Signal processing applications of massively parallel charge domain computing devices

The present invention is embodied in a charge coupled device (CCD)/charge injection device (CID) architecture capable of performing a Fourier transform by simultaneous matrix vector multiplication (MVM) operations in respective plural CCD/CID arrays in parallel in O(1) steps. For example, in one embodiment, a first CCD/CID array stores charge packets representing a first matrix operator based upon permutations of a Hartley transform and computes the Fourier transform of an incoming vector. A second CCD/CID array stores charge packets representing a second matrix operator based upon different permutations of a Hartley transform and computes the Fourier transform of an incoming vector. The incoming vector is applied to the inputs of the two CCD/CID arrays simultaneously, and the real and imaginary parts of the Fourier transform are produced simultaneously in the time required to perform a single MVM operation in a CCD/CID array.

Neural Network Training by Integration of Adjoint Systems of Equations Forward in Time

A method and apparatus for supervised neural learning of time dependent trajectories exploits the concepts of adjoint operators to enable computation of the gradient of an objective functional with respect to the various parameters of the network architecture in a highly efficient manner. Specifically. it combines the advantage of dramatic reductions in computational complexity inherent in adjoint methods with the ability to solve two adjoint systems of equations together forward in time. Not only is a large amount of computation and storage saved. but the handling of real-time applications becomes also possible. The invention has been applied it to two examples of representative complexity which have recently been analyzed in the open literature and demonstrated that a circular trajectory can be learned in approximately 200 iterations compared to the 12000 reported in the literature. A figure eight trajectory was achieved in under 500 iterations compared to 20000 previously required. Tbc trajectories computed using our new method are much closer to the target trajectories than was reported in previous studies.

High precision computing with charge domain devices and a pseudo-spectral method therefor

The present invention enhances the bit resolution of a CCD/CID MVM processor by storing each bit of each matrix element as a separate CCD charge packet. The bits of each input vector are separately multiplied by each bit of each matrix element in massive parallelism and the resulting products are combined appropriately to synthesize the correct product. In another aspect of the invention, such arrays are employed in a pseudo-spectral method of the invention, in which partial differential equations are solved by expressing each derivative analytically as matrices, and the state function is updated at each computation cycle by multiplying it by the matrices. The matrices are treated as synaptic arrays of a neural network and the state function vector elements are treated as neurons. In a further aspect of the invention, moving target detection is performed by driving the soliton equation with a vector of detector outputs. The neural architecture consists of two synaptic arrays corresponding to the two differential terms of the soliton-equation and an adder connected to the output thereof and to the output of the detector array to drive the soliton equation.

Unipolar Terminal-Attractor Based Neural Associative Memory with Adaptive Threshold

A unipolar terminal-attractor based neural associative memory (TABAM) system with adaptive threshold for perfect convergence is presented. By adaptively setting the threshold values for the dynamic iteration for the unipolar binary neuron states with terminal-attractors for the purpose of reducing the spurious states in a Hopfield neural network for associative memory and using the inner-product approach, perfect convergence and correct retrieval is achieved. Simulation is completed with a small number of stored states (M) and a small number of neurons (N) but a large M/N ratio. An experiment with optical exclusive-OR logic operation using LCTV SLMs shows the feasibility of optoelectronic implementation of the models. A complete inner-product TABAM is implemented using a PC for calculation of adaptive threshold values to achieve a unipolar TABAM (UIT) in the case where there is no crosstalk, and a crosstalk model (CRIT) in the case where crosstalk corrupts the desired state.

Neural algorithm for simulation of class of nonlinear wave phenomena devised. Numerically solves special one-dimensional case of Korteweg-deVries equation. Intended to be executed rapidly by neural network implemented as charge-coupled-device/charge-injection device, very-large-scale integrated-circuit analog data processor of type described in "CCD/CID Processors Would Offer Greater Precision" (NPO-18972).

CCD/CID Processors Would Offer Greater Precision

Charge-coupled-device/charge-injection-device (CCD/CID) data processors of proposed type offer advantages of massively parallel computational architecture and high computational speed typical of older CCD/CID data processors, but with increased precision. Useful in performing matrix vector multiplications in variety of applications, including solving partial differential equations, processing signal and image data, control computations, and neural-network simulations. Greater precision of proposed devices help to ensure accuracy in CCD/CID implementations of pseudospectral neural networks - particular class of artificial neural networks especially suited to solving nonlinear differential equations.

(abstract) Application of Neural Networks to Hyperspectral Unmixing

The emergence, in recent years, of hyperspectral sensors provides a tremendous opportunity for advancing the process of detailed and direct remote detection and identification from space of targets or surface materials. Such sensors exploit the uniqueness of the corresponding spectral reflectance signatures, which enables high resolution imaging spectrometer data to be processed on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This has implications both for defense-related applications (e.g., surveillance tasks) and in the civilian domain (e.g., for science applications). The purpose of this talk is to discuss a number of strong arguments that support neural networks as a choice for the generalized analysis (e.g., unmixing) of remotely sensed hyperspectral data.

Adjoint-Operator Learning For A Neural Network

Electronic neural networks made to synthesize initially unknown mathematical models of time-dependent phenomena or to learn temporally evolving patterns by use of algorithms based on adjoint operators. Algorithms less complicated, involve less computation and solve learning equations forward in time possibly simultaneously with equations of evolution of neural network, thereby both increasing computational efficiency and making real-time applications possible.

Massively parallel neurocomputing for aerospace applications

An innovative hybrid, analog-digital charge-domain technology, for the massively parallel VLSI implementation of certain large scale matrix-vector operations, has recently been introduced. It employs arrays of Charge Coupled/Charge Injection Device cells holding an analog matrix of charge, which process digital vectors in parallel by means of binary, non-destructive charge transfer operations. The impact of this technology on massively parallel processing is discussed. Fundamentally new classes of algorithms, specifically designed for this emerging technology, as applied to signal processing, are derived.

Accelerating Learning By Neural Networks

Electronic neural networks made to learn faster by use of terminal teacher forcing. Method of supervised learning involves addition of teacher forcing functions to excitations fed as inputs to output neurons. Initially, teacher forcing functions are strong enough to force outputs to desired values; subsequently, these functions decay with time. When learning successfully completed, terminal teacher forcing vanishes, and dynamics or neural network become equivalent to those of conventional neural network. Simulated neural network with terminal teacher forcing learned to produce close approximation of circular trajectory in 400 iterations.
