In Situ Local Imaging of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in RbEuFe 4 As 4

The coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism is an intrinsically interesting research focus in condensed matter physics but the study is limited by low superconducting (T c ) and magnetic (T m ) transition temperatures in related materials. Here, we used a scanning superconducting quantum interference device to image the in-situ diamagnetic and ferromagnetic responses of RbEuFe 4 As 4 with high T c and T m . We observed significant suppression of superfluid density in vicinity of the magnetic phase transition, signifying fluctuation-enhanced magnetic scatterings between Eu spins and Fe 3d conduction electrons. Intriguingly, we observed multiple ferromagnetic domains which should be absent in an ideal magnetic helical phase. The formation of these domains demonstrates a weak c-axis ferromagnetic component probably arising from Eu spin-canting effect, indicative of possible superconductivity-driven domain Meissner and domain vortex-antivortex phases as revealed in EuFe 2 (As 0.79 P 0.21 ) 2 . Finally, our observations highlight RbEuFe 4 As 4 is a unique system which includes multiple interplay channels between superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Spin and charge density waves in quasi-one-dimensional KMn 6 Bi 5

The recent observation that pressure could suppress antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in quasi-one-dimensional AMn 6 Bi 5 Mn-cluster chain materials (A=Na, K, Rb, and Cs) and lead to a superconducting dome offers an alternative Mn-based class of materials with which to study unconventional superconductivity. Using neutron diffraction, we elucidate the exact nature of the previously unknown AFM ground state of KMn 6 Bi 5 and report finding transverse incommensurate spin density waves (SDWs) for the Mn atoms with a propagating direction along the chains. The SDWs have distinct refined amplitudes of ~2.46μ B for the Mn atoms in the pentagons and ~0.29μ B with a large standard deviation for Mn atoms at the center between the pentagons. AFM coupling dominates both the nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn interactions within the pentagon and next-nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn interactions out of the pentagon (along the propagating wave). The SDWs exhibit both local and itinerant characteristics potentially due to cooperative interactions between local magnetic exchange and conduction electrons. Single crystal x-ray diffraction below the AFM transition revealed satellite peaks originating from charge density waves along the chain direction with a q vector twice as large as that of the SDW, pointing to a strong real space coupling between them. Additionally, we report a significant magnetoelastic effect during the AFM transition, especially along the chain direction, observed in temperature-dependent x-ray powder diffraction. Our work not only reveals fascinating intertwined spin, charge, and lattice orders in one-dimensional KMn 6 Bi 5 , but also provides an essential piece of information on its magnetic structure to understand the mechanism of superconductivity in this Mn-based family.

Superconductivity in Y 4 RuGe 8 with a Vacancy-Ordered CeNiSi 2 -Type Superstructure

In this work, we report a new compound, Y 4 RuGe 8 , with a transition metal vacancy-ordered CeNiSi 2 -type superstructure, which has a superconducting transition at 1.3 K. Y 4 RuGe 8 crystals were grown by indium flux at relatively low temperatures (below 1273 K), which makes it possible to stabilize such a vacancy-ordered phase. The crystal structure of Y 4 RuGe 8 was solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The as-grown Y 4 RuGe 8 crystals are always twinned, crystallizing in the space group $P\bar{1}$(no. 2) with the lattice parameters a = 5.7680(1) Å, b = 8.2042(2) Å, c = 11.5093(3) Å, α = 79.696(1)degrees, β = 88.491(1)degrees, and γ = 79.637(2)degrees; this structure is a superstructure deriving from the higher symmetry CeNiSi 2 -type structure (Cmcm, no. 63) due to the ordering of Ru vacancies. The ordering of Ru sites breaks slightly distorted Ge planes in the CeNiSi 2 prototype into infinite cis-trans Ge chains in Y 4 RuGe 8 . The presence of bulk superconductivity in Y 4 RuGe 8 is well supported by zero resistance and a jump in specific heat at the critical transition temperature. The Sommerfeld coefficient (19 mJ K -2 mol -1 ) of the specific heat is greater than that (11 mJ K -2 mol -1 ) estimated using the bare density of states (4.7 states/eV/f.u.) from first-principles calculations. The ab initio calculations indicate that 4d electrons of both Y and Ru and 4p electrons of Ge are the main contributors to the total density of states at the Fermi level in Y 4 RuGe 8 .

A Noncentrosymmetric Polymorph of LuRuGe

In this work, we report a new polymorph of LuRuGe, obtained in indium flux. This phase exhibits the noncentrosymmetric ZrNiAl-type structure with the space group $Ρ\bar 62m$ as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This polymorph can convert into another centrosymmetric polymorph (TiNiSi-type structure, space group Pnma ) at high temperatures. In this work, we performed electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements on this new phase. It shows metallic behavior with a Hall sign change from negative at 2 K to positive at 125 K. LuRuGe exhibits Pauli paramagnetism as the ground state with no local magnetic moments from either the Ru or Lu site. The Debye temperature Θ = 348 K and electronic coefficient γ e = 3.6 mJ K –2 mol –1 are extracted from the low-temperature specific heat data in LuRuGe. We also carried out first-principles density functional theory calculations to map out the electronic band structure and density of states. There are several electronic bands crossing the Fermi level, supporting a multiband scenario consistent with the Hall sign change. The density of states around the Fermi level is mainly from Ru 4d and Ge 4p electrons, indicating a strong hybridization between those atomic orbitals.

