The RF-Transpond code couples a fluid plasma transport solver with a frequency domain cold plasma RF wave solver in a 1D domain parallel to a strong background magnetic field. A ponderomotive force term proportional to parallel gradients in the electric field strength is included in the transport model in order to describe ponderomotive effects in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of fusion plasmas. The transport and wave codes are verified independently and a coupled case corresponding to experimental parameters from the LArge Plasma Device (LAPD) is presented. The density perturbation ratio R n , calculated to describe ponderomotive force driven modifications, is up to 20% for the simulation inputs used.

Frequency-domain full-wave solutions to the cold-plasma problem have become ubiquitous in the study of radio frequency power in fusion plasmas. However, recent efforts at extreme levels of geometric fidelity have revealed fundamental limits in the problem size that can be solved by typical sparse direct solver based methods. These limits are of particular importance in the 3D study of RF launchers, where the number of degrees of freedom required can exceed 100 million. In such cases, it would be advantageous to solve the system via iterative means, but due to the large null space of the curl-curl operator, the convergence properties of algorithms like GMRES are poor. Here we present a physics-based preconditioner in the form of a WKB solution and demonstrate the iterative solution to the frequency-domain Helmholtz problem in 1D for several cases ranging from satisfying the WKB approximation to strongly violating it.
The plasma density profile close to RF actuators plays a vital role in the efficiency of power coupling from the antenna to the core plasma of fusion devices. Nonlinear interactions can be significant when considering the interaction of applied RF power and the tenuous SOL plasma, and the inclusion of this region in computational analysis is essential to providing robust predictive simulations of plasma response to RF application. Of particular interest is the observed density modification during RF operation. Here we present a self consistent description of the nonlinear ponderomotive force in the antenna near field region, via coupling a 1D field aligned transport model with a 1D cold plasma wave model. Results are presented, which show a parallel electric field of 300 Vm -1 drove a density reduction of ~ 20% over 25 RF periods.
