly non-linear scales. Based on large-deviation statistics, we parametrize the cosmology dependence of the matter PDF in terms of the linear power spectrum, the growth factor, the spherical collapse dynamics, and the non-linear variance. We extend our formalism to include massive neutrinos, finding that the total matter PDF is highly sensitive to the total neutrino mass Mν and can disentangle it from the clustering amplitude σ 8 . Additionally, using more than a million PDFs extracted from the Quijote simulations, we determine the response of the matter PDF to changing parameters in the νΛCDM model and successfully cross-validate the theoretical model and the simulation measurements. We present the first νΛCDM Fisher forecast for the matter PDF at multiple scales and redshifts, and its combination with the matter power spectrum. We establish that the matter PDF and the matter power spectrum are highly complementary at mildly non-linear scales. The matter PDF is particularly powerful for constraining the matter density Ωm, clustering amplitude σ 8 and the total neutrino mass Mν. Adding the mildly non-linear matter PDF to the mildly non-linear matter power spectrum improves constraints on Ω m by a factor of 5 and σ 8 by a factor of 2 when considering the three lowest redshifts. In our joint analysis of the matter PDF and matter power spectrum at three redshifts, the total neutrino mass is constrained to better than 0.01 eV with a total volume of 6 (Gpc h -1 ) 3 . We discuss how density-split statistics can be used to translate those encouraging results for the matter PDF into realistic observables in galaxy surveys.

Signatures of self-interacting dark matter on cluster density profile and subhalo distributions

Non-gravitational interactions between dark matter particles with strong scattering, but relatively small annihilation and dissipation, has been proposed to match various observables on cluster and group scales. In this paper, we present the results from large cosmological simulations which include the effects of different self-interaction scenarios. In particular we explore a model with the differential cross section that can depend on both the relative velocity of the interacting particles and the angle of scattering. We focus on how quantities, such as the stacked density profiles, subhalo counts and the splashback radius change as a function of different forms of self-interaction. We find that self-interactions not only affect the central region of the cluster, the effect well known from previous studies, but also significantly alter the distribution of subhalos and the density of particles out to the splashback radius. Therefore, our results suggest that current weak lensing data can already put constraints on the self-interaction cross-section that are only slightly weaker than the Bullet Cluster constraints (σ/m ≲ 2 cm 2 /g), and future lensing surveys should be able to tighten them even further making halo profiles on cluster scales a competitive probe for DM physics.

Investigating the use of field solvers for simulating classical systems

We explore the use of field solvers as approximations of classical Vlasov-Poisson systems. This correspondence is investigated in both electrostatic and gravitational contexts. We demonstrate the ability of field solvers to be excellent approximations of problems with cold initial condition into the nonlinear regime. We also investigate extensions of the Schrödinger-Poisson system that employ multiple stacked cold streams, and the von Neumann–Poisson equation as methods that can successfully reproduce the classical evolution of warm initial conditions. We then discuss how appropriate simulation parameters need to be chosen to avoid interference terms, aliasing, and wave behavior in the field solver solutions. Finally, we present a series of criteria clarifying how parameters need to be chosen in order to effectively approximate classical solutions.
