Fixed lines in four fermion models in two dimensions

Motivated by conjectures about near-horizon dynamics in quantum gravity, we search for lines of perturbatively accessible fixed points emanating from models of N free fermions. Through two loops we find a new class of models, apart from the well-known Abelian Thirring models. Further study is needed to see whether these can lead to true conformal manifolds, or perhaps a new class of large- N fixed points. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Breakdown of field theory in near-horizon regions

Abstract We discuss back-reaction in the semiclassical treatment of quantum fields near a black hole. When the state deviates significantly from Hartle-Hawking, simple energetic considerations of back-reaction give rise to a characteristic radial distance scale ∼$$ {\left({r}_s^2{G}_N\right)}^{1/D} $$ r s 2 G N 1 / D , below which some breakdown of effective field theory may occur.

Quantum theory of three-dimensional de Sitter space

We sketch the construction of a quantum model of three-dimensional de Sitter space, based on the covariant entropy principle and the observation that semiclassical physics suggests the possibility of a consistent theory of a finite number of unstable massive particles with purely gravitational interactions. Our model is holographic, finite, unitary, causal, plausibly exhibits fast scrambling, and qualitatively reproduces features of semiclassical de Sitter physics. In an appendix we outline some calculations that might lead to further tests of the model. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Emergence of quantum-field theory in causal diamonds

The experimental successes of quantum-field theory do not justify using it to describe even a finite fraction of the entanglement entropy of a causal diamond with its exterior, in the limit of large diamonds. Susskind and Uglum and Jacobson conjectured that this divergent entropy could be thought of as a renormalization of Newton’s constant in the Bekenstein–Hawking formula, if we applied that formula to arbitrary causal diamonds. Jacobson showed that this leads to a derivation of the null projection of Einstein’s equations as the hydrodynamic equations of the area law for arbitrary diamonds, a derivation which has the added virtue of demonstrating that the cosmological constant is not an energy density. Using a gauge choice adapted to causal diamond boundaries, we revisit arguments of Carlip and Solodukhin that the proper theory of near horizon states is a (cut-off) (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theory, with central charge proportional to the transverse area. This leads to a universal formula for fluctuations of the modular Hamiltonian of a diamond, which we argue is compatible with the explanation of the temperature of de Sitter space in terms of an identification between localized energy and the number of constrained q-bits of the holographic degrees of freedom.

Comments on the entanglement spectrum of de Sitter space

We argue that the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole entropy formula does not imply that the entanglement spectrum of the vacuum density matrix of de Sitter space is flat. Specifically, we show that the expectation value of a random projection operator of dimension d >> 1, on a Hilbert space of dimension D >> d and in a density matrix ρ = e –K with strictly positive spectrum, is $\frac{d}{D} \large{(}1 + o \large{(}\frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\large{)}$, independent of the spectrum of the density matrix. In addition, for a suitable class of spectra the asymptotic estimates Tr (ρK) ~ ln D – o(1) and Tr [ρ(K – $\langle$K$\rangle$) 2 ] = a $\langle$K$\rangle$ are compatible for any order one constant a. We discuss a simple family of matrix models and projections that can replicate such modular Hamiltonians and the SdS entropy formula.

Discretely Charged Dark Matter in Inflation Models Based on Holographic Space-Time

The holographic space-time (HST) model of inflation has a potential explanation for dark matter as tiny primordial black holes. Motivated by a recent paper of Barrau, we propose a version of this model where some of the inflationary black holes (IBHs), whose decay gives rise to the Hot Big Bang, carry the smallest value of a discrete symmetry charge. The fraction f of IBHs carrying this charge is difficult to estimate from first principles, but we determine it by requiring that the crossover between radiation and matter domination occurs at the correct temperature T eq ~ 1eV=10 –28 M P . The fraction is small, f ~ 2×10 –9 , so we believe this gives an extremely plausible model of dark matter.
