100-lbf LO2/CH4 RCS Thruster Testing and Validation

100 pound thrust liquid Oxygen-Methane thruster sized for RCS (Reaction Control System) applications. Innovative Design Characteristics include: a) Simple compact design with minimal part count; b) Gaseous or Liquid propellant operation; c) Affordable and Reusable; d) Greater flexibility than existing systems; e) Part of NASA'S study of "Green Propellants." Hot-fire testing validated performance and functionality of thruster. Thruster's dependence on mixture ratio has been evaluated. Data has been used to calculate performance parameters such as thrust and Isp. Data has been compared with previous test results to verify reliability and repeatability. Thruster was found to have an Isp of 131 s and 82 lbf thrust at a mixture ratio of 1.62.

Lunar regolith penetrators and cutters

An apparatus was designed and built for conducting simulation experiments on cutting tool penetration in the centrifuge. This equipment is mounted on the laminar container which is used for the regolith densification study, so that the end product of the latter, i.e., a regolith bed with the proper density profile, can be used directly for the penetration tests. In this apparatus, an etching tool is suspended through a pulley system by the action of a double acting air cylinder. By adjusting the air pressure acting on each side of the cylinder, the net downward force acting on the tool can be controlled. The penetration of the tool is measured by an LVDT. This apparatus was proof-tested in the centrifuge and is ready for use in conjunction with the regolith densification experiments.

NASA and the challenge of ISDN: The role of satellites in an ISDN world

To understand what role satellites may play in Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), it is necessary to understand the concept of ISDN, including key organizations involved, the current status of key standards recommendations, and domestic and international progress implementation of ISDN. Each of these areas are explained. A summary of the technical performance criteria for ISDN, current standards for satellites in ISDN, key players in the ISDN environment, and what steps can be taken to encourage application of satellites in ISDN are also covered.
