The orbit and companion of the Cepheid S Sge - A probable triple system

New radial velocities for the classical Cepheid S Sge have been obtained and combined with previous observations to derive a new orbit. The revised orbital elements are: gamma, -10.3 +/- 0.4 km/s; K, 15.5 +/- 0.2 km/s; e, 0.23 +/- 0.02; omega, 203.1 +/- 4.2 deg; T0, 39902.3 +/- 6.6 JD; P, 675.79 +/- 0.18 days; f(m), 0.239 +/- 0.010 solar masses; a sin i, 0.935 AU = 139.9 +/- 2.0 x 10 exp 6 km; s.e., 1.2 km/s. The revised elements differ very little from the orbit determined by Herbig and Moore (1952). We have also obtained low resolution IUE spectra to search for the companion. The IUE spectra show excess flux at 1800 A when compared with spectra of the single Cepheid Delta Cep at the same (B-V)0. The spectral type of the companion determined from this flux excess is A7 V to F0 V. However, the mass of such a companion (1.7 to 1.5 solar masses) is smaller than the minimum mass (2.8 solar masses) required by the mass function and an evolutionary mass of the Cepheid. We infer that the companion is itself a short period binary.

Ultraviolet continuum variability and visual flickering in the peculiar object MWC 560

High-speed U-band photometry of the peculiar emission object MWC 560 obtained with the ground-based instrumentation, and V-band photometry obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer-Fine Error Sensor indicates irregular brightness variations are quasi-periodic. Multiple peaks of relative brightness power indicate statistically significant quasi periods existing in a range of 3-35 minutes, that are superposed on slower hourly varying components. We present a preliminary model that explains the minute and hourly time-scale variations in MWC 560 in terms of a velocity-shear instability that arises because a white dwarf magnetosphere impinges on an accretion disk. We also find evidence for Fe II multiplet pseudocontinuum absorption opacity in far-UV spectra of CH Cygni which is also present in MWC 560. Both CH Cyg and MWC 560 may be in an evolutionary stage that is characterized by strong UV continuum opacity which changes significantly during outburst, occurring before they permanently enter the symbiotic nebular emission phase.

Orbital and photometric properties of SZ Lyncis

New photometric results based on 3760 observations made on the Johnson BVRI system and 69 new radial-velocity measurements of the large-amplitude Delta Scuti binary SZ Lyncis are reported. Using these data and previous observations from the literature, improved values for the pulsation and orbital parameters are derived. The pulsation period is found to be 0.12052115 days, which is shorter than earlier determinations. The pulsation period is undergoing a secular period change of 3 X 10 to the -12th days/cycle. The orbital period of the binary is found to be 1181.1 days, with an orbital eccentricity of 0.188. A new ephemeris is given, which accurately predicts the times of light maximum and is consistent with the spectroscopic orbit. The mass function is 0.101 solar, which, together with other known properties of SZ Lyn, indicates that the unseen companion is most likely on the main sequence with a spectral type between F2 and K3.