Lithium thiostannate spinels: air-stable cubic semiconductors.

Lithium chalcogenide materials have been studied less than other alkali metal analogs and are of interest as ion conductors and semiconductors capable of thermal neutron detection. Herein, we describe the structural, thermal, magnetic, electronic, and ionic properties of a new family of cubic lithium thiospinels Li2MSn3S8 (M = Mg, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co) and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8. All compounds crystallize in the Fd (3) over barm space group and exhibit site occupancy disorder with Sn and M on the octahedral site for M = Mg, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co. The Li1.66CuSn3.33S8 compound also exhibits occupancy disorder on the tetrahedral sites between Li and Cu, as well as on the octahedral sites between Li and Sn. We demonstrate the ability to tune the physical properties of the compounds by changing their composition. By tuning the identity of the transition metal in the structure, the optical band gaps can vary between 0.91(2) and 2.19(2) eV, and electrical resistivities between 2.8 x 10(3) Omega-cm and 2.2 x 10(7)Omega-cm can be achieved. Density functional theory calculations for Li2MgSn3S8 and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8 suggest that both materials have indirect band gaps and significantly dispersive conduction bands. A bandwidth dispersion of 0.75 and 0.70 eV along the Gamma -> M direction in the conduction band are predicted for Li2MgSn3S8 and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8, respectively, with an electron effective mass of 0.49 and 0.55 m(e) at the Gamma point. The hole effective mass in the valence band is calculated to be 1.25 me at the M point and 0.75 me at the L point for Li2MgSn3S8 and Li1.66CuSn3.33S8, respectively. The ionic/electronic conductivity of each compound was determined using AC electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Quasi-Two-Dimensional Heterostructures (K M 1 – x Te)(LaTe 3 ) ( M = Mn and Zn) with Charge Density Waves

Layered heterostructure materials with two different functional building blocks can teach us about emergent physical properties and phenomena arising from interactions between the layers. Here, we report intergrowth compounds KLaM 1 - x Te 4 (M = Mn and Zn; $x \approx$ 0.35) featuring two chemically distinct alternating layers [LaTe 3 ] and [KM 1 - x Te]. Their crystal structures are incommensurate, determined by single X-ray diffraction for the Mn compound and a transmission electron microscope study for the Zn compound. KLaMn 1 – x Te 4 crystallizes in the orthorhombic superspace group Pmnm(01/2 gamma)s00 with lattice parameters a = 4.4815(3) Å, b = 21.6649(16) Å, and c = 4.5220(3) Å. It exhibits charge density wave order at room temperature with a modulation wave vector q = 1/2b* + 0.3478c* originating from electronic instability of Te-square nets in [LaTe 3 ] layers. The Mn analog exhibits a cluster spin glass behavior with spin freezing temperature $T_f \approx$ 5 K attributed to disordered Mn vacancies and competing magnetic interactions in the [Mn 1 - x Te] layers. The Zn analog also has charge density wave order at room temperature with a similar q-vector having the c* component similar to 0.346 confirmed by selected-area electron diffraction. Electron transfer from [KM 1 - x Te] to [LaTe 3 ] layers exists in KLaM 1 – x Te 4 , leading to an enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient. The resistivities of KLaM 1 - x Te 4 (M = Mn and Zn) exhibit metallic behavior at high temperatures and an upturn at low temperatures, suggesting partial localization of carriers in the [LaTe 3 ] layers with some degree of disorder associated with the M atom vacancies in the [M 1 - x Te] layers.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in the Wide-Band-Gap Semiconductor Cu 2 Br 2 Se 6 with a Robust Framework

We report pressure-induced superconductivity in a ternary and nonmagnetic Cu-containing semiconductor, Cu 2 Br 2 Se 6 , with a wide band gap of 1.89 eV, in which the Cu and Br atoms generate infinite 2, helical chains along the c-axis and are linked by the cyclohexane-like Se 6 rings to form a three-dimensional framework. We find that this framework is remarkably robust under compression, and the ambient-pressure phase survives at least to our experimental limit of 32.1 GPa. Concurrent semiconductor-to-metal transition and superconductivity are observed above 21.0 GPa. The superconducting temperature monotonically increases from 4.0 to 6.7 K at 40.0 GPa. Furthermore, first-principles calculations show that the emergence of superconductivity is associated with the formation of weak multicentered bonds that involve the increase in coordination of the Cu atoms and a subset of the Se atoms. The observation of superconductivity in this type of nonmagnetic transition-metal-based material will inspire the exploration of related new superconductors under pressure.
